17.01.2022 More than 2000 residents booked for kerbside collection in the first week for Townsville City Councils new kerbside collection system since its launch last week. Council will begin collecting the kerbside rubbish from residents who have booked from September 1.... Water and Waste Committee chairperson Russ Cook said the number of bookings in the first week were a good indicator that this new system will be popular among residents. In the week since our new booking system for kerbside rolled out, we’ve had 2,062 residents book a day for their kerbside rubbish to be collected, Cr Cook said. COVID-19 delayed the roll-out of the kerbside collection for 2020, but it also gave us a chance to redesign the system to address concerns residents had raised during previous years. The biggest concern residents had was that people were leaving hard waste on their kerb well before scheduled collection dates. The new process means people will know the exact day their rubbish needs to be put out. Residents will be eligible to book the service once a year and this booking system means they can do it when they have items they need to get rid of, rather than a suburb by suburb system which may have seen them miss out on accessing the service if the timing didn’t suit them. To book please go to the below link.

14.01.2022 UPDATE #12 - 21 December Water restrictions implemented following a rupture of the water pipe linking the Ross River Dam to the Douglas Water Treatment Plant on... 11 December have today been revoked. Following ongoing commissioning and careful testing of the pipeline since the repairs were completed, Council no longer considers that there is an urgent need for water restrictions pursuant to sections 41 and 43 of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008. Council’s water conservation measures remain within the Townsville area to help ensure the city’s water security. For more information on these measures, visit our website http://bit.ly/2tyebnY Council again thanks Townsville and Magnetic Island residents and business owners for their cooperation, understanding and patience.

11.01.2022 UPDATE #10 - 17 December Townsville City Council today announced a further easing of water restrictions implemented following a rupture of the water pipe linkin...g the Ross River Dam to the Douglas Water Treatment Plant late last week. From today, sprinklers can be used to water residential, rural and commercial lawns and gardens, including school grounds, between 6pm-8pm on the odds and evens system. Handheld watering can be undertaken at any time. Restrictions on washing vehicles and boats have been lifted, however the use of water efficient washing methods is strongly encouraged, including washing at water efficient commercial washing businesses. Commercial nurseries and market gardens can irrigate between 4pm-9am using water efficient sprinklers, hand-held triggers or twist nozzles, irrigation systems or a watering can or bucket. Watering is still not permitted between 9am-4pm. Sporting fields, including lawn bowls rinks, golf courses and the Cluden Park race course, can be irrigated using sprinklers between 6pm-8pm. Handheld watering is allowed at other times. The washing of hard surfaces is not permitted except: for-profit commercial operators engaged in the business of washing external surfaces of a building or paved surfaces under high pressure for the following purposes: pre-painting preparation activities; or pre-sale preparation activities; or complying with the provisions of a tenancy agreement or lease which require the external surface of a building to be cleaned at the expiry or termination of the tenancy or lease; or cleaning the external windows and glass areas of a building; or maintaining the external surfaces of a building (other than a roof area); or washing part of the external roof area of a building as part of the process of repainting or repairing the roof of the building; OR by water users such as abattoirs, food processing industries, care facilities, animal shelters and other industries or facilities with special needs (health/safety related only) Residential swimming pools can be filled and topped-up between 6-8pm using the odds-and-evens system. Commercial swimming pools can be filled and topped up from 6pm-8pm. Restrictions do not apply to the use of water for public health purposes or for stock watering. Water use on development sites is restricted to recycled water or bores. Repairs to the ruptured water pipe linking the Ross River Dam to the Douglas Water Treatment Plant are complete, with ongoing commissioning and testing. Pumping through the pipe is being increased slowly and air valves use to expel air. Investigations into the cause of the pipe rupture are ongoing. Council is committed to fully understanding why the pipe ruptured and until that has been determined, Council will proceed with caution. The water restrictions now in-place will support the reduced pipe capacity. Council had already commenced discussions with the Queensland and Australian Governments to install a new pipeline. Council again thanks Townsville and Magnetic Island residents and business owners for their cooperation, understanding and patience. Residents and business owners should monitor Townsville City Council’s Disaster Dashboard for latest information and updates http://disaster.townsville.qld.gov.au/

10.01.2022 Townsville’s own North Australian Festival of Arts (NAFA) is being recognised on the national stage by becoming a finalist in three categories of the prestigious Australian Event Awards. NAFA has been named as a finalist in the Best Cultural, Arts or Music Festival category, as well as the Best New Event and Best Community Event categories. Townsville City Council Mayor Jenny Hill said this was a great achievement for NAFA and the Townsville City Council team behind it.... NAFA is an events calendar highlight, and to have its impact recognised by the Australian Event Awards is a spectacular accomplishment for everyone involved in the inaugural offering of the festival, Cr Hill said. Past winners of the Australian Event Awards include Vivid Sydney, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Invictus Games and Splendour in the Grass, so NAFA is among great company by being named as a three-time finalist. Cr Hill said creating NAFA was part of the push to cement Townsville as the arts hub of Northern Australia. NAFA 2019 brought the best in Australian and international entertainment to Townsville for locals and visitors to enjoy across five huge weeks. The Council team behind NAFA should be very proud of delivering this ground-breaking festival, she said. More than 23,000 people attended ticketed events during last year’s festival, with thousands more visiting free events across the city. The influx of visitors who travelled to get a glimpse of the festival drove hotel stays up, which was great for our tourism and hospitality industries which were still hurting from the 2019 monsoon. Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney - Councillor for Division 3, Townsville said it was great that Council was still able to deliver the festival this year. The COVID-19 pandemic definitely threw a spanner in the works for a lot of planned events across Townsville, but we’ve managed to go ahead with our three big drawcards: the Horn v Tszyu fight, the V8 Supercars, and NAFA COVID Safe, Cr Greaney said. Winners of the Australian Event Awards will be announced on 21 October. For more information about NAFA, head to nafa-tsv.com.au.

09.01.2022 Last week I had the privilege to emcee the 2020 Cohort Graduation of Project Booyah - Townsville. There were 8 very special young ladies who graduated last Wednesday night at this event. There are a lot of outstanding facts and figures linked to this fantastic project but the one that really sticks in my mind is the fact that 86% of graduates (both young ladies and young men) re engage with education, this is a great result for these youth. I have been involved with Project Booyah for many years both as a Townsville City Council Councillor and also in previous roles working with young people in our great city of Townsville so have seen first hand the great work Booyah do. Thank you Project Booyah Townsville for once again allowing me to be part of this very special occasion and I wish all graduating girls the best of luck.
