24.01.2022 Here's a fantastic resource to help understand the hydrogeology of the Great Artesian Basin in an easy to understand presentation of how it was formed and how it functions. As part of our cross-border collaborations to investigate web-based tools for the GAB Springs Stewardship initiative, our water resource officers Aaron and Melissa reviewed early content in preparation for the video, which was produced by the Queensland Government. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ch_f_LitxX4

23.01.2022 Two pastoral businesses have been awarded grants to trial management practices and technologies to better adapt to varying climates and markets as part of the Board’s Building Pastoral Sustainability Project. Lyndavale Cattle Co received funds for a walk-over weigh and draft system for De Rose Hill Station in the Marla Oodnadatta district. The system will enable decisions regarding livestock movements to be data-driven, thereby optimising turn-off weights and maximising retu...rns. It will also help in taking action to prevent over-grazing by enabling timely decisions with respect to livestock weights ‘plateauing’ during dry times. Paroo Pastoral was funded for a regenerative grazing project for Buckleboo Station in the Gawler Ranges. Its project aims to change grazing management to a time-controlled grazing method and allow complete spelling of a grazed area for at least 10 months. It includes additional sub-division fencing, and trap yards around all watering points. Findings and results from both projects will be shared and a second grant round will open in mid 2021. 23.01.2022 Having long been interested in sustainable pastoralism, Douglas Lillecrapp knew his country could be more productive and sought to restore the natural landscape function to create a healthier property. Plans to restore an ephemeral swamp were aimed at the natural landscape function, reducing soil erosion, increasing water infiltration and rehydrating the landscape to ultimately grow more feed and restore biodiversity. These and other works undertaken on Todmorden are among th...e stories captured as part of our year-long Landscape Legacies Project. The project captured and shared stories of successful soil rehabilitation works completed over the previous four decades and was designed to enable land managers to learn from tried and tested soil management works on arid properties prior to starting or expanding their own projects. You can read more about the works completed on Todmorden at https://bit.ly/3nL85b8 Landscape Legacies was delivered by the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board, through funding from the Australian Government's National Landcare Program.

23.01.2022 We've had a few people ask if the Field Day is back on given the COVID lockdown finished early. While we would have loved to have hosted the field day for the region, we based our decision on the restrictions that came into place last Monday. This limits us to 100 people in the entire venue - we already had in excess of 170 people registered to attend. While restrictions may be reduced on 1 December, there are too many uncertainties to host the event two days later. We d...on't know if more cases will occur, if restrictions will continue or if the one person per 4sq m rule will stay in place, which effectively halves the amount of people we can have attend. The uncertainties affect our presenters, pastoral community who need to plan travel and accommodation, stall holders and suppliers. We will host a summer series of webinars so the community doesn't miss out on the field day presenters in the meantime and we are also considering an online summer holiday program for kids. We look forward to bringing you an even bigger and better Field Day in December 2021, and fingers crossed COVID won't be a issue. Her talk 'Containment feeding ewes: how to make it a success' will cover set up and design on a large and small scale, which animals to feed and nutrition and health in containment. Deb assists producers with nutrition and production planning in their sheep and beef enterprises. Over the past few years, Deb has been k...eenly involved in improving performance in lamb feedlots and feeding ewes in containment due to the poor seasonal conditions. Prior to starting her Talking Livestock business, Deb worked in the commercial nutrition space in several different roles covering technical, sales and national management of a ruminant business. Deb has also been involved with sheep genetic programs and DNA, EID technology and extension and sheep research. Deb will be speaking in session 6 on Day 2 of the SA Arid Lands Pastoral Field Day. 15.01.2022 We have made the difficult decision to postpone the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board's Pastoral Field Day due to COVID until December 2021. As you are aware South Australia has strengthened its restrictions to reduce the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak. With current restrictions on venue capacity limited to 100 we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with the Field Day this year. The registrations had already reached almost double this and with exhibitors it has been sh...aping up to be numbers beyond which could be managed or allowed in the current climate. Thank you to the partners who have collaborated to stage the event, and funded or sponsored various aspects. The support we have been shown by suppliers, attendees from the pastoral community, presenters, the venue, agencies, and exhibitors has been incredible and we look forward to connecting with you all when we give this another shot on 2-3 December 2021. We will make it third time lucky. Again, we thank you for your support of this event and we are confident that with your support we will deliver an even bigger and better event in 2021. If you have any questions regarding the field day, please contact your Community Landscape Officer or Cherie Gerlach, Team Leader Communications and Engagement, on 0427 413345 or email [email protected].

11.01.2022 If you live in or visit the North East Pastoral District, there's a fair chance you haven't seen this plant for quite some time. It's a Rhodanthe microglossa, snapped by our resident plant-nerd Di Makotter, who's also the district's Community Landscape Officer. Di found it near Bimbowrie after the last rains and it turns out that there haven't been any new records in the area for more than 40 years. ... It's certainly a sign of a good start to the season and a great example of the biodiversity that appears in our district after the rain.
