06.01.2022 Happy Australia Day! On this day in 1949, we all became Australian citizens. EVERYONE! The Nationality and Citizen Act passed by our federal parliament in 1948 ...came into existence on the 26th of January 1949 and gave everyone the right to live united and protected by Australian law. The Nationality and Citizenship Act, was an important and significant piece of legislation which redressed years of inequality where Aborigines at suffered grave injustice under British Imperialism. It created the 'oneness' which we now celebrate in the changing of the word 'young' to 'one' in our national anthem. We now move forward and together as a nation in celebrating the date of the 26th of January, 1949 when the Australian identity was born. From this day we ALL could travel under an Australian Passport. We were no longer to be called British subjects, compelled to fight in foreign wars, and travel under British passports. For the first time since Cook's landing Aboriginal and Torres Straight Island people had full rights and protections under the law. Australia Day is not the day Captain James Cook landed on these fair shores. Cook landed on the 28th of April, 1770. Australia Day is also not the day the First Fleet arrived in Botany Bay. That date was the 18th of January NOT the 26th. Historic events such as these are important to understand and remember as all history must be embraced and understood. To call Australia Day which we celebrate on January 26th, an Invasion Day, has no basis in truth or fact Citizenship Ceremonies are held by Local Councils on Australia Day and are particularly poignant and meaningful when held on the date of January 26th. As an immigrant to Australia, the historic events which took place on January 26th, 1949 are meaningful to me, as my ability to become part of this great country is as a direct consequence of what happened on that day. On this day freedom and a common national identity came to all people of his great nation. We could now call ourselves Australians not 'British subjects', united as one nation and free to determine our own destiny. "We are one, but we are many, and from all the lands on earth we come. We'll share a dream and sing with one voice. I am, you are, we are Australian." (Lyrics - I am Australian)
