25.01.2022 Are you a livestock producer who would like to know more about what analgesia (pain relief) options are available for your livestock? Why are so many producers in Western NSW using pain relief when lamb and calf marking? 1. Most importantly graziers recognise the welfare benefits of providing pain relief during these procedures. Providing adequate and appropriate analgesia also aids in post-procedure mothering-up and recovery. 2. Some producers comment that they notice prod...uction benefits when it comes to weight gains - although this has so far been difficult to prove scientifically. 3. Over time market pressure will continue to demand the use of analgesia during routine husbandry procedures. The use of analgesia can help secure your access to different markets. What analgesia is available for my livestock at the time of marking? - Most producers would be familiar with Tri-Solfen. Tri-Solfen is a topical gel that contains a mix of local anaesthetic, an antiseptic and adrenalin to reduce blood loss. After application pain relief is near immediate (within 1 minute) and lasts for at least 24 hours. - There are now two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) meloxicam options available - Metacam 20 (injectable) and Buccalgesic (oral gel). The onset of analgesia is slower with a NSAID but the duration of action is prolonged. - The newest available pain relief option is for castration and detailing. is an all-in-one device that enables ring and local anaesthetic application. Analgesia is almost instant with protection against the acute pain response, but duration only lasts about an hour. Rural Vets Australia recommends discussing all of your livestock’s analgesia options individually with your vet to ensure the best outcome for your livestock!
24.01.2022 What do you enjoy most about being a remote and mobile vet? I love getting out and about in small communities, talking to people and meeting their animals. The veterinary work can be challenging but it is really rewarding to be able to provide a service for a client that hasn’t traditionally been able to access veterinary care easily. ^ Sophie

17.01.2022 Why are fleas so hard to eliminate? Simply - fleas have adapted their lifecycle to survive. Fleas have a lifecycle that goes from an egg to larvae, to pupae and then into the adult flea for the cycle to start again. The lifecycle of the flea can be as little as 2-3 weeks but can last many months. How can the lifecycle be so long? Because fleas can remain dominant in some environments until there are optimal conditions to transition into the next life stage. Adult female fl...eas can lay up to 50 eggs per day, which then drop off into the environment (kennels, soil, carpet and bedding). These 50 eggs can then develop into 50 more adult fleas and the population booms. Did you know that fleas are also able to transmit tapeworms in dogs and cats? To eliminate fleas you need to think about fleas on your pet and in the environment. o Hot soapy wash all bedding, toys, rugs and collars o Hot soapy wash all bedding, toys, rugs, and collars o Treat all pets in the area with a good quality flea treatment. I recommend chewable tablets for pets like NexGard Spectra (monthly chews) or Bravecto (three monthly chews). If your pet is hard to tablet there is always the option of spot on! If you would like more information about the best flea prevention or elimination plan for your pets give Sophie a call on 0439 342 735 today!
