19.01.2022 Our social media feeds are full of the good things that home isolation can bring, time to rest, time to be with others, time to read, write, playhowever it is not a good thing for many. Please keep in mind that social media displays the highlight reel of peoples lives and is not a good representation of reality. When isolation is not a good thing It is not a good thing when you are a new mum and cant seek support, encouragement or help with your new babe....Continue reading

18.01.2022 UPDATE Ruth Turnbull Psychology On Monday 6th of April Medicare released requirements for Telehealth consults for psychologists. "From 6 April 2020, it is a legislative requirement that the new telehealth services must be bulk billed for Commonwealth concession card holders, children under 16 years old and patients who are more vulnerable to COVID-19.... Health providers may apply their usual billing practices to the telehealth items for patients who do not fit the above criteria. Providers are expected to obtain informed financial consent from patients prior to providing the service; providing details regarding their fees, including any out-of-pocket costs" (see source link below) RTP is a child, adolescent and youth service that only sees people under the age of 25 and does not believe that there is a significant distinction between clients under 16 years old and clients 16 and over. Therefore it has been decided that RTP will bulk bill all eligible clients with a MHCP accessing therapy via Telehealth. This means that there are no out of pocket costs for clients with MHCP accessing therapy via Telehealth. This is a temporary measure in response to the changes everyone is experiencing during COVID-19 All clients will have received an email today outlining the changes including some changes to how my practice operates. NDIS clients and those without a MHCP will continue to be billed as normal. Mental health care is important during times of great change. I will continue to try to be as adaptable and flexible as possible so that my clients can supported during such a tricky time. Stay safe and well. 17.01.2022 A great resource from Andrew Fuller.https://theparentswebsite.com.au/how-parents-can-support-/

17.01.2022 **********WARNING********** There is a video of a man live streaming his suicide on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tik Tok. The clip is extremely graphic and ...has yet to be moderated. Should this image appear in any of your feeds SCROLL past. Please advise all older students to do the same. We strongly recommend keeping your children offline today if possible, and heavily supervise all social media interactions until this content is removed. Check with your children to determine if they have viewed this clip. They are likely to be extremely distressed. Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636 Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800

16.01.2022 Attachment theory underpins the work psychologists do with children. Each of us has our own attachment style and this style impacts significantly on how we seek support when we are distressed (I did a year long research study just on this topic ) understanding your own attachment style gives insight into our functioning in relationships, including how we parent.

16.01.2022 My speech pathologist colleague Kara Di Dio is selling some great products online which may be beneficial in these tricky times.

15.01.2022 Sunshine on a cloudy day #connection

14.01.2022 I am feeling very grateful to be able to still see my clients even if we have to do it via a screen. In these challenging times staying connected is so important. Screens havent stopped us from having a laugh, sharing thoughts, problem solving, playing games and celebrating being able to stay connected. We are one week closer to seeing the end of this strange existence we have found ourselves in. My families and kids are such great sports...they have adapted and embraced a different type of connection Happy Friday!

12.01.2022 Im so very proud of my little and big people adjusting so well to my use of a face mask this week as directed by DHHS for all health care workers. One of my lovely little guys said if it gets itchy Ruth (it was!) you can go outside and take it off so you can scratch and then come back. Ill wait Empathy in action! Another one of my gorgeous little people drew this amazing picture to remind us to always remember to keep our space which is of course proudly displayed in the waiting room. I have the best job in the world. #psychologistatwork

11.01.2022 Hi All, due to increasing anxiety being reported in the context of Covid-19 I am opening up 4 new individual client spaces for children between the ages of 8-12 who would be suited to undertaking a generalised anxiety disorder program via Telehealth. If your child is eligible for a GP Mental Health Care Plan under the Medicare items for Covid-19 these sessions will be bulk-billed (no out of pocket fees). Children who have NDIS funding may also be interested in this program. This will be short-term individual work (up to 8 sessions per child) to support children and families during the current pandemic. If you are interested please email [email protected] to express your interest and I will be in contact with you to provide further information. Please feel free to share.

10.01.2022 Thank goodness Will was found safe and sound. It has been a distressing time for parents in Australia who could relate to the family of missing Will who has autism and is non-verbal. We can all breathe a huge sigh of relief for this resilient young man and his family who will be hugging him tight right now

07.01.2022 Creativity at its best!

07.01.2022 Breathing in a focussed manner can send a direct message to the panic centre of our brain letting it know that there is no real threat. Daily practice can reduce overall anxiety. This method is suitable for adolescents and adults. I will be putting together an infographic for younger children so stay tuned!

07.01.2022 Dear friends, teachers, working-from-home parents, parents of kids who dont enjoy learning, Mums with bubs and big kids, single parents, health workers, and parents who may have struggled with their own learning....go forth, be gentle on yourself, we are all doing the best that we can. You got this and even if you dont it will be ok.

07.01.2022 October is ADHD Awareness Month. It is estimated that approximately 7.2 percent of children worldwide have ADHD, while about 3.4 percent of adults are estimate...d to have diagnosed or undiagnosed ADHD. Did you know: ADHD is an inaccurate and potentially corrosive name. The term ‘deficit disorder’ places ADHD in the realm of pathology, or disease. Individuals with ADHD do not have a disease, nor do they have a deficit of attention; in fact, what they have is an abundance of attention. The challenge is controlling it. https://www.google.com//attention-deficit-disorder-va/amp/ EDITED TO ADD: I am NEITHER a diagnostician, nor a Psychologist. I’m a Special Education Teacher with a passion for sharing information about something very commonly misunderstood. #knowledgeispower (Graphics/Comics: Dani Donovan: https://www.adhddd.com/)

06.01.2022 I received some good news in my inbox! Medicare rebates for Telehealth services will now be PERMANENT The other good news is the introduction of independent assessors for NDIS (which most allied health professionals strongly oppose as it is ANOTHER barrier to accessing treatment for those who have a disability) has been POSTPONED. This gives our professional associations the ability to raise concerns about this proposal and work towards a system that is client centered (rather than full of red tape).

05.01.2022 For all the helpers out there. Self care is a priority when you are in a caring profession. To continue to care for others it is important to meet your own care needs. I hope all of my colleagues take some time to focus on their own care after a very challenging year. Thank you to AAPI for sharing!

05.01.2022 We are watching the Covid-19 situation closely and have made some further changes in the clinic to help ensure the safety of clients attending the rooms for face to face sessions. The current protocols are: Closing the waiting room Hand sanitisation on entry ... Temperature checking Social distancing Seeing clients via telehealth if they have any symptoms of illness or have travelled to or had visitors from Greater Melbourne or the Mitchell Shire. Thorough cleaning and sanitisation between client sessions If clients are concerned about attending face to face sessions we can offer telehealth appointments and connect with you via video link. We will continue to provide psychological services to our clients in the most appropriate and safe way as we navigate our way through the pandemic. Ruth Turnbull Psychology

04.01.2022 My little people and big people joined me this week to bravely launch into the world of Telehealth and........it was unbelievably awesome! Some joined me with their doggos some with cats resting on their computers , I had some house tours and slime demonstrations. I have to admit I have been anxious about the transition but it has been hugely successful. As my little friends know...we cant worry about the what ifs we can only worry about the what is because 99.9% of the time the what ifs dont come true. I thank my families and my people, big and small for being brave, flexible and adaptable in our changing times. I feel very grateful in this time of isolation that we can stay connected and continue to do our work together #connected #psychologistatwork #telehealth #silverlinings
