22.01.2022 gday my fellow boaters as you are all aware (well I hope ya all are) that recreational boat is band on Qld waters until further notices. All face to face & practical testing cancelled until further notices (between 3-6 months) so we are told. The good news is while you are in isolation why not do your theory course online and when are given the all clear to restart our courses all you have to do is the practical test and paperwork. Our online courses are FREE of charge to d...o with a group of short videos followed by multi choose questions at the end of each section. Our website is www.boatlicensing.com.au go to Rusty and click and follow the prompts. To make this process more enjoyable why not take a few rums, beer or wine with cheese and crackers and think you are fishing in Morton Bay, South Stradbroke or the goldie. I will be looking forward to see ya all in the near further on our fantastic waterways. Stay safe and with a lot of luck we should be able to return to a normal life sooner rather then later, (well as normal as possible). cheers rusty See more

22.01.2022 I was out at St George this weekend and the Balonne River was up about 3metres since I was there in January. Although a tad chilly, the waterways were beautiful and the weather did it justice. Also in January, Broadwater was okay, the Chinchilla Weir was really sad and Lake Neverfill... what can I say, it was living up to its name. Would love to hear from the Dalby, Chinchilla and Roma locals as to how their waterways are holding up.

21.01.2022 Gday all Its Rustys long suffering wife here. Rusty is going through a bit of a rough patch at the moment and hes questioning his ability to provide good courses. I know Im biased and Rusty is far from perfect and has bad days like the rest of us but he does pour his heart and soul into his courses as he wants each and everyone of you to be safe on the water. Anyway, it doesnt matter what I tell him because Im his wife and like most men, he ignores me. So, I need your help. Could you please remind him that he does a great job and share something that youve taken away from the course thats helped you with your boating. Maybe hell listen to you fellas.

12.01.2022 MSQ issues Scariff Boat recall 16 January 2019 Customers to be contacted over Australian Builders Plate irregularities. Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) has asked Queensland boat importer, Scariff Boats, to contact more than 40 customers whose boats may be fitted with incorrect Australian Builders Plates (ABPs). The irregularities were discovered during an inspection of plates by MSQ officials at a boat show last year.... Maritime Safety Queensland acting general manager, Captain Glenn Hale, said the inspected boats had incorrect or missing information about the number of passengers they could safely carry. They found the Australian Builders Plates, which are required by law to be attached to vessels, in some cases allowed for more than twice the normal maximum loading weight for boats of that size, he said. This could easily give owners the wrong impression they were able to carry considerably more people on board than was safely allowed with potentially disastrous consequences. Maritime Safety Queensland has entered into a formal undertaking with Scarrif Boats requiring them to make every effort to contact the boat owners and let them know their builders plates are incorrect and must be changed. This is an extremely serious oversight and Maritime Safety Queensland has made it clear to the company failure to correct this issue could lead to legal action. They will also require Scariff Boats to implement a quality assurance system to ensure all current and future imported boats offered for sale comply with the ABP requirements. Anyone owning a Scariff boat should get in touch with the company to arrange a review of their boat and its ABP. Maritime Safety Queensland is also undertaking a wider review of vessel manufacturers and sellers to ensure no similar breaches are occurring in the industry, said Captain Hale. The action against Scariff Boats comes in the wake of an inspection of ABPs carried out during the Brisbane Boat Show last year and an increased focus on ABP compliance from maritime safety authorities around the country. In Victoria, Maritime Safety Victoria (MSV) has announced it is also carrying out an inspection program of ABP compliance including looking at the methods of calculating the correct loading and engine capacities. The program will continue until May 2019. Where there is reason to believe that requirements are not being met, manufacturers may be asked to provide copies of calculations and test reports which support the listed values, said Martin Jaggs, manager, maritime technical services. Non-compliance with the ABP requirements may result in regulatory action, including the use of improvement and prohibition notices. MSQ said anybody with concerns about a Scariff boat should contact the company at [email protected] or call 0410 651 000 or 07 3556 3480 See more

01.01.2022 Global Positioning System Rollover week06 April 2019Marine notice 1/2019 This marine notice advises Global Positioning System (GPS) users of potential issues that may occur with older GPS receiver time and positional accuracy as a result of the scheduled GPS week counter roll over on 06 April 2019. NAVAREA X 012/19 has been issued to inform shipping of potential issues. Background The GPS system transmits time to GPS receivers using a format of time and weeks from a start... date of 06 January 1980. GPS Rollover week occurs when the data field in the navigational message sent by GPS satellites reaches the maximum limit of 1023 weeks and rolls over to week zero. This last occurred in August 1999. Some older GPS receivers are unable to make the transition from week 1023 back to week zero. If your GPS receiver is outdated or has not had a software update, it may revert to reading the week zero as August 1999. When this happens, the internal clocks of these GPS receivers will experience a lack of absolute reference and may give incorrect time or position information, or may lock up permanently. Some GPS receivers may experience issues and disruptions prior to or after the rollover date. Some GPS receivers are repairable with upgrades, but others may become unusable. Newer receivers that are fully compliant with GPS ICD-200 should not encounter any issues. Considerations You should check with your GPS manufacturer regarding the status of your receiver. If you have any doubt as to whether your receiver is compliant you should contact the manufacturer or supplier. AMSA advises that GPS users should navigate with caution, having due regard for the potential errors that may occur with GPS receivers.
