25.01.2022 Unfortunately I missed the costume memo for last night’s Financial Counsellors' Association of Western Australia conference dinner. But financial counsellors pr...ovide much-needed protection for people experiencing financial headwinds, so the mask theme did seem fitting. It was great to meet a number of passionate financial counsellors who have been helping to steer Western Australians through financial storm clouds and worse this year. The magic that financial counsellors often weave to support vulnerable people through difficult situations can go unrecognised in the broader community. That magic must be why one of the big awards of the night, which recognises financial counsellors who have made a remarkable difference, is called the Houdini Award. This year’s recipient, Tevita Naroba, is a financial counsellor from Kununurra. He was recognised for his life-changing work in supporting a single parent facing a crisis. The McGowan Government also recognises the importance of financial counsellors, which is why we invest more than $8 million in these services each year. We provided an additional $6.8 million in funding for financial counselling as part of the WA Recovery Plan, to help households and small businesses impacted by COVID-19 to get back on track. Congratulations to all the finalists and award recipients, and thank you for the vital work that you do to support our community.

23.01.2022 Beware of scammers! We have come across this scam first hand... we guess its still around because it works...! One of the things scammers do is to send an email supposedly from a business that you know and trade with, advising that they have changed their banking details. ... This is known as a payment redirection scam and it has cost Australian businesses over $14 million dollars in the last year! Current reports are suggesting that the average losses in 2021 are more than 5 times higher than the average losses same time last year! This happens when scammers hack into a legitimate email account such as your business email account or an employee’s and then pretend to be the business they then intercept invoices, amend the bank details then release the email to the intended recipients. If you or your staff receive an email advising of new payment details it always pays to contact the business that you trade with and just double check make sure you use the contact details you already have stored and don’t use the contact details on the email it can be difficult to recover the lost money! Watch for urgent payment requests, and where there is a request to change payment details. Often these scams are only detected when your regular supplier asks why they have not been paid. Payment redirection scams have been affecting businesses across many industries such as real estate, construction, law, recruitment, universities and even your local suppliers.
