19.01.2022 Scammer/byb avoidance. Puppy buyers, the ANKC now has introduced an online tool where you can type in name or number of a breeder and search if they are registered. This will stop people claiming to be a breeder with the ANKC, also they are byb or scammers. However please do your due diligence if there is an offer to good to be true and then after confirming that the kennel is legit, search for the kennel online and call them with that number (in case someone uses a real breeders prefix or number fraudulently). http://ankc.org.au/ Scroll down for the tool.

11.01.2022 THINGS TO BE WARY OF WHEN PURCHASING A PUPPY 1. Phoney ANKC (Australian National Kennel Council) membership number in the adverts. This is becoming common practise among some back yard breeders so it is best to check the number with the relevant Canine Council, (e.g., Dogs NSW, Dogs Vic, Dogs QLD, etc.) to ensure that the number is authentic. You could also ask to sight the breeders ANKC membership card. 2. Be aware that any adverts stating a member number registered with AAP...BT is NOT the ANKC. 3. Any breeder who states that there is no need to have the parents of their puppies HD or ED scored or tested for JLPP is not knowledgeable in the breed and is irresponsible. 4. Do not purchase a puppy whose parent or parents are long coats. This is a disqualifying fault and is not to be used in a breeding programme. 5. Any breeder who states that the parents are pedigree but they are not selling their puppies with papers is either a registered breeder who is breaking the Code of Ethics or not a registered breeder. 6. Pedigree papers should be provided at time of sale. However in some instances pedigrees can take a while for the breeder to receive them. If this is the case, have the breeder sign to say that the pedigree papers will be forwarded to you. 7. In Australia there are two types of pedigree registration, main and limited. Limited registry pedigree papers restrict the dog from showing or breeding. Main registry pedigree papers allow you to show your dog and (if the dog is suitable) you could breed with the dog. Only puppies from main register pedigree puppies can have pedigree papers. 8. Make sure that the breeder has signed the back of the pedigree over to you. 9. Do not meet the breeder somewhere. Make an appointment to go to the breeders home. 10. A breeder who allows their puppies to go to homes before they are 8 weeks of age. This is against the Code of Ethics. 11. Ensure that the puppies and adult dogs appear to be in good health and interact with the breeder happily. Val Leigh (long time breeder) See more

08.01.2022 Why Purchase a Pedigree Papered Puppy? 1. The majority of responsible registered breeders screen parents for hereditary diseases, thus reducing the likelihood of inheritance in their puppies. In Australia breeding partners should be screened for: HD; ED; JLPP and have eye certification stating that they are clear of entropian, ectropian and have similar eye colour. Mouth certification should also be done certifying full dentition and scissor bite. HD screening is compulsory b...efore a litter can be registered with the ANKC. There may be additional screenings done, and will vary from country to country. 2. Lineage of pedigree puppies can be traced back for generations as opposed to non-papered puppies, (which may not be purebred), as they have an unknown heritage. Although the parents may look like a purebred there is no guarantee that their ancestors were! 3. A pedigree gives a good indication that, as an adult, your dog will display the breed traits. i.e.: appearance, character and temperament. Whereas this may not be the case with a non-papered puppy when it reaches maturity. In fact it may look nothing like a Rottweiler when it matures. 4. Information and guidance regarding how to care for your puppy is more readily available from registered breeders. 5. Purchasing from a responsible, registered breeder, stands you in good stead of taking home a puppy that will enjoy a long, happy & healthy life. Val Leigh (long time breeder) See more
