23.01.2022 John Wren (1871-1953) was born in Collingwood of Irish Catholic immigrants. He left school at the age of 12 and during his teenage years supplemented his 7/6 (75 cents) weekly wage by small time gambling enterprises. At 21, Wren set up a totalisator in Johnston Street Collingwood funded by his winnings from Carbine’s 1890 Melbourne Cup victory and other successful betting plunges. The ‘tote’ earned him considerable income due to its popularity in a section of society which di...sliked the police, and other extensions of establishment authority, yet loved to bet. He became a wealthy man with significant political influence and expanded his business interests into horse racing, gambling, cinemas, gold mining, newspapers and professional cycling. Best known as a boxing promoter, Wren acquired venues in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Through Stadiums Limited he dominated, and largely controlled, the sport in the eastern states of Australia. Wren died of a heart attack shortly after watching his beloved Collingwood win the 1953 VFL grand final. Extract from "Sport in Victoria - A History".
