22.01.2022 What this photo doesn't show is 2 months of planning, hours spent checking weather reports and clear sky charts, multiple cancelled trips, a full day at work before a 7 hour drive into the middle of nowhere and a stay in a motel. Then to get 84 shots and whittle them down to 3. All that, for 3 shots. First shot was this one, took a while but I decided it looked better with the Milky way cutting in between the 2 sections of trees. The first image is the unedited shot, 2nd is a... semi-realistic edit and 3rd is just, because, well it looked cool. 12.01.2022 Recent shot from the 12 Apostles (before they were temporarily closed). If you're wondering how to get this kind of shot here's a few tips. Please see the expertly edited 2nd picture for illustrations. 1. Decide what the focus of the shot is, in this case it's the centre of the image (shown inside the red box).... 2. Create some framing, obviously in a natural situation like this it can be harder, but it doesn't have to be perfect, see the yellow lines for an example of how the cliffs around the scene direct your attention towards the middle. 3. Make the outside corners of the image darker, also known as adding vignetting (see green lines), this directs attention away from the corners and again into the subject area. This can be done in so many different ways, using different angles, physical objects, editing techniques such as vignetting etc etc. This works for the same reason your iPhone has portrait mode, it blurs out the background to focus your attention on what it wants you to see, the subject. Obviously for landscape shots like this, portrait shooting won't work, but you can use these tips to make your shot a bit better than average.
12.01.2022 Had the pleasure of shooting Greg's awesome HSV - Holden Special Vehicles Clubsport R8 this weekend. I wish the pictures could convey the sound of this thing!
05.01.2022 A few architecture shots from Melbourne and Sydney (back when we were allowed to go out). I like to look for symmetry in these kinds of shots, one way to exaggerate symmetry is to shoot from different angles other than eye level. This is especially effective with a wide angle lens. You can also shoot from different angles to add emotion to shots. In the 1st shot of Flinders Street Station for example, as one of Melbourne's most architecturally significant buildings, I wante...d to add a feeling of significance to the shot. To do this, I shot from ground level, looking up at the station.
