25.01.2022 The WA Rural Health Conference 2021 is just a few short months away. With the theme being "lessons learnt from past disasters" we will focus on learnings and effects from the recent disasters and how they have impacted both Australia and the world and how we can prepare for future adversities. With three brilliant speakers lined up including Associate Professor Ruth Stewart, Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM and Rabia Siddique we thought it was time to introduce you them one-by...-one. First up Rabia Siddique: Rabia Siddique is an Australian criminal and human rights lawyer, retired British Army officer, former terrorism and war crimes prosecutor, international humanitarian, hostage survivor, professional speaker, advocate and published author. Get a glimpse of her story below and to register to see her live at next year's conference visit https://ruralhealthwest.eventsair.com/2021-wa-rhc/ https://youtu.be/vezpkGM5efA

24.01.2022 Passionate educator recognised as Life Member Emergency specialist, Professor Antonio (Tony) Celenza was yesterday inducted as a Life Member of Rural Health West in recognition of his work to upskill countless rural and aspiring rural doctors. Tony is a specialist emergency physician at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Professor of Emergency Medicine for The University of Western Australia’s medical school. For the past 20 years, he has also designed, developed and presente...d a range of emergency workshops for Rural Health West. Rural Health West Chair Hon. Tuck Waldron said Tony’s involvement in Rural Health West’s professional development program has been instrumental in ensuring rural doctors and emergency department nurses are well prepared to manage the many and varied patient presentations they are called upon to manage. Many rural doctors and nurses work in small teams and prior to the Emergency Telehealth Service, were often required to manage critically ill and injured patients without the support and guidance of emergency specialists, Tuck said. Over the past 20 years, Tony has been working with Rural Health West to develop relevant upskilling to ensure rural health professionals are highly competent and feel confident in stabilising and managing a broad range of patient presentations. The courses and workshops he has designed are highly interactive and practical, with participants encouraged to share their own clinical experiences to further tailor training to their specific needs. Tony has developed workshops covering critical airway and respiratory management, critical illness, and toxicological, neurological, orthopaedic and cardiovascular emergencies. He was the mastermind behind a suite of outdoor, multi-event emergency weekends, including the Rural and Remote Retrieval Weekend, which has been hosted at both El Questro and Karijini National Park, and attracts medical professionals from across Australia. He also developed the Rotto Ramble event, a three-day adventure race across Rottnest Island for junior doctors and medical students designed to test their emergency knowledge and skills in responding to scenarios such as drownings, shark attacks and impalements. Tony has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching, including a citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council. Rural Health West delivers more than 30 professional development workshops for health professionals throughout Western Australia each year, funded through the WA Country Health Service and Australian Government Department of Health. Tony joins Emeritus Professor Max Kamien, Dr Felicity Jeffries, Dr Mal Hodsdon, Professor Geoff Riley AM and Dr Stephen Langford as a Life Member of Rural Health West. Congratulations Tony!

22.01.2022 Support for rural doctors via new free tele-counselling service Rural doctors and medical students now have access to free tele-counselling thanks to a new service delivered through DRS4DRS. Doctors Health Advisory Service WA (DHASWA) medical director Doctor David Oldham said he hoped the new service would help support doctors in remote and rural areas who have less access to medical and psychological supports than their metropolitan colleagues.... Rural doctors can access up to three free tele-counselling sessions per year through the service, with additional appointments available on a case-by-case basis, he said. Dr Oldham said the commencement of the service coincided with increased stress on doctors due to COVID-19. What we found was in March when it start to ramp up in Italy and Spain, that many health professionals were becoming concerned. The term that is used is pre-traumatic stress disorder and that’s where people were understandably worried about factors like the health of their patients, their own health and so on, he said. Personal protective equipment (PPE) was a huge issue early on, and doctors also wanted clear guidelines and resources to manage patients. Telehealth was a good alternative for some doctors as it removed the risk of infection, but enabled patients to access healthcare. Many practices saw a decline in patient numbers with patients reluctant to risk exposure from other patients. Doctors not only had to worry about themselves but all their staff in the practice, so as you can imagine there was a lot of anxiety. Dr Oldham said while WA has returned to relative normal, it was important doctors and medical students in remote regions had access to support. We do know doctors in rural areas are often more stressed than their metropolitan colleagues, so it is important they are aware of the service should they require it, he said. They are also at a higher risk than the general community for stress related disorders so we need to provide them with information and remind doctors to check whether their colleagues are OK. The tele-counselling service complements DHASWA’s 24 hour, seven day a week telephone advice service, which has been operating for 15 years. THE ESSENTIALS: To access the counselling service look under Telemedicine on the Drs4Drs website: https://www.drs4drs.com.au/getting-help/. 11.01.2022 Happy NAIDOC Week 2021. This year, NAIDOC Week will be celebrated differently to ensure we can protect those most vulnerable in our community such as Elders and those with pre-existing health conditions from COVID-19. This year’s NAIDOC week theme Heal Country, calls on all of us to continue the work of our ancestors in caring for and protecting the Country that sustains us. ... It encourages us to keep fighting for greater protections for our lands and waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage, defending them from exploitation, desecration, and destruction. Country is more than just a place; it is inherent to our identity. When we speak of Country, we speak about an entity, sustaining our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. NAIDOC 2021 invites the nation to embrace First Nations people's cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage, and to respect that knowledge. For generations we have been calling for stronger measures to recognise, protect, and maintain all aspects of our culture and heritage. No matter whether you celebrate at home or in community, there are lots of ways you can honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples this NAIDOC Week. Below are some ideas to help you celebrate NAIDOC Week 2021: https://www.naidoc.org.au//top-20-tips-get-involved-naidoc Pictured: 2021 National NAIDOC logo Care for Country, Artist Maggie-Jean Douglas. #NAIDOC2021 #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC
