25.01.2022 Hybrid bike update: You may remember my recent post about using my 700C hybrid bike off-road. I decided on a pair of Schwalbe CX Comp 700x30. I've had a quick test ride on a rocky gravel road and they seem quite good. Hopefully I'll get out to explore some trails this weekend.

12.01.2022 Cross Bike off-road update: It's been a while since I fitted my Schwalbe CX Comp cyclo-cross tyres to the Giant Perigee. Now I can't really call myself a reviewer because I really have nothing to compare their performance too but I can tell you of my experience riding on varied terrain from smooth fire roads through muddy 4WD tracks to well constructed single track. My evaluation.... TOTALLY AWESOME. Firstly, as soon as I put these tyres on I noticed how fast they were on the... road, surprisingly fast even compared to the basic 28 m.m. road tyres they replaced. And off road I can't believe the cornering and grip. Here's the thing, I have almost zero mountain biking skills and a similar level of fitness. But I've been able to climb horrible, rutted, rocky hills with ease, descend fast fire trails and negotiate twisty single track without incident. I really put this down mostly to the tyres. They just bite into the terrain and inspire confidence. Apart from being a bit more jarring on the body and the need to ride most terrain slower it really feels like I'm back on a 26" m.t.b. 10.01.2022 Help reduce the growing number of bicycles being added to landfill. Repair and re-use old ones. Hand kid's bikes down to younger ones as children grow out of them. Donate unwanted bikes to charities such as Men's Sheds so they can be used by people that really need them. And definitely seek the services of an experienced bicycle mechanic before writing that old bike off as " not fixable". Here's the phone number for one who can help: 0478385755. Hehe. :)

06.01.2022 I've recently contemplated getting another mountain bike to explore the many trails in the Coffs Harbour region. Then I realised that my hybrid bike is basically an M.T.B. with 700C wheels. The growing interest in cyclo-cross and gravel bikes over recent years may cause many riders to think about the real potential and the intended use of their "commuter" bikes. Hybrid bikes were always sold, in simple terms as "a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike". Soon I'll be swapping my 28m.m. road tires for a set of knobbly cyclo-cross tires, then it's off to explore fire trails and smooth single track. Watch this space.

02.01.2022 There's a lot going on right now that's affecting everyone. You all know what I'm referring too, I won't enter into any discussion on the many topics relating to current world wide events. But I will say one thing. This should be a wake up call for many people in regards to their health and fitness. I've let myself slip over recent years. I used to be a fit, strong road cyclist and runner, now I sometimes have trouble making it up a small flight of stairs without getting puff...ed. My point is, our future will almost certainly involve greater and greater threats, including perhaps increasing instances of serious pandemic disease. This current virus crisis is most dangerous to the weakest, sickest members of the community. I don't want to grow to be an old man with weak lungs and a useless immune system. I'm getting my fitness back and the bike is the best way I've ever known to get fit. The overall wellbeing of our society can only benefit from increased participation in healthy outdoor activities by it's members. A stronger, healthier society is better equipped to manage threats like the one the world now faces. See more
