10.03.2022 It's funny when you look back on things you used to believe were true.. Free weights are always superior to machines: Whilst free weights are fantastic, machines are awesome to target specific muscles with extra safety.... Fasted cardio is superior for fat loss: "Doing cardio in a fasted state, burns fat because there's no food in your stomach" I can see why that sounded sensible, but it's just not true. Being sore means you've had a good session: I used to actually get mad if I wasn't sore after a training session Muscle soreness really is irrelevant in determining the quality of a session. You can make any muscle sore - just do new exercises or a tonne of volume. You have to squat, bench and deadlift to get good gains: I always believed you had to include these 3 barbell movements if you wanted to increase muscle mass. In reality, there's a plethora of other options that are equally or more effective and your program should be adapted to suit your individual mechanics and goals. You should take every set to failure: I'd always go to the gym and take every set to complete failure, using forced reps, drop sets etc. There's nothing wrong with these overload techniques, but they should not be used every exercise, set, session. The overall summary here is simple - don't be close minded in your beliefs. More studies and more information will be available as the years go on. 05.03.2022 Can you progress in the gym without a program or plan? I guess you could, but if you aren't following a program or plan, how would you know if you are actually progressing or not? I would say people who are new to the gym, could see some progress without following a set plan.... If you are going into the gym and doing random exercises, sets, reps and rest times - you aren't giving yourself any data to be able to determine if you are progressing, except for how you look. I have definitely seen some people get some really good gains without following a plan, but I would say that their gains would be further enhanced if they were to follow a plan. Progressing in the gym is more then just body composition and how you look. I've touched mainly on strength but it works the same for cardio. Going into the gym and doing random "cardio" workouts purely to see how many calories you can burn on an inaccurate fitness watch, doesn't help you track progression either. You can go in and pick 10 exercises that will elevate your heart rate the most, perform them at a fast pace, like a bat out of hell and you will get a high reading on your watch. This isn't a sales pitch, I'm not trying to sell programs. 02.03.2022 I don't know who needs to hear this... Squatting is not bad for your knees. That doesn't mean everyone needs to throw a barbell on their back and squat.... We have an abundance of squat variations available to us and I just listed 8 of them in a couple or seconds. Find a variation that works for you! 20.02.2022 I get asked this question all the time. Unfortunately, the answer is not always what people want to hear. Whilst I personally like to follow a balanced approach of just making sure I hit my macros and calories (IIFYM) where I don't eliminate any particular food or food group from my diet, others may prefer a different approach.... Basically, there isn't one dirt approach that is superior to another. 16.02.2022 Have you tried full body training? Here's a little example as to why full body training can be more beneficial then your typical bro split: You've planned out a "chest day" with 4 exercises and for arguments sake each exercise is 4 sets of 10 reps.... Exercise 1 is bench press and you're fresh so this exercise is probably your best for the day at say 8/10 in terms of quality. Exercise 2 is incline dumbbell press and now you're already fatigued from bench press, so the quality is closer to 6-7/10. By the time you hit exercise 3, your chest is fried, it's had enough and the quality of the reps continue to diminish further as you go on. You see where I'm going with this? Then you wait a full week before you train your chest again. If you programmed this in a full body program, you could still hit those same 4 exercises across the course of the week. But now by only doing 1 exercise each session, all 4 exercises are performed at a higher standard. Not only that, but you are recovery at a much faster rate and you're hitting that muscle more frequently. #ryefitpt #ryefitsquad #lift #gains #muscle #strength #health #fit #fitness #exercise

16.01.2022 Fitness Tip Friday My favourite overload technique: 1 and 1/4 reps This example is a squat, but you can use it for a multitude of exercises. Put simply, you lower yourself down into your maximal squat depth, come a quarter of the way up, then lower yourself back down to your maximal depth, before coming all the way back up to the starting position.... Rinse and repeat. Bonus tip: If your squat depth sucks, you could have crappy ankle mobility. Aside from releasing the calves and doing some ankle mobility work, you can slap some plates under your heels to increase range of motion. 15.01.2022 "I'm in a calorie deficit, why aren't I losing weight?" Well.. Are you actually in a calorie deficit? ... Have you? Overestimated your daily energy output. You actually aren't burning as many calories as you think and therefor have not created a negative energy balance. Inaccurately calculated your maintenance calories. If you're a couple of hundred calories off, what you thought was a deficit, might actually be the calories you require to maintain your current weight. Exceed your weekly calorie budget with a binge on the weekend. Monday-Friday you have a daily calorie deficit of 200 calories = 1000 calories over the course of 5 days. Saturday-Sunday you have a daily calorie surplus of 1000 calories (which is easy to do) that leaves your weekly budget 1000 calories over. Created a calorie leak by not accurately tracking sauces and condiments. 20ml of BBQ sauce tracked is a big difference between 60ml untracked. It all adds up! OR... You are lifting weights a few times per week, progressively overloading and eating adequate protein and your body is going through a recomposition phase. This where you are able to gain lean muscle muscle and lose body fat at the same time. 02.01.2022 The NSW Department of Health have announced new restrictions due to an increase in cases of Coronavirus across NSW. One of these restrictions is that gyms are only permitted to be open when they are staffed. This means that we are currently not able to trade 24 hours a day. To minimise any inconvenience, we have extended our staffed hours until we are able to return to 24 hour trading. This means our temporary opening hours are:... 5am to 10pm Mon-Thurs 5am to 8pm Friday 9am to 6pm Saturday 10am to 2pm Sunday This restriction will have a significant impact on our wage costs following what has been a challenging 4 months for us. We are doing everything we can to manage this situation and we do appreciate your understanding at this time. Please continue to do your part by adhering to our cleaning and hygiene protocols when you are at the gym. These include; Washing your hands and using hand sanitizer before and after you train. Using a towel on all equipment. Wiping down the equipment after use. Practising social distancing. If you are not feeling well, do not come to the gym. Please also remember to bring and individually scan your access card. Under no circumstances will you be permitted access without your own access card. We will not be taking any casual visits or free trials during this time. Thank you!
02.01.2022 I’m in a calorie deficit, but I can’t lose weight Firstly - Yes, there could be other underlying factors in play. But, are you certain you’re actually in a deficit? 1 Do you weigh your food? The difference between 200g and 250g doesn’t sound like much, but in terms of calories, it can play a major role.... For example: 200g of chicken breast has 220kcal and 250g has 275kcal. If you do this 7 days a week that’s extra 385kcal across the week that are unaccounted for. 2 Do you accurately track spreads and butters? My 1 tablespoon of peanut butter can look vastly different to the next persons and the calories can accumulate very quickly. 3 Do you accurately track sauces and condiments? Again, a dash of oil and a splash of sauce in your cooking can produce a multitude of differing calories, depending on what someone considers a dash and a splash. 4 Do you accurately track your beverages? As said above, 1 cup is not accurate measurement. My cup may be double the size of yours, but we’ve logged the same amount of calories. In summary, if you don’t want to track, that’s cool. But, you can’t then claim you’re in a calorie deficit, as you truely don’t know.
