22.01.2022 DIABETES WEEK Do you or does someone you know have newly diagnosed diabetes??? ... It is a great idea to visit us at any of our clinics to have a thorough diabetic foot assessment, which also includes individualised foot education to prevent future complications. We can create a management plan for the longevity of your diabetic foot. We not only go through neurological and vascular testing but also discuss your personal history and habits to find a management plan that will best suit your needs. It is also ideal to establish a baseline reading of neurovascular health to then look back on at your annual/bi-annual/other check up. It will help us detect early stages in neurovascular deficits to enable early interventions or referrals. We have the best, up-to-date instruments for the job! Following amptutation prevention guidelines, we will ensure you and your feet are well looked after! Encourage your friends with any foot problems or health conditions that may affect their feet to get on top of it early! After all, you won't get very far without them!

20.01.2022 Pregnancy can affect your feet! There are many changes to your body whilst pregnant and one of them can on the feet! Due to the natural weight gain of pregnancy a women’s centre of gravity is altered. This causes a new weight bearing stance and added pressure to the knees and feet. Leg cramps, pain in the heels or arches of the feet and swelling are common complaints in pregnancy. Our podiatrists can not only help care for your feet with our medical pedicures when you can’t r...each your toes.with instruments that are properly sterilised (no cross infections like in nail bars) but we can also assess to see if you need more support throughout your pregnancy to prevent and relive pain. The affects of pregnancy can last some time after and often change women’s feet permanently so post natal podiatry visits can be worthwhile also #mumlife #wecare #selfcare @ryanjamespodiatry See more

17.01.2022 Elisha is demonstrating windwass mechanism. This is when you extend the big toe which tightens the medial band of the planta fascia and this raises the medial longitudinal arch. This can be useful information when we are completing a bio mechanical assessment when planning custom orthotics. Failure of the arch to raise may indicate a hallux rigidus deformity or a ruptured spring ligament complex. Biomechanical assessment @ryanjamespodiatry #podiatry #movement #orthotics

17.01.2022 Ive got two images here of the same foot. This is to demonstrate that the position of bunion deformities can be exaggerated with flat feet. There is a Cochrane systematic review showing that foot orthotics help reduce bunion pain. Here you can see how they can be partially corrected in a neutral position which will reduce mechanical stress to the joint and surrounding structures. It won’t fix bunions but will alleviate the pain exacerbated by mechanical stress #footbiomechanics #customorthotics #podiatry @ryanjamespodiatry @ Port Macquarie, New South Wales

15.01.2022 Would you feel the prickles of this little guy underfoot? Okay so it’s not likely you are going to step on this cute prickly creature but something to think about. Peripheral neuropathy can lead to not being able to feel sharp objects underfoot and can lead to trauma, ulcers and the complications associated with this. There are a few medical conditions which cause peripheral neuropathy. In our clinic we believe prevention is better than cure and will undertake qualitative testing for patients at risk of peripheral neuropathy. Testing for this is a part of our regular diabetic foot checks also. If you have a loved one with diabetes podiatry should be part of their management plan

14.01.2022 Ever wondered about the thickened skin under or around your feet or toes? Callouses or "Hyperkeratoses are a common cause of foot pain due to the release of inflammatory mediators, which can have an impact on the mobility and independence of people suffering from them." "Hyperkeratosis is dened as a thickening of the stratum corneum of the epidermis caused by hypertrophy or hyperplasia of its cells." "Its onset is attributable to the combined application of friction and p...ressure loads, which cause microtrauma in the skin... Hyperkeratoses are usually located on bony prominences, on joint deformities and on zones that rub against shoes." What should you do about this? See one of our professionals if you have enquiries about your feet; as this particular skin condition has close correlations to debilitating conditions such as pressure ulcers and antalgic gait leading to joint destruction. Debridement in our clinic is the gentle and pain-free removal of this hyperplastic/hypertrophied stratum corneum of your epidermal layer. It is done in-chair and is over within minutes, leaving your skin fresh, soft and pain-free. "Plantar hyperkeratosis debridement appear(s) to reduce peak maximum force and peak plantar pressure." "Data suggests that debridement of plantar hyperkeratosis may lead to a reduction in pain." Araguas Garcia, C., & Corbi Soler, F. (2018). Effect of debridement of plantar hyperkeratoses on gait in older people An exploratory trial. Archives Of Gerontology And Geriatrics, 78, 7-13. doi: 10.1016/j.archger.2018.05.017
