25.01.2022 The APY Lands recently welcomed back our friends from SA Water and KESAB environmental solutions who visited our communities to spread the word on how to make t...he most of one of the APY Lands most precious of resources. With water one of this arid region’s most valuable resources, SA Water and KESAB’s ongoing support is helping educate young Anangu about important topics such as safe drinking water and using water wisely. SA Water’s program, delivered together with KESAB, has been successfully rolled out across all schools on the APY Lands over the past six years, spreading key messages about sustainability of water and that tap water is healthy for drinking. During the most recent visit, SA Water’s education advisers Daniel Becker and Cam O’Malley, and KESAB’s environmental services manager Grace Barila and Education Officer Wendy Sutton, visited Pipalyatjara Anangu School, Fregon (Kenmore students joined Fregon students), Ernabella and Indulkana. Among the various activities were a field trip to a waterhole to undertake testing of the water (pH and turbidity); a visit to a water treatment plant and a hands-on experience learning how to fix a leaking or broken water tap thanks to Tony Burroughes, an experienced Master Plumber, from SA Water. The team also delivered two community information evenings to educate everyone on how best to look after water in community, and enjoyed a curry night in Pip and a BBQ in Ernabella. APY General Manager Richard King said the initiative was an important and valuable tool to ensure communities in the remote and arid region understood which water was safe to drink and how best to protect such a precious resource. In order to make sure there is enough water for everyone on the APY Lands, including for future generations, we must use it wisely, Mr King said. APY thanks SA Water and KESAB for helping communities protect and understand their water resources and we look forward to seeing them again next year to spread the word to future generations.

While two other bores made sure drinking water supply was maintained, we’re using the opportunity to upgrade the damaged bore to solar, enabling a more reliable supply in the event of any future power outages.
