22.01.2022 Wonderful Wednesday // with Kathy Dyer Our WONDERFUL flute specialist, Kathy Dyer, is proof that growing up in households that appreciate music can inspire children to pursue music careers and provide foundations for strong familial bonds. An integral member of the Music Department, Kathy not only takes private tuition; she also teaches as part of the Primary Immersion program and in the Secondary music classrooms. While not from a musical family, Kathy’s parents were suppor...tive of her interests and records by famous flautist, James Galway played on repeat in her home. Perhaps it was the classical stylings of Galway playing in the background of important family moments that led Kathy to know from a young age it was the flute she wanted to master! 21.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY// with Marybeth Harvey ENCOURAGE and inspire - two powerful words lived and breathed by vocal teacher Marybeth Harvey, our pick for Wonderful Wednesday this week. New to the College this year, Marybeth has sung, danced and acted her way through life to bring a wealth of teaching and performing experiences to her growing numbers of students here at St Andrew’s. Beginning with learning piano and not long after singing, Marybeth’s desire to express herself t...hrough music extended to learning the flute, dance lessons, and speech & drama by the age of 10. The Annual Cairns & District Junior Eisteddfod was filled with entries by Marybeth Harvey across all disciplines, year after year! Keep reading about Marybeth on our website here: https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-marybeth-

21.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // Annie Jackson Annie Jackson followed in the footsteps of both her mother and father when she made music her career. She still refers to her Dad as her greatest musical influence, growing up attending his gigs and listening to the songs of Glenn Miller and Acker Bilk. Annie began learning piano at the age of eight and is now a multi-instrumentalist specialising in clarinet and saxophone. When asked what the highlights of her career were, it was evident f...rom the smile on her face that Annie holds many happy memories over her years of playing; including a celebratory performance in Circular Quay once Sydney was announced as Olympic hosts for the year 2000. Annie aims to teach children how to note and rhythm read, to find the joy in what they do and to take on every opportunity without fear. 21.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // with Chris Clarke The band Queen have inspired countless musicians around the globe and Brian May was instrumental in motivating a young Chris Clarke to take up guitar. He enrolled in lessons at a Classical Guitar Centre and became spellbound by the lyrical beauty of the repertoire and fascinated with the relative complexity of technique required to perform such pieces. 21.01.2022 Flashback Friday today looks back at the 2017 Sydney Music Tour, when the Symphonic Band and Jazz Orchestra travelled to Sydney to participate in the Australian International Music Festival. The students were fortunate to have workshops with world renowned guest clinicians, share an exchange rehearsal with a concert band from New Zealand, watch a variety of cultural performances by ensembles from all across the world and perform at incredible venues including Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium, the Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour and of course the iconic Concert Hall at the Sydney Opera House. An incredible musical opportunity for these students and staff and many amazing memories made on this trip.

20.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // After growing up in England, touring Argentina and working on the open seas, we are so fortunate that viola and violin specialist Simon Eastwood has found his way to the Sunshine Coast and joined the Co-Curricular team at St Andrew’s. Simon has always loved music, spending his youth working to be able to pay for his own lessons on the violin. After also dabbling with drums and oboe, it was the deeper, more mellow tone of the viola at age seventeen, th...at quickly became his focus instrument. After a number of years teaching classroom music in London, the lure of performing with his own band on a cruise ship became an exciting option and growing up with influences such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Harry Connick Jr, Simon still loves to get on the mic and sing with a Big Band. Read more about Simon on our website https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-simon-eas

18.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY // Another victim of Covid-19, unfortunately ASMF2020 was cancelled this year. A favorite on the College calendar, the Anglican Schools Music Festival is one of the only events that brings together students and staff from Anglican Schools in the Diocese of Brisbane with a 1-day celebration of Music and Anglican schooling. Started back in 2014, the event, which runs every second year, was to be the 4th and was shaping up to be the biggest ever. Enjoy some of the memories from previous events below. #MakingMusicTogether #AnglicanSchools #ASMF

15.01.2022 Our Music students have really missed the opportunity to make music together in rehearsals each week whilst we have been learning online. However, the students have enjoyed engaging with one another and the music staff through weekly online rehearsals and have continued developing their skills through personal practice and using online platforms such as Smartmusic to support them in learning new ensemble repertoire and rehearsing existing repertoire. During this time, members... of the Wind Ensemble have put together a virtual ensemble recording of one of their favourite pieces from past years, Scorpion. The students worked hard individually to learn their parts and perform to a recording and click track, whilst also learning new technology skills through the recording process. It was fantastic to see some of our Percussion students who don’t have access to all of the instruments they needed at home, get creative with items from around the house to replicate their instrument sounds. Please enjoy our Wind Ensemble students making music together again! See more

15.01.2022 Last term our Wind Ensemble students were unable to rehearse together as a whole group due to Covid-19 safety measures, so instead the students embarked on a recording project with support of the College AV Department. Across the final 4 weeks of term the students attended small sectional rehearsals to film and record their parts. This was a very new and different experience for our students who had to focus on performing their parts with a high degree of accuracy, listen intently and play together with their other section members and focus closely on the conductor to ensure they were playing strictly in time. A huge thank you to Mr Joel Tomkins and Ben McCormack for their time in filming, recording and editting this project. We are thrilled to share with you one of the finished pieces, Treasure arranged by Victor Lopez.

13.01.2022 Flashback Friday today revisits the 2018 Primary Music Tour to Hervey Bay and Fraser Island. The students enjoyed workshopping with fellow musicians from Fraser Coast Anglican College, performing at Fraser Shores Retirement Village and Bayside Christian College and the highlight of the tour, travelling to Fraser Island for a performance at the Kingfisher Bay Resort! The students made many memories on this trip, including our Year 6 boys who entertained their friends by playing their Band piece Scorpion on the bus ride up to Hervey Bay!

12.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY // When the Music Department is up an running normally, rehearsal days are scheduled to ensure the ensembles have prepared enough repertoire for the various events and competitions they are called to take part in. These days are always a great opportunity to get to know each other, focus on the teamwork required to make Music and continue to build individual and group musicianship skills. Enjoy some of the memories from previous rehearsal days below. #MakingMusicTogether #Teamwork #Friendship

12.01.2022 Jason Connors says that we have an astute past teacher to thank for recognising his innate sense of rhythm and steering him towards specialising in percussion and thank her, we do! Jason is an energetic and experienced percussion tutor who teaches private lessons as well as conducts two Percussion Ensembles here at St Andrew’s. He grew up surrounded by music, with a pianist grandmother, father who played guitar and older brother and sister serving as inspirations to learn t...he piano; an instrument he played all through his school years. 11.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // with Trish Couper Vocal specialist, Trish Couper, has spent the past decade helping the students of St Andrew’s find their voice. Starting out as a child who could not stop singing to her pets, she spent her school years seeking out opportunities to perform in musicals and at local cafes. From then, Trish lived a colourful life on the road performing on stages across the country (and crocodile farms in Darwin!) as well as with prominent artists in the ...70s such as Debbie Byrne, 80’s and 90’s supporting INXS and ‘Barnsey’. Read more about Trish on our website https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-trish-cou

11.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // Neil Heymink It is no surprise that Neil Heymink, our Double Reed specialist, gravitated towards teaching as he cites the sharing of music with like-minded souls as one of the highlights of his musical career. Supportive parents and the appeal of the bassoon and the oboe’s unique history and distinctive voice, encouraged Neil to develop a deep love and respect for music. Neil’s fondest memories as a young musician with the Queensland Youth Orchestra inc...lude playing dramatic orchestral repertoire such as Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony, Saint-Saens Danse Macabre and Borodin’s Prince Igor. In complete contrast, Neil is also a a big fan of atmospheric 80's pop including bands such as Icehouse. Such eclectic tastes and his experience as a performing musician, Neil’s advice to students is to listen widely to different styles of music, consider singing in the choir, learn some piano and using ear-training apps to help develop general musicianship. 10.01.2022 As with many events this year, the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod for 2020 looked quite different. The wonderful showcase of Music, Speech and Drama, rang over two weekends from the 31 July to 9 August, but performances were restricted to soloists, duos, trios and quartets. Congratulations to all our students who performed. We acknowledge your hard work, your ability to overcome fear under pressure, your graciousness in achieving well and your ability to cope with disappointment, your encouragement and kindness towards others and above all, your bravery in taking on challenge and difficulty to be your best self. Well done! See the results on our website: https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//eisteddfod-2020-%E2%80%93-cel

09.01.2022 Wonderful Wednesday // with Graham Bishop What makes a qualified engineer give it all away to pursue music? For Graham Bishop, one of our Piano Tutor’s at St Andrew’s, the passion for performing, composing and creating a career in music, far outweighed sitting in an office. Graham began learning the piano on the same instrument his beloved Grandmother played. Impressed by her skills as a pianist, it was his reason for choosing to learn the piano and so began the desire to be ...the best he could be. Keep reading about Graham here: https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-graham-bi

08.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // Each week we will be introducing you to one of our amazing Music Specialists here at the College. We begin with Bass teacher Lisa Dowling. Lisa joined our team at the beginning of this year bringing with her a wealth of performing and creative experiences stretching from Melbourne to New York and Paris. Lisa’s musical journey began with piano and violin lessons in primary school. Her teacher, Brisbane based string teacher Loreta Fin, was instrumental i...n building Lisa’s resilience and confidence, and recognised her potential as a musician. It was also Loretta who introduced her to the Double Bass. On completing her schooling, Lisa attended the QLD Conservatorium of Music before heading to Melbourne’s Victorian College of the Arts. Wanting to explore beyond the shores of Australia, Lisa gained a Scholarship to Stony Brook University in New York to complete her Bachelor of Arts. She then moved to Paris for further study in Historical Performance Practice, before returning to New York to complete a Masters in Contemporary Performance. Keeping reading about Lisa on our website here: https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-lisa-dowl

08.01.2022 ‘When feelings cannot be attributed to words, they are better shared through music.’ Such is the belief of our lower brass specialist, Jean Paul (JP) Cerdan where music and dance is at the very centre of his Latin American heritage. Introduced to the trumpet by his father (also played by his grandfather), and later the clarinet, it was when he picked up a tuba that he realised his future direction as an instrumentalist. The beautiful golds and silvers of brass instruments and their influences in Latin music cemented this direction for JP and now St Andrew’s students have the benefit of this passionate tutor as a member of our wonderful group of immersion and instrumental teachers. Read more about Jean-Paul on our website here: https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-jean-paul

07.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY // Usually at this time of the year the music students are busy performing at our College Fair. Today we look back at the 2016 Fair which saw many of our music ensembles and students perform across 2 different stages throughout the whole day. Our Friends of Music were also busy serving delicious Tacos and Nachos, raising money to support our music students.

07.01.2022 Both Primary and Secondary students were treated to musical performances this week at our Assemblies. A confident Primary Choir performed 'Giant of the Forest' by Australian composer Glyn Lehman for students of the Secondary School while the Concert Band enjoyed performing 'Tambora!' by William Owens for their peers. It is so fabulous to be sharing live music with our student and staff audiences.

07.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // with Megan Schumann Specialist Music Tutor, Megan Schumann, began to develop her unwavering love for the piano at the age of four, when her mother discovered her playing songs by ear that had been taught to her older sisters at their piano lessons. After spending some years post high school, working in accounting, Megan combined numbers with music notes and found herself fulfilling her artistic passion as accompanist for the St Andrew’s College Choir. S...ince Megan began work with the College in 2017, her role has grown to include private tuition and the accompaniment of four choirs including Junior Singers, Primary Choir, College Choir and Senior Vocal ensemble. Not only does she provide invaluable support to these groups on piano, the students love hearing her singing along! https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-megan-sch See more

07.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // with Clare Hannaway. Clare began ballet at a young age, but it was not her feet that reacted to the music. She loved listening to the classical songs the choreography was set to and soon enough her fingers were itching to tickle the ivories of the old piano that sat in the hallway at the dance studio. The only one of six children in her family to pursue music over athletics, Clare’s Mum was incredibly supportive and gifted her with a humble Casio keyboa...rd for her eleventh birthday. Proving to her parents that she was committed to her lessons, she studied AMEB and Trinity College repertoire and when she started to sit exams at thirteen, upgraded to a second-hand piano. Clare also studied flute and violin and immersed herself in the ensemble experience during school, but it was the piano that remained her passion. Read more about Clare on our website here: https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-clare-han

05.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // When Gavin Hamburger was challenged by his music teacher to match the notes being played on piano with a whistle, he didn’t realise that his enthusiastic attempts, whether right or wrong, would see him win a second-hand clarinet. The rest as they say, is history. From there Gavin went on to learn piano and classical clarinet and later the saxophone when one influential tutor introduced him to jazz. It was also while learning the saxophone that he develo...ped an appreciation for the link between the academic learning of music and live performance. Gavin spent two decades living and working overseas before settling back with family on the Sunshine Coast and starting Hamburger Music Productions. With the connections he made overseas, even before COVID-19, Gavin was already a master of the art of online music lesson delivery, to keep up with his students abroad. Keep reading about Gavin on our website: www.saac.qld.edu.au/blog/wonderful-wednesday-gavin-hamburger

05.01.2022 Flashback Friday today takes us back to Secondary Music Camp 2018. Our annual Music Camps are always a highlight in our calendar as our students come together to share in a weekend of music making and building relationships. Please enjoy a selection of photos from 2018!

04.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY // The 2020 Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod commences this evening with the Brass and Woodwind section. 04.01.2022 The Music department brought plenty of cheer and joy to our community in the final week with pop-up Christmas Carols around the College. Music students treated staff, students, parents and even our neighbours at AVEO to a variety of traditional and new Christmas carols to get us into the spirit.

04.01.2022 Wonderful Wednesday // Linley Chai Linley Chai’s love of music was not immediate when she started the piano at age 7, but was later ignited when she joined a recorder ensemble. From there, music was an intrinsic part of her school and social life, and she continued to learn the piano as well as the violin and harp. More than a passion, Linley was driven to make music her career while always asking, how does music stay relevant? Part of answering this self-imposed question ha...s led to combining her work as a music teacher with entrepreneurial and philanthropic pursuits. Read more about Linley on our Website here: https://www.saac.qld.edu.au//wonderful-wednesday-linley-ch

03.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY // This time last year our music students were fortunate to travel to the Gold Coast and participate in the Aspire International Youth Music Festival. Throughout the Festival the students performed in public performances, adjudicated performances and the Gala Concert Performance, workshopped with international clinicians, attended masterclasses on their instruments and met a number of other like minded students from schools across Australia and New Zealand. It was a musically engaging and rewarding experience for all!

03.01.2022 Wonderful Wednesday // with Clare Cundall. It was love at first lesson for instrumental tutor Clare Cundall and the piano. Encouraged to take up lessons in Year 3, she is especially thankful to her parents for that nudge in the right musical direction. Clare is a firm believer that an encouraging, flexible, and kind teacher goes a long way towards ensuring a student persists with instrumental pursuits and this is the environment she sets out to create for her students at St A...ndrew’s. Her own experiences in learning at Amadeus Music School in Darwin, with self-esteem boosting teachers, saw her confidently tackling Music Examinations and playing at local markets in no time. Clare’s inspiring teachers and her first pop piano book purchase (Delta Goodrem’s Innocent Eyes album) helped her to combine her desire for learning and her musical tastes that eventually led to a career in music teaching. 02.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY // Usually on this day each year we celebrate the College's Foundation Day. Enjoy taking a look back at how our musicians have contributed to our past Foundation Day services.

02.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY // Another victim of Covid-19, unfortunately our annual combined Jazz Orchestra workshop and concert with Matthew Flinders Anglican College was cancelled this year. A favorite on the College calendar, the combined event is one of two events in the year that brings together the band students and staff from both College's. The focus of the event is friendship, combining on a piece together and a preview performance of each groups Eisteddfod repertoire (as well as some amazing food supplied by members of the group and our amazing Friends of Music). Enjoy some of the memories from previous events below. #MakingMusicTogether #jazz

02.01.2022 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY // Jarvis Miller On the last Wednesday of the school year for students, we are posting this final Wonderful Wednesday story about our amazing Cello Specialist, Mr Jarvis Miller. When asked to reflect on his musical beginnings it was hard for Jarvis to recall a time before he was playing Cello, given he started learning at the age of four. His childhood memories are filled with the sound of his Mum singing aloud and of playing music with his twin sister whi...ch helped keep practice enjoyable. It was during Jarvis’s teenage years, that a musical score would spark a passion for composition and lead to being awarded 2nd place in the ANZVS International Viola Composition Competition. He more recently took on the task of writing the theme track for a children’s television show called Reading@home TV during the COVID-19 online learning period. Now studying to become a Secondary Music Teacher, his career is a successful and rewarding blend of teaching, performing, composing and arranging. 01.01.2022 Our Jazz Orchestra explored an innovative way of rehearsing last term with the help of the College AV Department and we are thrilled to share the video of this experience with you!

01.01.2022 When Tetias Goh’s 3 older siblings were on the grand piano around the clock for their own practice, his Mum decided he would take up the violin instead! So began his love for strings buoyed by the encouragement and support from his parents even though they weren’t musical themselves. That love then led Tetias to take up lessons with one of his greatest influences, Mrs Maria Salmon, and to detour from a planned career in engineering, to study at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Now St Andrew’s has the good fortune of having him onboard as one of our violin specialists and in having him assist students with the complex technicalities of the pieces being played by our String Orchestra.
