24.01.2022 How great it was to have the talented Saorsa back in winning form at Pakenham on Friday, the five-year-old enjoying a drop in grade off an unlucky but good effort at Mornington last month. Due to have had a run in between, Saorsa developed a foot abscess which led to a race day scratching. But that cloud had a silver lining with the lightly raced gelding always racing well on the fresh side. Something which provides Rick with somewhat of a challenge - the Statue Of Liberty b...reed can be a bit hot and keeping them fresh can accentuate those issues, he said. And so Rick spends a fair bit of time on Saorsa, a horse who also has muscular problems, regularly treated with ultrasound. But whilst Saorsa is not the easiest horse to train, he is well worth the effort with this latest success the third of his 13 start career. And an impressive one it was too! Well supported in the betting, Saorsa was patiently steered by Jamie Kah who was having her first ride on him. Travelling nicely midfield, he weaved through the field in the straight and by the 200m he had just two in front of him. Wearing those two rivals down in determined fashion, Saorsa looked to have a bit in hand as he raced clear to win by 1 lengths. It was good to get him back in the winners circle, Rick said, adding that we were confident coming into todays race. His last run on a leader biased track was very good and he was fresh and bouncing today. We added the blinkers which let him focus and Jamies ride was pleasing. A bargain purchase at the 2016 Inglis Gold VOBIS yearling sale, Saorsa is out of the Dehere mare Madame de Here, half-sister to the WA Oaks winner Reflected Image, dam of the Gr.1 galloper Perfect Reflection. Last spring producing a colt by Thronum, Madam de Here has been well represented by seven winners and she hails from a strong black type family, its other members including the stakes winners Ideal Image, New Image, Elusive Image, Fighter Jet, Stormcat Academy and Facile Tigre.

24.01.2022 Understanding Bandaging for Support, Protection or Medical Intervention Bandaging or wrapping the lower limb of exercising horses is a popular way of providing ...protection against limb interference injuries and keep surgical sites intact and free from contamination. In some cases, bandages can provide limited support of the tendons and structural components of the lower limbs. Bandages for medical reasons can cover a variety of uses from immobilising a limb after a severe injury/fracture or acting as padded cover over a wound or even a skin condition, such as greasy heel. Most bandages consist of 2-3 layers. The inner layer is often a pad impregnated with a liniment, antibiotic or other topical dressing, the middle layer is usually a thick cotton wool or quilted wound dressing as a protective layer, and the outer layer an elastic compression wrap to help provide constant pressure on the over-wrapped area or to hold the bandage in place. This layer may also be waterproof if the bandage is applied to a limb or other injury in a horse in a paddock or outside yard. A stocking-net layer may also be used to keep the bandage in position. Whatever the function of a bandage on the lower limb, it must not be applied too tightly as it can restrict blood and lymph circulation which leads to swelling below the bandaged area and devitalised skin under the bandage. The common bandage types are: 1. Protective bandages These are usually soft padded bandages wrapped to protect the lower limbs when exercising or travelling, or a cotton polo type bandage which provides protection against abrasions and accidental limb interference. They must be thick and light weight to protect against injury but not heavy or restrictive which would affect the flight path of the limbs in an exercising horse. 2. Pressure bandages Horses can experience limb swellings, most commonly due to an infected wound but also from stocking up or tissue fluid filling the legs (soft oedema) from high protein diets or standing for long period overnight in a stable or when travelling. A carefully applied elastic pressure wrap can help prevent further tissue oedema and fluid retention when wrapped prior to the inactive period. These bandages must be elastic enough to apply pressure and conform to the limb and allow the bandage to remain in place as the swelling is dissipated over 2-3 hours or prevented from forming in the first place. If your horse experiences stocking up, contact us for a free factsheet by Dr. John Kohnke. 3. Support bandages It is impossible to support the tension on the tendons due to weight loading on the lower limbs during fast exercise, but a carefully wrapped figure 8 elastic bandage over the fetlock joint for example, can provide additional stability due to downward flexion of the loaded joints. However, all these types of bandages must be wrapped to pull the tendons to the inside of the limb the near side limb should be wrapped in a counter-clockwise rotation and off side in a clockwise direction, as illustrated in the diagram. All support bandages must be removed directly after exercise to allow the tendons to cool down and avoid possible heat damage to the internal tendon structure. If possible, the lower limbs should be cooled down after the bandages are removed with an ice wrap or hosing with cold water for 5-10 minutes. If you would like to know more about bandaging types and benefits, Dr. John Kohnke has written a comprehensive review in the Talking Dressage newsletters. 20.01.2022 A day in the life of Saorsa

20.01.2022 It was little wonder that Saorsa was so well fancied when making his debut at Bairnsdale on Sunday, the four-year-old having been so impressive winning two Cranbourne trials in the lead up, on both occasions showing plenty of speed under the guidance of Chris Symons. Giving Symons such a good feel that he was keen to be with him at debut, Saorsa drew barrier three in the 1000m dash and was able to put his natural pace to good use... "I just wanted to utilize the barrier and u...se that speed and it was good how he came back under me and relaxed." Giving a good kick into the straight, Saorsa had late challengers but just kept finding, his winning margin a comfortable 3/4 length. "You may not have been able to see it but he was still very green in the run home," Symons said, "he felt like he was all legs!" "Rick has done a great job with this horse," he continued, "he has been patient and it was great to get a result for him today." "It was a big thrill," Rick said, noting that the win was one that had "been three years in the making." Whilst Saorsa has not had any major issues, a few niggling things delayed his debut - but it was one well and truly worth waiting for! "I came here bullish about his chances." A bargain $16,500 purchase at the 2016 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale, Saorsa (Gaelic for "freedom") is a son of the recently retired Statue Of Liberty and the unraced Dehere mare Madame de Here. Catching the eye at the sales being "so strong and balanced," Saorsa has in just one start won back his purchase price!! Served last spring by Fighting Sun having produced a colt by him last September, Madame de Here is the dam of five other winners and she hails from a prolific family whose members include the stakes winners Superb Prospect (Saorsas grandam), Reflected Image, Perfect Reflection, Ideal Image, New Image, Elusive Image, Fighter Jet, Stormcat Academy and Facile Tigre. 15.01.2022 Brotherly love! Saorsa and his little brother Gus!!

15.01.2022 Purchased some time ago this lovely gelding has been broken in late and had a long break to mature. Rick made the decision not to offer him until he was mature to take the work load owners expect. Well boy did he mature, what a lovely big boy he has become. Hes just started his first prep and is ready for owners to join us to race him. Heres his details and more photos to follow on our Facebook page! Please like if you have not already Winners of the rich Magic Millions 2...Y0 Classic have proven to be terrific influences at stud, the likes of Snippets, General Nediym, Brave Warrior and Testa Rossa all doing great jobs as stallions. And it may soon be the turn of the son of the latter - Unencumbered by Testa Rossa - beginning to make his mark represented by his first debut crop winner sadly shortly after his passed away aged just six. The winner of five of his ten starts, also taking out the Gr.3 B.J McLachlan Stakes at Doomben, Unencumbered whilst being a good juvenile himself is bred to sire runners who get better at three and beyond. This colt is the first foal produced by Catastrophe who was unraced but who did go close behind multiple city winner Thomason in a Morphettville trial. Catastrophes first foal Tank Attack is well regarded by trainer Robbie Griffiths who had the two-year-old debut in the rich VOBIS Gold Sires at Caulfield recently, a race in which unfortunately he did not have a great deal of luck having trialled so well in the lead up. He followed up with a strong 4th in a 100K race before hitting the spelling paddock in preparation for a spring campaign. Served last spring by hot young stallion Deep Field, Catastrophe is by the classy Storm Cat stallion Tale Of The Cat, sire of 104 stakes winners (including ten Group One winners) and broodmare sire of another 73 stakes winners including six Group One winners. Catastrophe is a half-sister to the triple stakes winner Hoss Amor whose first foal Poetic Charmer is a lightly raced city placed winner whilst her second Meticulous - a $2.4 million yearling - is showing good promise at the trials for the Snowden stable. Her latest yearling by I Am Invincible fetched $1.05 million at this years Sydney Easter Yearling Sale. Catastrophes winning dam With Love is out of the triple Listed winner Loving Cup, grandam of stakes winner Celeris and third dam of Listed winner Royal Rumble. This is also the family of Group One winning popular young stallion Sizzling and the stakes winners Written Dash, Pittance, Laudemio, Vintage Dance, Shy Hero, Born To Fly, Fullazz, Bold Matador and recent fast finishing Rosehill Guineas winner DArgento. Currently broken in and commencing first prep. Reasonably priced to sell quickly.

09.01.2022 Thomas flying the flag for Lippy today!!

09.01.2022 With Saorsa proving a difficult horse to place - "he was caught in ratings no-man's land" joked managing part owner Jo Malloy - the decision was made recently to give the talented horse a try in another state. And so, with well respected Morphettville trainer Jon O'Connor's partner Kim being Rick's cousin, it was an easy choice to make and Saorsa headed to Adelaide a few weeks ago. Whilst Saorsa's most recent Victorian form - two lasts since a Pakenham success in July - looke...d ordinary on paper, the lightly raced six-year-old had found his fair share of trouble... but we have never doubted that he has the ability! Lining up in a 1000m BM72 contest at Morphettville last Saturday, Saorsa was double figure odds but travelled beautifully for Karl Zechner, the former South African rider who is making a good impression locally. Settling midfield, Saorsa was into the clear into the straight, gamely gathering in his rivals and getting clear late to win by half a length. "There was a bit of form in the race so it was no easy task," O'Connor said. "He was a bit hard to line up but he was doing everything right in the lead up to the race and it was a strong win." Saorsa has always caught the eye - the son of Statue Of Liberty being a particularly good looking horse and O'Connor joked that "if you watch him work and someone told you that he is a Group One sprinter you'd believe it... he has presence and style." Lightly raced due to muscular issues, Saorsa has now won four of his 16 starts. Cleverly named (Gaelic for liberty), he was a bargain buy at the 2016 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale. The winner of over $100,000, he is out of the unraced Dehere mare Madame de Here whose other six winners include the Hong Kong winner Jade Pippo. Saorsa's grandam is the imported stakes winner Superb Prospect whose eight winners include the WA Oaks heroine Reflected Image, dam of four stakes winners including the Gr.1 galloper Perfect Reflection. 05.01.2022 Saorsa so impressive today!

05.01.2022 A few new fillies joining the stable from the Melbourne Premier Sales. Stay tuned for ownership opportunities.

04.01.2022 Out fast from a wide gate, vainly trying to chase a hot speed before being eased back, ending up second last close to the rails, a little green as the two leaders shot clear turning... not the usual run of a winner, but then Saorsa is no average horse! Having his first run since the spring and just his third overall, the exciting four-year-old created a big impression at Cranbourne on Friday night, overcoming the odds to charge home to a soft one length victory in the BM64 10...00m contest. Whilst the ride did not look pretty Chris Symons knew exactly what he was going having been aboard the gelding at his first two starts and at each of his trials - including an impressive victory over 800m at Cranbourne a couple of weeks ago. On that occasion Symons took the opportunity to teach Saorsa - who had led throughout at debut - to settle and, after enjoying over in running, he showed a good turn of foot. "That trial was a bit of an experiment," Rick Harrison said, "and when I went back and compared the time to his first trial I saw that he had improved two seconds so I told Chris that we may be on to something!" Which is why Symons was happy to ease Saorsa back despite his quick start, though he admitted to giving brief thought to leading - "it was always going to be tricky from the gate but he jumped brilliantly and I was tempted to go forward. But the pressure was up inside me so I thought Id just take a sit on him." "And what I loved is that he came right back underneath me, we were able to get that bit of cover and he showed an explosive turn of foot." After his debut run, Saorsa was out of the placings 11 days later and Harrison is wary that his runs need to be spaced - "we put that failure down to backing up too quickly He runs on a lot of nervous energy and needs to be mad fresh." "And he overheats after each run, he struggles with his core temperature. So we decided to put him in the paddock - he couldve been back for the summer but we decided to keep him out a bit longer and wait until the weather cooled off." And that time has done Saorsa wonders - "he has really matured and grown up mentally. And as he gets older he is only going to get better as he learns that it is not such a big deal to be a racehorse," he laughed as he noted that the Statue Of Liberty breed "can be a bit hot." "A lovely horse to have around," Saorsa was a bargain $16,500 purchase at the 2016 Inglis VOBIS Gold Yearling Sale. Bred locally by Highpoint Lodge, he is one of seven winners for the unraced Dehere mare Madame de Here whose Fighting Sun yearling colt we recently picked up at the Inglis Premier. Served last spring by Thronum, Madame de Here is a daughter of the US stakes winner Superb Prospect whose Gr.2 WA Oaks winning daughter Reflected Image has produced four stakes winners including the Gr.1 Kingston Town Classic winner Perfect Reflection. 03.01.2022 Tell me, what do you do for a day job? All in a days work!

02.01.2022 Just something about a Thoroughbred

02.01.2022 Not too many horses win over 90 times their purchase price but that is just what the gutsy Byalip has done, at Mornington on Wednesday recording his second soft victory, taking his earnings to beyond $63,000. A good effort for a horse who was purchased as a yearling by managing owner Frank Gibbs for just $700 online from bloodstockauction.com. "He wanted to buy a staying type and give him time and Byalip - a son of Kempinsky and the Street Cry mare Street Glances fit the bill... - cheaply too! It was not smooth sailing at first, Byalip suffering from a bout of colic that required surgery. Plus he faces the every day challenges of a (hence his name) parrot mouth -"I have never come across one like it," Rick said. So severe is his condition that he has worn down his front teeth down to nothing; fortunately he is still a good eater! Expectations were not high for such a cheap horse by an unfashionable stallion (Byalip one of only three members of Kempinsky's 2013 crop) but from day one there was something there. "I remember having my first ride on him," Rick said, "and going into the house and telling Jo to 'ring Frank and tell him he has not wasted his money!'" "He has such great movement, an awesome stride." But some education and patience was required, Byalip included to dawdle at the start and come on and off the bit - habits that have proven costly. And so last start Rick asked Noel Callow, who has having his first ride on the horse, to be proactive early - "I said that I didn't care if he over-raced for the first couple of furlongs, so long as he could get him going." A game second that day, Byalip did everything right at his second run for Callow who reported that the addition of blinkers has seen encouraging improvement. "He rode him with a lot of confidence which I really think helped the horse," Rick said. For what he lacks in teeth Byalip makes up for with his ability, talent evidenced by the ease of his win in the Class 1 2025m contest. Enjoying a lovely rails trail off pace for Noel Callow, the chestnut was always travelling well and just needed a bit of luck coming to the turn. Which he got and he was soon in the lead, drawing clear to win by 1 1/4 lengths. On course was part owner Robyn Knorr and friend Carolyn Harris whom Robyn , pre covid, never missed one of her horses running. After a couple of owners dropped out of Byalip early, Rick was happy to pass on a free share to Carolyn and a few other owners who have been such great supporters of the stable. See more
