25.01.2022 STORM DAMAGE ! Our recent wild weather has caused a lot of damage locally. Here we can see the gyprock has cracked. On closer inspection, the wild winds were strong enough to remove roofing tiles, and then hail had pierced the underlying sarking. This created water damage and the gyprock to give way. ... 21.01.2022 GENERAL WELDING. If you remember this sinking staircase from a few posts ago, the handrail was horizontal, straight across the brick. Used the old railing material for design consistency, just reshaped and formed to fit as an angled handrail.

21.01.2022 CORRECTING STRUCTURAL DEFECTS The before work seen here was done by another tradesperson. - The pergola rafters were not fixed correctly, they only had nails hastily skewed into the wall plate. The nails were not even galvanised. The eventual nail rust, along with the lack of structural support would have caused the pergola to collapse without much warning at all. The after work with me - I have fixed the joist hangers correctly, to ensure that structural support is given... to the rafters (all galvanised fixings). Seemingly small difference, but peace of mind in terms of structural safety is priceless.

21.01.2022 STRUCTURAL SAFETY UPDATE Progress pics, as promised.. The first pic is the 'before', where you can see those posts have been simply nailed onto the top of the deck. ... The second pic is the 'after'. Here, I've replaced the posts with new timber and they have been bolted to the subfloor structure. You can also see I've needed to replace some of the pine decking, as the decking boards here were beginning to lift and warp from not being secured correctly in the first place. Slowly getting things up to National Construction Code standards

20.01.2022 NEW ADVENTURES ! Thought Id share a snap from my recent trip to the Gold Coast as I take up a position as a TRAINER for carpentry apprentices. Those who know me, know that I have a number of things that Im most passionate about in life, and this combines 2 of those - CARPENTRY + EDUCATION. Im so excited for this opportunity to work with Construction Training Institute - RTO 31449 to help teach and mentor our next gen carpentry workforce across Western Sydney. ... Of course, Ill still be doing my carpentry on weekends, because.. well, I can help myself and I love being out there in the community, meeting people and lending a hand. Construction Training Institute - RTO 31449 is based on the Gold Coast, and here I am on my 2 day training and orientation. The next week to follow will be on the job training, visiting the new apprentices Ill be taking on.

The post should be at least fixed to the subfloor framing (the structure underneath the surface of a deck, involving a supporting network of bearers and joists).... She was so excited to mention what I do as a carpenter as one of the many people in our community who helps others. It's not one of the obvious service-professions, or particularly glamorous, but I'm chuffed that she would consider what I do as having qualities which she aspires towards and can be proud of. I keep this in mind when someone asks me for jobs such as these, where I'm installing support aids, which ultimately help people in their day-to-day functioning. Used a stud finder to make sure this support rail was installed properly and securely, in order to support full human weight. That way, safety is no longer a concern.

Originally, the posts were offset from the centre of the concrete, and the edges had cracked, which allowed for movement and created that lean. I dug new holes in line with the Builder's Code of Australia (BCA), which were deeper and wider to ensure that gate stability will not be an issue for many years to come

09.01.2022 So happy to have been part of this job for a family doing a reno on their forever home . A few things needed to be done. One of the doors was scraping after flooring had been installed. Planed the bottom, reinstalled and no more scraping . Linen cupboard door removed, as client wanted the door handle and latch changed to a door knob and catch . The last couple of photos you can see are geometric shaped door handles which were previously installed askew. That won't do - so I straightened them up, and avoided a complete re-drilling of holes or complete door replacement . Small things can make such a difference in your day-to-day living. When it comes to your house, your home...you want it done right.

08.01.2022 REPAIR OF UNSTABLE STAIRS Looks can be deceiving. At first glance, these stairs look as thought there is nothing wrong with them.... The structural posts for these stairs were not concreted into the ground. One of the posts were dangling - it was nailed into the subfloor above it that it was meant to be supporting (?!). Another of the posts was just sitting on top of blocks of timber. Stay tuned for updates on their repair
