25.01.2022 Like hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens, who gathered at memorials in cities, suburbs and towns across Australia, we joined together on Anzac Day to commemorate one of the most significant events in our national calendar. There is something very Australian in coming together for such a cause. There is also something very Australian in pitching-in and working together to turn a vision into reality. This year’s Anzac Day March and Service would not have been possible ...without the efforts and commitment of so many people. Thank you to the members of the Rutherglen RSL Sub-Branch and it’s committee for believing that a country town in rural Victoria could host such a significant event. Thanks also to the Rutherglen RSL Sub-Branch Woman’s Auxiliary and Rutherglen Lions Club for an outstanding breakfast and morning tea and to Victoria Police and Indigo Shire Council for assisting with Road closures and traffic management. Our biggest thanks must go to The Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and in particular the personnel of the Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Latchford Barracks who so willingly gave their time so that we may have the privilege of experiencing The Prince Philip Banner. 20.01.2022 On behalf of the Rutherglen RSL committee and its members I would like to thank the Rutherglen Fire Brigade for sounding their siren, the Rutherglen Primary School for playing The Last Post, Reveille and the National Anthems over their PA and to all those in the community that commemorated Anzac Day this morning in their own way. 18.01.2022 Thank you to the Chiltern Athenaeum Trust. The inaugural Night at the Museum at the Chiltern Athenaeum Museum was a wonderful experience. The Chiltern Remembers Exhibition is a beautiful and heart felt tribute to those from the Chiltern district who answered the trumpet call. It is open until May 31.

18.01.2022 The early light of dawn is always a magical time of the day. The quiet cool air and the faint glow and colour of the eastern horizon create an atmosphere that makes every Anzac Day Dawn Service unique and moving. The quintessential sounds of Australia - the beautiful caroling of Magpies punctuated by the joyous laugh of Kookaburras - made this years service unforgettable. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend.

13.01.2022 The Glenview ANZAC Day service is a wonderful tradition. Thank you to the team at Glenview for the opportunity to conduct the service again this year. We hope that it was a fitting tribute to those who served our country - and particularly those who also call Glenview home.

11.01.2022 Congratulations to the Rutherglen Cats for their hard fought win in the annual Diffey-Sutherland Memorial Shield competition. The members and Committee of Rutherglen RSL Sub-Branch would like to thank the Rutherglen Football and Netball Club for their hospitality and for the opportunity to conduct the memorial ceremony yesterday. We would also like to thank the Kiewa Sandy Creek Football Club and Kiewa Sandy Creek Netball Club for their participation in this important annual event and we look forward to another close competition when we return to Coulston Park in 2019.

10.01.2022 Yesterday was Vietnam Veterans Day as well as the Anniversary ofthe Battle of Long Tan. To Commemorate these events Wreaths were laid at Rutherglen Memorial Gardens and at the Cross of Sacrifice at the Carlyle Cemetery. In these challenging times I think it is important as ever to remember and pay our respects to members of our Defence Force especially those that paid the Supreme Sacrifice. 521 Australians lost their lives in the Vietnam War with more than 3,000 wounded. The Battle of Long Tan seen 18 Australians Soldiers killed with 24 wounded after a courages battle that seen Australian Soldiers outnumbered 10 - 1. Lest We Forget

09.01.2022 With the way things are in Australia at the moment the Commemorative Services for Anzac Day have been cancelled in Rutherglen. Because of this the Rutherglen RSL has asked the Rutherglen CFA to sound the fire siren just prior to 0600hrs on the 25 April then again 1 minute later as a mark of respect for the one minutes silence. If people reading this could let their neighbours and friends know so no one will be alarmed by the sounding of the siren. 08.01.2022 The 15th of August marks the 75th Anniversary of the end of World War 2. Almost 1 million Australians served during this war at a time when the population of Australia was only around 7 million. Fighting took place in many areas across the globe from, Europe, The Middle East, through South East Asia to the Pacific and even reaching the shores of Australia. Over 39,000 died and some 30,000 men and women were taken Prisoner of War. During this war some powerful bonds were crea...ted with our neighbours in the Pacific, especially on the Kokoda Track where the locals of Papua New Guinea carried supplies forward and transported seriously wounded and sick Australian soldiers to safety. Their compassion, courage and care earned them admiration and respect from the Australians, who dubbed them the fuzzy wuzzy angels. On the 15th of August (tomorrow) in Commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War and in memory of the men and women that served during this time a wreath will be laid at the Rutherglen Cenotaph and at the Cross of Sacrifice at Carlyle Cemetery. And if weather and conditions permit there will be a low level fly over by a Kittyhawk between 11 and 12. Lest We Forget See more

06.01.2022 Anzac Day Commemorations for Rutherglen 25 April 2021. The Rutherglen RSL Sub Branch will be holding Anzac Day Services as follows 5:55am Dawn Service at the Cenotaph 9:00am The normal March will take place from the Main Street of Rutherglen to the Cenotaph followed by our normal Service. Unfortunately due to COVID regulations we will Not be able to hold the breakfast after the Dawn Service and there will be No morning tea after the 9:00am Service. ... Two up in the Hall Supper rooms has also been cancelled along with the drinks that are normally had there. We will be having drinks at one of the local pubs from approximately 12:00pm onwards See more

04.01.2022 Subject: Public Health Advice The recent COVID occurrence in Perth has evolved rapidly, and the Victorian Chief Health Officer has released the following important advice. ---------- Advice: The Chief Health Officer has declared the Perth metropolitan area and Peel region in Western Australia red zones (other than for transit) under Victoria’s ‘traffic light’ travel permit system from 2:01am Victorian time on Saturday 24 April. Victorians in these areas must follow local dire...ctions. If they leave to enter Victoria while red zones are in effect, they must quarantine at home for 14 days. If non-Victorians in red zones enter Victoria, they will stay in Hotel Quarantine until a return flight is arranged. Additionally, if you are currently in Victoria and have been in the Perth metropolitan area and Peel region (other than for transit) between 17 April and 23 April inclusive, you must isolate, get a test within 72 hours, and stay isolated until you receive a negative result. Most of our neighbours were out in their driveways, and we have been for a walk around town this morning and it's amazing how many candles, posters and fires people have in commemoration. 04.01.2022 Prince Phillip Banner to lead Rutherglen ANZAC Day March The Royal Banner of the Corps of Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME) will lead this year’s ANZAC Day march in Rutherglen conducted by the Rutherglen RSL Sub Branch. In a rare appearance outside of major military ceremonies, the Prince Phillip Banner will be the centrepiece of the 2018 ANZAC Day march and commemorative service in this Centenary Anniversary year of the end of World War 1.... The Banner will be accompanied by an escort of 60 Army personnel and will be guarded by an armed Escort Party. The Prince Phillip Banner was presented to RAEME by His Royal Highness, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1986. It is one of the number of Royal Banners presented to the Australian Army following a tradition that began in 1904. The Banner is made of crimson silk, measures 120 x 65cm and is edged with 5cm gold braiding. Embroidered on the banner are the RAEME badge, the Duke of Edinburgh cypher and the Australian Coat of Arms. The year1986 is embroidered in the top left hand corner in gold thread to mark the year of the presentation of the Banner, conducted at Bandiana, by Prince Phillip. The Banner, pike and associated ceremonial items weigh more than 30 kilograms. The history of banners can be traced back to ancient times when a banneret was a knight who was afforded the privilege of displaying a square banner whilst in the field. When carried aloft in the battlefield banners served to identify rallying points about which troops would mass to fend off an enemy advance or to re-group and consolidate after periods of combat. Even today the long association with knights and heraldry affords a Royal Banner special religious and symbolic significance. They are carefully guarded and are at all times afforded great reverence. It cannot be touched by ungloved hands and smoking is not permitted in its’ presence. This year’s ANZAC Day march will begin in Main Street, Rutherglen, at 8.50 am. It will proceed up Main Street, turn left into High Street, right into Murray Street and proceed to the Memorial Park where the ANZAC Day Commemorative Service will be conducted. The Rutherglen RSL Sub Branch is proud to be able to host such a significant event and hopes that the local community will join in to pay tribute to the local men and women who have served our Country and remember all who paid the ultimate sacrifice in times of war and conflict.
