22.01.2022 When NOT to Ride!! Fiona is happy for us to share the alarming experience she had at the weekend. Because on looking back, she realises the horse was actually... giving her all the signs of not being right and how fortunate she was that she escaped a serious accident. Many of our recent posts have described what can go wrong when horses change homes: scroll down the posts - "Beware when Buying or Selling" These stories are in no way a reflection on previous owners of the horse they merely illustrate what can go wrong and why and the purpose of sharing is to make sure other people dont make the same mistake. Getting on a Grass-Affected Horse is the equivalent of getting into a vehicle that is being driven by someone on P! (Methamphetamine) These are definitely not training issues and we have assured Fiona that once we adjust the diet to a more suitable one the horse she bought will be back again! Fiona contacted us because her horse had become dangerous since she purchased it and moved it to her kikuyu pasture which you can see from the photos is very lush and prolific! From Fiona: Good morning Jenny Thank you for the speedy reply. Shes 15.2hh and chunky lol She had been getting 2 big handfuls of FibrePro and about a cup full of Cool Feed. So not much! No salt, but she has a salt lick, not sure that she licks it tho? Now that I think about it her behaviour has deteriorated since she arrived. She is spooky (looking around all the time, rushing to get her feed, not relaxed) Its been very wet up here so yesterday was my first ride in 2 weeks. Shes on a very grassy paddock, albeit Kikuyu, which we were told was great for horses as its low in sugar? (Another case where these issues have nothing to do with sugar content of the grass and everything to do with mineral balances) I brought her in, took her rug off and brushed her, all was quiet and ok. She began fussing when I was getting on, not standing still etc. (This is the point where you decide NOT to Ride.) We were going to wander over to the house then go next door where there is a large grassy space. She was spooky, head tossing and going sideways from the get go. We got thru the gateway which is a bit rumpty, and she just started to panic! There is blackberry there and I thought it may have scraped her legs? Anyway she was just spinning around in circles and then ended up flying down the hill backwards until she came up against a large tree stump and I managed to stop her and get off! Having had a bad rotational fall and subsequent surgeries on my neck I had no desire to try and work through it. (Fiona was fortunate to be presented with an opportunity to get off!) This was not the quiet horse I thought Id bought!!! Although I dont believe she meant it, she looked terrified! (It IS frightening for the horse to be so lost as well as the rider) Anyway, I took her back and lunged her, she was fast but not crazy so I hopped back on and managed to walk reasonably quietly back up to the house and back, although she didnt like going down-hill, she snaked and ended up going down sideways? She also kept trying to pull the reins out of my hands too, like a forward head flick. (No need to put yourself at risk a second time, in these cases it is best NOT to hop back on, the horse is not processing information when in this state of mind and therefore certainly not winning, In our experience they dont remember these episodes which are based on reactions not responses there is a big difference) She has a swishy tail too so may need some chiro work? (No need for chiro as this too will resolve with the diet changes) None of this behaviour (except perhaps swishy tail) showed when I tried her out (twice). Another thing - she used to self-load, I saw a video, but now takes ages to load with lots of head throwing, like shes trying to hit her head on the roof, but my float is too high to do that, stands with front feet on ramp for ages (hours!) then all of a sudden she rushes on, same with coming off, lots of waiting them boom she comes flying off?? (This will all resolve too once the horse can think straight again) Ive attached a couple of photos of her and where shes grazing... the first pic is me riding her before I bought her. She was lovely and quiet and I felt safe. Fiona is in the process of gradually changing her diet: She is now off the lush kikuyu grass you can see in the second picture and on plain grass hay. The fibre-pro Lucerne has been replaced with oaten chaff and beet, keeping the handful of coolade for taste. SOS & GrazeEzy to bring her metabolism back to normal. GrazeEzy will help her cope with some grass when she is ready. Salt plus Premium NZ Horse Minerals her multi mineral to keep her healthy going forward.

16.01.2022 Ann was having issues with both her horses.. Approximately 2 months ago I purchased a new horse Darcy, a 14.2hh Australian Riding Pony, untried as he ...was on the mainland (Australia) and travel was restricted (for humans anyway ). He arrived quite tense, had red goopy eyes and snorted at everything. I did ride him a couple of times and, although he was tense, he was well mannered. On advice I added Lucerne to his ration (for top-line) and couldnt ride for two weeks because of the weather. I had introduced it slowly and only built up to about four double handfuls twice a day but when I did get a chance to ride he just exploded into a bucking fit when asked to walk off after mounting. (I am still recovering - gives you some idea how violent this episode was). His specific issues were very tense, bucking, tail clamping, upset going from sunlight to shadows, red eyes always oozing goop. A video of him being ridden by his previous owner showed uncontrolled head flicking. This sent me on a mission to find the cause enter Calm Healthy Horses. I immediately took him off the Lucerne and put him on beet pulp, oaten chaff. To this I added SOS, Graze Ezy and Supreme Vitamins and Minerals and toxin binder. He was already getting salt and Magnesium oxide (stopped this when started with your products). He also got hay (our own pasture which has good horse grasses). There is still a little way to go but the improvement has been nothing short of phenomenal! His diet consists of: Pasture - almost completely native/brown top grass with a tiny bit of cocksfoot. No clover. The grass length varies, some is quite long (fenced off last season) green but not lush like a dairy pasture. Oaten chaff, beet pulp, rice-bran oil and salt. Now on 2 scoops day SOS (was 4 per day), 2 scoops Graze Ezy (was 4 per day) and Supreme Vitamins and Minerals. My other horse Monty (Arab) is on the same pasture. He is in excellent condition and is a really lovely horse in so many ways except he was suffering from extreme separation anxiety and spookiness. He was very reactive and would rub his nose on his front leg when being ridden. The wind really upset him. After seeing the progress with Darcy I started adding SOS and Graze Ezy to Montys feed - just two scoops per day of each. He is much, much better! I really appreciate your time and advice and may I say your web site is a life saver for both horses and riders. I will be forever grateful that I found it Kind regards Ann Kerr, Tasmania

06.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day to all you legends out there,

06.01.2022 STAGGERS: Is it about Minerals, Mycotoxins or Wobbler Syndrome? Staggers has been rampant in many regions of New Zealand this Autumn. The name Staggers g...ives you a good indication of what happens to horses when afflicted. They lose neuro-muscular co-ordination and walk like they have had a few too many drinks! WHAT ARE THE SIGNS? Muscular weakness giving out in the hind quarters . Plaiting with the front legs while walking, see video here: http://calmhealthyhorses.com/neuro/staggers.html Heavy on the forehand, stumbling/tripping over nothing . Uncharacteristic stopping at jumps . Cant seem to back up Standing base wide . Trouble judging distances as if their eyesight is affected, . Spooking at things underneath them, ie while jumping Being Hypersensitive to noises The Zonked look (Sleepy eyed, ears askew - see pic) Difficulty walking downhill For every extreme case, where the horse develops full blown staggers and its really obvious, there are hundreds of mild to moderate cases with maybe a touch of these symptoms do not ignore them! It is common anywhere there are cool-season grasses (NZ, the UK, lower regions of Australia). Frequently mistaken for Wobbler Syndrome - where there is an actual lesion affecting the vertebrae of the neck, verifiable by X-Ray and is usually only seen in younger horses. It is advisable to investigate the other two causes of these symptoms BEFORE giving up on the horse! WHAT ARE THE CAUSES? There is a great deal of confusion around about Staggers. Everybody thinks it is a toxin problem whereas in actual fact there are TWO possible causes 1. An endophyte fungus in Perennial Rye-Grass which in late summer/autumn can produce a specific mycotoxin which causes Rye-Grass Staggers in livestock. 2. Season related mineral imbalances in ANY SPECIES of grass, whether horse-friendly or not. This is by far the most common cause as most horses who get staggers are not grazing Perennial Rye-Grass. Having endophyte free grass doesnt mean the horses will never go down with staggers and no amount of toxin binder is going to help the horse if it is the mineral imbalance variety of staggers. HOW CAN WE PREVENT IT? A. If you dont have a grass-free Dry Lot option available to avoid exposure to the culprit grass then ensure all your horses consume as much hay as possible every day. Do whatever you can to reduce access to the fresh green Autumn grass especially any shoots which spring from the ground after a drought breaking rain B. Horses that are kept up on all their minerals including salt are far less susceptible. Add salt daily to their feeds along with GrazeEzy and AlleviateC/SOS over danger periods of grass growth. WHAT DO WE DO IF THE HORSE DEVELOPS STAGGERS? 1. Remove them from the offending pasture 2. Keep them out of trouble by putting them in a safe environment where they cant hurt themselves by falling into ditches or fences. For obvious reasons move them off any slopes or hills to somewhere flat. 3. Feed ad-lib plain grass hay, (no rye, clover or lucerne) 4. Check salt intake, if you are not already including it in the feed make sure you do at least a Tbsp per feed twice a day for average sized hack. 5. Give them GrazeEzy and SOS multiple times a day, either in a small plain feed of oaten or meadow chaff with some soaked beet or dissolved in water and syringed. Time frames for regaining co-ordination vary from horse to horse but are usually around 1-10 days. If you dont see improvements after 2-3 days please contact us to help identify what is getting in the way.

05.01.2022 Beware when Buying and Selling Horses & Ponies There have been several cases lately where people have sold horses to good people who have experienced an immedia...te change in the horse because of the change in the grazing. The first thought is that people have been duped by the seller and rest assured, this is nearly always not the case. It is a booby trap that is very easy to fall in to. It is not uncommon for perfectly good horses to turn bad when moved on to another home. Some people have bought well trained, well bred, very expensive horses from overseas only to have them develop issues such as head-shaking or random bolting, when turned out on NZ pasture It is not uncommon for horses to be sold because they are deemed difficult or need an experienced rider. Other horses end up as dog tucker because they have scared or hurt their owner with their Grass Affected behaviour. Or they are put down because they have become too high maintenance or are just too much trouble. Sadly some horses are euthanized because no one can get to the bottom of the problem. We are often the last stop for horses for whom everything else has failed. Most people are under the mistaken idea that having access to a reasonable sized paddock of grass is all you need in order to be able to own a horse. Thats what we thought years ago too but as with most things there is more to it. Thats the purpose of this page: to help people understand what goes wrong and what to do about it, thereby avoiding all these scenarios. For example: A pony who was known to be over-sensitive and sometimes explosive, is sold to a new home with full disclosure but no vetting of the new home. The new owner did not believe in Grass Affected horses and turned the pony out onto spring grass (rye/clover). Three days later she went to ride the previously very quiet pony and, on saddling, he bucked like a rodeo bronc. This pony has been pts. Recently we were contacted by another woman, who sold a pony, which had been grazing coastal, dry grass and hay and had been really well behaved, to some people who had lush green grass. Within a couple of days the horse is pulling back and wont go. Their first thought is that the pony has not been broken in properly and that the sellers had been dishonest. A few years ago there was a Disputes Tribunal case which arose because a horse which was deemed bomb-proof by the seller, whose property was hill country, was sold to some people in Taranaki who lived on a dairy farm. Within a few weeks the horse was spooking violently and they wanted their money back. Of course the seller was angry because in her eyes they had ruined the horse and the buyers were upset because they thought they had been duped. Another, very accomplished show pony was sold for a large sum as the daughter had outgrown him. The new owners travelled north and spent the weekend learning all about him before they bought him. They received a thorough briefing on how to manage the pony especially over spring. They eventually moved him down to their own property, all went well and the new owner even won some ribbons. However, come spring they obviously failed to follow the advice they had been given and the pony started bucking. The new owners decided they wanted their money back. This case also went to the Disputes Tribunal and incredibly, the original seller lost despite the several months that had elapsed between the purchase and all the trouble starting. We were involved in this case but were up against the fact that the referee knew nothing about horses and did not find it remotely plausible that the pasture grass could be the cause of the problems, meaning that this was a management issue not a naughty pony issue. The full purchase price had to be refunded. We soon found a new home for this pony with people who understood and he did not cause an ounce of trouble thereafter, taking kids to pony club and winning many more ribbons. Of course there had been nothing wrong with him all along other than the pasture he had been consuming. Meanwhile the poor sellers had been through hell over the whole stressful and very unpleasant business. Photos: Horses can be impossible to sell when they are chronically grass-affected. Beautiful Sabrina was a mess and was given to us because nobody wanted her and she couldnt get in foal. No wonder when we saw her paddock which was 100% extremely short clover! She couldnt be caught and was a general nightmare to handle. Somehow we got her home, integrated her with our herd on their Track, fed her lots of hay and our great Minerals and she turned out to be delightful. Subsequently she had 2 foals and was an easy breeder. It is amazing the difference when you get all the clover out of their diet!
