25.01.2022 I did take a video but my new phone is not playing nice - and when Naurelle cant make it work either you know it is the phone, not the operator! There are leaves appearing on the plum tree at home - Im not joking either - a MASSIVELY early Spring. We seem to be about 3 weeks ahead of normal times, there are also leaves appearing on the Logan Berry. I predict if we have another 1 or 2 sunny days (and today is looking likely to be a sunny day so far) the blossoms will be out ...here at the factory. All this means I have even less time to do what is required - I need to prune, pot up, fix up all the netting, graft ..... the list is so long .... all whilst making and delivering tanks & garden beds. I need another 3 mes at the moment. I might try to take a video of the leaves with my old phone to post. Stay COVID safe, enjoy the sun if you have it and happy gardening. See more

24.01.2022 Happy Australia Day - and happy birthday to our son, an Australia Day baby!!

23.01.2022 And so it begins again........

23.01.2022 A job going in our local area - its a little bit more involved than just gardening but it might just be the "something" youve been looking for.

22.01.2022 The days are getting longer and Spring has really hit another gear - its early I know, it is officially still Winter for another 2 weeks - anyhow it is getting a little late for grafting but Im still having a go. It has been hard to find the time as it is so busy still but I have stolen an hour here and there before home time to do a little bit. After I finish the tank Im working on this morning I will try to take a video of where the "Experiment Tree" is at.

21.01.2022 That cherry face though! #homegrown #cherries #freshfood

21.01.2022 Another basket of fresh yummy food straight from the garden. #growyourownfood #gardening #localproduce #cleaneating #goseymour #seymourvictoria #berries #kitchengarden

20.01.2022 So we now have a trailer for our truck. Some work and modifications to do, got to get her on the road first, then to making it into the ultimate garden bed carting unit which may also cart tanks from time to time.

20.01.2022 Loving this wicking bed pic from one of our happy customers. #wickingbed #gardening #garden #colorbond #sustainability

19.01.2022 It certainly hasn't slowed up any yet, I still haven't had the time to reinvigorate the wicking bed I moved, most of the stuff has gone to seed. The seeds we planted have had a fairly poor showing, Tomato's usually sprout easily but this season there seem to be a lot of no shows. I am going to try to get some more in this week if I can get all the stuff out I need to. Meanwhile the tea leaves didn't stop the curly leaf on the tree most affected - others that only had slight i...nfection seem to have been successful but not the main problem tree. Pity, it is a nice clingstone variety. The semi is still not on the road yet, I am hoping this will change shortly, I have it booked in tomorrow for some work, I am waiting on a mirror (seems like it has taken forever) and I am hoping to present it for a RWC inspection next week. All going well and it passes it should be operational by the end of next week. That will be a HUGE help. I missed the Tallarook Market last week but I am planning to attend in December at this stage all things going well. Christmas is fast approaching, the first and earliest variety of Cherries are edible but a few more days and they will be fully ripe. Thankfully the nets are on to stop the birds. Thanks to mum for doing some much needed weeding out here, I am struggling to even mow the lawn let alone get time to weed! That said I managed to get the kids to come out here to plant some things out so hopefully they will have another go maybe this weekend. At least the weather is warming up, not like last year. Cheers -Dave

19.01.2022 I sometimes get asked what is involved in constructing wicking beds - well this is one part of it. This is a video of me flanging over the edge so a bottom can be attached. It is sealed after the bottom is hammered on and then the fittings put in.

18.01.2022 Another busy day ahead, after a long one yesterday. Truck update: She goes in for a roadworthy next week, fingers crossed she passes and then we can put her to work. There are a few touch ups required before it is fully functional but I envisage that can be done along the way. A unique gate system to allow carting all the varied shaped and sized garden & Wicking Beds, marine carpet on the deck and tool box underneath. The trailer also needs a coat of jam but that is not on th...e urgent list, that's something for when there is more time. The cherries are ripe on the early variety and the kids are still mowing into them. I even found a ripe youngberry yesterday evening, I didn't look for any more but I will today if I get back earlier than I did yesterday! It is also time to start harvesting some of the garlic I planted on ANZAC Day - plant on ANZAC = harvest on Remembrance Day. I did pull up 2 of each of the varieties and they are drying nicely. Onions are looking good too, I like to plant some thickly and start harvesting early using the tops as spring onions thinning them out so the ones left have room to grow. OK, time to start loading the truck!!

17.01.2022 Who loves a fresh harvest?

17.01.2022 So I said we looked as if we were going to get an early Spring - well some blossom is out, I saw a tree in Nagambie yesterday on a delivery in full bloom and plum tree that has a few burst. Welcome early Spring!

17.01.2022 As a semi regular guest on 103.9 FM I urge you to help if you can. The station is run by a band of dedicated volunteers and to have some vandals and thieves destroy what so many people have worked so hard to achieve is just horrible. Thank you

17.01.2022 Hi all, Tomorrow is the Tallarook Farmers Market, I'll be there. New hours 8:30 - 12:00, I'll have a range of raised garden beds on display, sorry no seedlings but I will have some seeds and worm juice. Hope to see you there!

16.01.2022 Another day on the road delivering - cheers.

16.01.2022 My onions are well and truly wanting to go into the garden beds. They are waving at me in the breeze so I am pinching some time today to plant some out.

15.01.2022 After sowing the carrots a couple of weeks ago, they have now germinated.

14.01.2022 Keep an eye out for the new addition to the Rural Tanks & Garden Beds yard. We have a little bit of work to do on it yet but Im hopeful to give you a sneak peak in a week or so.......

12.01.2022 This is the newest addition to our business. I have to do a bit to put her on the road, but hopefully not too much. We also need a trailer. Hopefully we will soon be on the road with her. Cheers... -Dave See more

12.01.2022 Well yesterdays plans kinda skewed to put a bit of a dent in plans for the next few days or so. The truck did a wheel bearing and I was stranded at Coldstream for a few hours. The towing company were going to be a while getting to me and then out of the blue a low loader pulled up just near where I was parked and unloaded a backhoe to do some work. I thought there is nothing to lose so I asked if they would be interested in doing a foreigner? Yes, the driver, a young fella w...as all excited, the boss agreed and so the old girl (still loaded to the hilt with garden beds) took a ride back home on the back of a Mack. She will be off the road for a couple of days to a week depending on damage. We are hoping I caught it before any real damage was done so hopefully it is just a new bearing.

11.01.2022 Check out these guys, local Seymour gurus!

09.01.2022 Welsh Industries have done a magnificent job at this property utilizing our wicking beds.

09.01.2022 Normally this time of year wed be away on holiday - escaping the cold but thanks to Corona Virus that isnt happening. Thankfully it hasnt been a really harsh Winter - and it is showing. I said early I think we are in for an early Spring and it seems we are - look at these trees ready to blossom and it is mid July!

09.01.2022 Did you know we make fire tanks that comply with the Victorian Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) ? Complete with CFA fitting and water point sign. #firesafety #bushfiresaustralia #shoplocal #galvanised #watertank #seymourvictoria #australianmade #madeinaustralia

09.01.2022 I used tea last year after the first bout of curly leaf struck this tree, it seemed to work, I will know for sure this year as I put the bags all around the base before the leaves burst. Next few weeks will tell.

08.01.2022 An update on the Wicking Beds, this is the one I shifted a little over 12 months ago and also the one I decided to accidentally drown a month or so ago. The Zucchini survived and has been producing steadily. I also decided to wander around and check out a few other things just for fun. Happy gardening -Dave

08.01.2022 Here we go again: The whispers are that there will be a stage 4 lock down.

07.01.2022 If you havent managed to get your garlic and onions in yet, best get a wriggle on.

06.01.2022 Are you a follower of this page and would like to visit? Consider a night or two staying at Blue Tongue Berries and put in the diary to visit me during your stay.

06.01.2022 I have been a bit absent on here for a while, I have also been mostly yet unintentionally ignoring the garden because it has been just so busy. Today I am on a run from outside Trentham across to Strathfieldsaye. Clocking up ks in the old girl. With Winter looming we have let the berries get away again without cutting back the old canes and re-training the new ones, but all is not lost, it will just be a bigger job than it should have been. I have planted out some seedlings... and managed to get some garlic & walking onions in before dark last week but I couldnt get any Dipel as the nursery had sold out so there is some Caterpillar damage. I do check them when I can and remove any eggs & caterpillars I find but I obviously didnt get them all. I had planned on topping up the wicking bed I moved and even toyed with the idea of making a frame and covering it to create a hot house - Ill see if I can steal some time and the weather will play fair to try it as there is still Capsicum & Tomato growing in it. I will also try to make another video showing how I grow Celery as somebody has asked and I cant for the life of me find the video I did - I have either deleted it or lost it or something, who knows? Some other projects are on the cards but for now its "make hay while the sun shines" because we really dont know what the next little while will bring - There is as much optimism as there is skepticism out there but there is one thing I do know and that is that Proper Preparations Prevents P___ Poor Performance so Im preparing by going full tilt while the work is there. Cheers & Happy gardening. -Dave

06.01.2022 Sooo we did the Tallarook Farmers Market, I was asked if I could add to my seedling stand - which Im happy to do - and now we are back in ISO again! Heres the thing: If I plant a large range of seedlings and this continues beyond 6 weeks it will be for nothing unless I find another way to move them. They dont cost me a lot of $$$ but it does take a considerable amount of time - I get the kids to help out which they like to do, well at least until the novelty wears off, the...n its all me again but with ISO that also presents problems. I need to start now or they wont be ready if the market goes ahead after 6 weeks. Depending on when things settle down again is also a factor in what I plant. There is no point planting seeds for Winter veg as in 6 weeks we will be bordering on Spring (YEEHAAA!!) but it might be a little early for Tomatos, Cucumbers, Zucchini etc. What to do? See more

05.01.2022 Its time to plant onions - this is how I do it.

05.01.2022 This Wicking Bed was shifted last year. Those that follow this page may remember the 3 video's I did showing all aspects of the move. You may remember I promised to keep regular updates coming but I have been so busy that hasn't happened as much as I'd like. That said, I had a bit of an incident that put progress back also - basically I put a hose running into it to "top it up a bit" and got busy therefore distracted and left it all day! I discovered Tomato's and Cucumbers d...on't like to swim!! Zucchini though doesn't appear to mind as this video shows. I will try to post further updates more often as things progress. This clearly demonstrates my theory of using bales of straw in the Wicking Beds rather than time consuming and costly alternative methods like using micro fibre & scoria and the like. It is a choice thing but I set up the other Wicking Bed in this clip in a couple of hours, so so much quicker and easier. Anyhow, it is time for me to get back into it, I have a lot of iron that got very wet yesterday with the Summer rains and it has to be rolled up. Cheers -Dave

05.01.2022 Over the last few years I have experimented on this poor tree and have managed to graft multiple varieties of fruit onto it. I have also tried to shape it, not to any specific design, just looking to see what is possible. I have achieved this to a point. I havent used any taught wires all are loose so the branches are able to move a bit. This year Spring has definately come early. Corona Virus has launched a massive wave of busy gardeners so I havent stopped; making it hard... to find time to do what I had planned to do. However it has also prevented us going away on holiday like we normally would have so that combined with a mild Winter has meant I have stolen an hour here and there to get stuck into this tree. I have removed a lot of busy growth, the thing with root stock is that it grows prolifically and if left unatended out of control. I should have been a lot meaner earlier but last year I spent time elsewhere and left this tree to just continue to grow. So now I have hacked it back quite severely but I also grafted more strategically which is something I never really worried about in the past. I just grafted whatever where ever. It will be interesting in the comming months to see the transformation. The original tree was a "Flowering Plum" and I have left a lot of those branches untouched - these are the pink blossoms the bees are loving, they are always early and the blossom combined with the red branches offer an attractive display. I still have a few more grafts to do this year so I will need to get onto it now, the time to do it is quickly dwindling! Happy gardening. -Dave

04.01.2022 Travelling a bit further afield tomorrow. This big load is heading for NSW.

04.01.2022 In this strange time of Corona Virus we also seem to be having a strange season. I said a couple of weeks ago it appeared we were on track for an early spring - the signs were there and now here it is - blossom - and it is still July! As we are locked down and cant escape the Winter this year, I grew a beard to help stave off the dreaded cold weather but Im thinking I may be optimistic and shave it off but I dont want to jinx myself, but really so far we havent had a hars...h Winter (and Im not complaining) and with one month to go anything could happen although the weather report says we have a 17 day on the way - Ill definatley take that. So I may have missed the boat for doing much grafting, and Im overdue to prune but it has been so busy - isolation has driven people into their gardens - perhaps a good thing in disguise? Anyhow, happy gardening in ISO!

04.01.2022 If anybody sends me email I am unable to respond at the moment, there seems to be some issue with Bigpond so I cant log on. Thanks -Dave

04.01.2022 For the first time I am attending the Tallarook Farmers Market on this weekend. I will have worm juice, a few seedlings (not as many as usual because of the covid 19 shut downs) and a small display of garden beds. Call in to have a look but please remember the social distancing rules.

03.01.2022 My daughter wrote this and pinned it on the fridge - pretty much sums up the feeling I think.
