25.01.2022 July is National Desexing Month! Desexing is not only the responsible thing to do but has multiple health benefits for your pet. Desexing your female cat or dog reduces the risk of mammary cancer, unwanted pregnancies, uterine infections and can also have behavioural benefits.... Likewise in males, desexing reduces wandering as well as helping to prevent prostate enlargement, cancer and testicular cancer. For the month of July Rural Vet Services are offering a 10% discount for all desexing If you would like any further information regarding the process and benefits of desexing or would like to book your pet in for desexing please call the clinic on 08 87621885. * Please note New SA Laws began 1 July 2019 that all cats and dogs born after 1 July 2018 must be desexed by the age of 6 months.

20.01.2022 A testimony from Chelsea, one of our lovely customers with Gus. Chelsea was recommended to try Royal Cainin Hypoallergenic for Gus, a 2.5yr old Boston Terrier with signs of an irritable bowel. "Our dog Gus has suffered from runny stools for his life. He would need to go 3-4 times each day and would have requiring wiping before he could come inside. Gus also suffered from regular flatulence that would clear the room! We even had to purchase an air-purifier! ... We always knew when Gus had eaten something unusual because he would get the runs....we warned everyone not to give him treats! We have tried many different grain-free dog foods with some success but ultimately we couldn't find one that ensured 100% solid stools that dropped off and didn't need to be cleaned. Gus loves his Royal Canin Hypoallergenic, he doesn't look for any other food and his stools are always solid - no more wiping! I would definitely recommend this for any dog suffering from irritable bowel. Everyone is much happier and we haven't had to use our purifier!"

17.01.2022 It’s that time of year again; the sun is starting to appear more and it’s warming up As everyone is getting excited for summer, unfortunately, it does bring with it the potentially deadly problem of snakes . Most of the time owners do not see the snake actually bite the animal; they either find the offending snake (usually with some teeth marks in it!) or just notice their pet acting unusually and the actual bite site is very rarely found. The usual signs of a snake bite... by a tiger or brown snake are: Sudden weakness followed by collapse Shaking or twitching of the muscles (causing affected animals to stagger) Drooling/vomiting Dilated (large) pupils As the toxins move through the body, a progressive paralysis may occur (animals may not be able to walk or even hold their head up) Breathing may become rapid and shallow Blood in urine or vomit If your pet displays any of these signs or you have seen them playing with a snake it is vital that you seek Veterinarian attention immediately. Signs of snake bite may occur as shortly as 20 minutes after being bitten, although some animals may not show signs of being affected until up to 24 hours afterwards. If you are worried at all, give us a call on 08 8762 1885

12.01.2022 We’ve officially started grass seed season at Rural Vets Grass seeds present in all shapes and sizes. Grass seeds can be sometimes really hard to see and it does not take too long until they burry themselves into flesh causing pain and discomfort. The most common locations for grass seed to be found are between the toes, inside the ears and under the eye lids because dogs and cats spend lots of time outdoors sniffing around. The other more exotic locations are inside the no...strils, tonsils, armpits and groins. The symptoms will depend on the location of the grass seed. Lameness, swollen paw, a small bubble with a draining hole between the toes are very common findings. Shaking head, sneezing, bloody nasal discharge, difficulties swallowing, squinting and weepy eyes can also be noticed. ? 1. Make your pet Bold and Beautiful. Short coat will make it a fair bit easier to find the nasty little things 2. Check your pet daily with special attention to the above mentioned areas. 3. Brushing also helps as well as regular bath 4. If you see something that could be a grass seed please take it to your vet. The grass seed will often keep going deeper and deeper and it will be harder and more expensive to remove 5. Avoid walking your pet in the parks with many grass seeds, stick to pedestrian paths 6. Cut your grass short before it flowers and keep it short.

12.01.2022 * - * This beautiful boy is Tigger. He is snuggly, loving and fully house trained. Tiger is a desexed 5yr old male who needs a family who can give him the attention he desires. He is up to date with vaccinations and is good with dogs. He would however best suit a home with no other cats. If you or anyone you know is interested in giving him a forever home, please phone the clinic on 08 8762 1885.

11.01.2022 Happy Monday everyone, the team at Rural Vets hope you have a great week!

10.01.2022 Just like people, dogs can be allergic to common substances in the environment, such as grass and tree pollen, mold, and dust mites. Dogs may also be allergic to fleas, carpets, insecticides, and even ingredients in shampoos. These allergens trigger itch, and depending on what is causing the allergy, your dog may suffer seasonallyor all year round. To get relief from allergic itch, your dog may scratch, lick, chew, or bite, which unfortunately can make things worse and even lead to skin infection or a rash. If you notice your dog is itchy, it is important to make an appointment with your veterinarian, get it checked out and discuss the variety of options available

09.01.2022 Did You Know? A dog’s sense of smell is so precise, it could detect a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water, or two Olympic-sized pools worth. A dog’s nose is also the equivalent of a human fingerprint, with each having a unique pattern of ridges and creases

06.01.2022 As we approach lamb marking, take time to consider using Numnuts. The Numnuts device applies elastrator rings over the tail and scrotum, then a gentle push of the orange button injects an accurate dose of fast-acting NumOcaine local anaesthetic. The Numnuts system eases the acute pain associated with rubber rings, significantly reducing the stress on the lambs, allowing faster mothering up and low-stress movement back to the paddocks after marking.... for further information, or to inquire about getting your hands on some NumOcaine, give us a call on 08 87621885

06.01.2022 Rural Vets now offers a grooming service from the Naracoorte Clinic. All grooms by appointment. For further information, please call the clinic on 08 8762 1885 *GROOM TIMES* Monday & Thursday: 3pm - 5:30pm Tuesday: 1pm - 4:30pm
