23.01.2022 With the Stage 3 restrictions about to commence in regional Victoria I would like to reassure my valued clients that I will be operating as usual in Victoria only. I believe I can do this safely by continuous sanitising, wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing and offering contact free payment option. Please pm, txt or call 0419591557 for enquiries.

22.01.2022 It’s very rewarding when I get feedback. Makes me warm and fuzzy inside Happy Face Timeliness, Other, Offerings, Customer Service, Quality Very friendly and loved the way how gentle you were with the boys. Also good to have the feedback of what was happening with their teeth. Look forward to seeing you again next year.

20.01.2022 Good morning I don't normally pick up hitch hikers but this little fellow is an exception to the rule

20.01.2022 As you can see from the photos this mare presented with extreme feed packing in her cheeks. She is 25yo and in very good condition for the amount of periodontal disease present in both upper arcades. A very good local vet administered sedation and pain killers so that I could remove three molars that where diseased. One upper nearside and two upper off side. I think she will be much happier with these gone. It just goes to show that good body condition does not always mean good dental health.

20.01.2022 Please don’t believe everything some people say about non-veterinarian Equine Dentistry. Do some research, ask questions. Lately I have been hearing A dentist can’t get to the last molar without a vet sedation. This makes me quite upset to think that certain people can say these things that are not true and damage the reputations of all Equine Dentist’s. Yes I get that there are some ED’s out there that do not work to the standards to which I have been trained. I have been ...trained to NEDP standards which I believe to be up there with the best out there. Most horses I find don’t require sedation unless there are pain issues or the horse doesn’t know how to cope with the procedure and sometimes unfortunately I don’t have the extended time it would take to work with the horses frame of mind. And as for reaching all areas of the oral cavity, this is not an issue for those who are trained to do so properly. If a horse cannot open its mouth wide enough for me to do this then there is likely an issue in the TMJ for example arthritis, this needs to be explored further. For more information on my methods please check out the NEDP website https://nedp.com.au/ See more

18.01.2022 All sugars promote the growth of mouth bacteria that produce acid and cause tooth decay and makes for an unhealthy oral environment. Unrefined sugars such as honey, maple syrup, and molasses are just as damaging as refined white sugar in this respect. If you must feed a salt or mineral block, please check the ingredients for molasses. Even some premixed feed will have it. Read the fine print

18.01.2022 At this stage I am still able to treat horses as I can meet the requirements for social distancing being out doors and holding the horse on my own, of which I do a lot of the time anyway. All my equipment is soaking in Chlorohexadine disinfectant and my hands are constantly in and out of my stainless steel bucket of soaking tools. One change is not to accept cash and I have just bought a Square reader which can take card payments or clients can transfer on the day. Obviously if either myself or a client is unwell at all then we need to reschedule Stay fit and healthy everyone

17.01.2022 A fresh start to the day

16.01.2022 Good morning. I know this is not dental related but thought it was an interesting read https://cooperativehorse.com//in-light-and-dark-your-hor/

11.01.2022 **The following post shows images of an equine stomach post mortem. ** STOMACH SIZE I get asked all the time about feed and all manner of horse care topics. Alo...ng with all of the usual discussions about type of feed for particular horses, weights of feed etc... there is the topic of HOW MUCH to feed. How many dippers of chaff, how full should the 20litre bucket be, 1 feed per day or two??? Through the amazing process of dissections we have been involved in, we always look at the stomach. Sometimes finding ulcers or bots and varying degrees of health of the stomach lining. One thing I’ve noticed is that the larger horses of mixed breed (say between 14-17hh) is that the stomach size doesn’t vary all that much. Horses are grazing animals, we know this. Horses do well on smaller feeds more often, we also know this. A lot of people struggle to truly grasp this until they see it or it is explained thoroughly enough for them to fully understand from an anatomy perspective. Here I will show you a stomach (approx 15.2hh tb mare) she had had a normal breakfast but also a big special bucket of carrots and apples right before being laid to rest (not her daily feed, just a one off treat bucket) and then the contents of that stomach in relation to a very average sized 15 litre tub. I will also show you the absolute MAXIMUM sized feed I would ever feed a horse of that size. There are plenty of great articles around that talk about overflow of undigested feed into the hindgut and the subsequent problems, feed sizes and ulcers, gut health in all forms but I’m not here to talk about that. I am simply sharing in order to give the average horse owner a deeper understanding of the relative lack of size of the average sized horses stomach ** This post is not about what to feed or even how often. That will be very specific to each horse, it’s environment and situation. Please seek advice from your trusted equine veterinarian or independent nutritionist. ** Dissection with thanks and in conjunction with Southern Holistic Equine & Ev’s Equine Services

07.01.2022 Just a couple of happy snaps of non-sedated regular patients. I also managed to locate and remove an extreme amount of scaling build up on the buccal side of the 106 & 206. This gelding was seen less than 12 months ago and there was no sign of it back then. Since seeing him last his diet included a large amount of pellet feed of which he no longer gets so hopefully this will not build up again. You can see in two of the pics the large flat slabs of scaling that was removed.

07.01.2022 Where am I today? A local should know

06.01.2022 This little 2yo welsh pony stallion had enormous wolf teeth. With the help of a descent sedation from the vet I was able to remove them. The second photo is with what I consider average size wolf teeth taken from a horse. There are two reasons why we like to remove these teeth at a young age. One is that they can interfere with the bit so when it comes time to be mouthed it makes for a more comfortable pony or horse. Originally these teeth where the first molar but are evolving out and are quite small in comparison and are not set in the jaw bone like a molar is. Being shallow makes it unstable and painful when the bit goes near it. Second is because of its placement and shallow root it is prone to gum disease.

04.01.2022 Yay! Now that the restrictions are easing off a little I feel it’s time for me start getting back out there. I would like to thank all of my wonderful existing and new clients for being patient and understanding during these unknown times. Please be patient while I work through my list and feel free to let me know if you feel your horse is needing urgent care and I will do my best to get there ASAP.
