17.01.2022 'Champion of Champions' Cup Final Review by Craig Laird GHAN Kilburn have been crowned the Champions of Champions after a thrilling 5-4 win over USC Lion at the Parks Football Centre.... Ghan came into the game brimming with confidence after dismantling Elizabeth Downs 5-0 in the Sunday Presidents Cup while USC Lion out lasted BOSA in the Saturday final winning 3-2. As they did last week Ghan got off to the perfect start when Headman Dadzie opened the scoring on 44 seconds to the delight of their support. On 25 minutes USC drew level when they were awarded a penalty for a handball and striker Kurtis Cracknell stepped up to convert the spot kick. Ghan regained the lead on 44 minutes when a USC short goal kick was intercepted before Masoud Teymouri fired home. Two minutes into 1st half stoppage time Lion equalized when a ball into the box fell to Elliott Carbou who turned before beating two defenders and slotting his chance. Ghan opened the 2nd half strongly and were soon 4-2 up with goals from Brima Kamara and Teymouri leaving USC a mountain to climb. Lion were up to the challenge and had a lifeline on 65 minutes when a free kick into the back post found Tyrone Owen who fired home. Ten minutes later Lion were again level when a James Thelwell throughball wasn’t handled by the outcoming keeper and Cracknell was on hand to score his 2nd to the cheers of the USC faithful. Four minutes into stoppage time as the game appeared to be heading to a penalty shootout the decisive moment came when Ghan pushed forward and Jamil Danish was in the right place and finished in style to the roar of the Ghan support as they clinched the Champions of champions title. Coach Desmond Tucker was full of pride after the game I am very proud and still celebrating. Having won only three games in the group stage what was the spark for the teams glorious run in the knockout phase We had some new players in the group stage and it took some time to gel but through the knockout phase we have gelled and confidence has grown. The win is surely Ghan’s greatest achievement since the formation in 2002 and Tucker is looking forward to what may follow We are professional in the way we go about it and we will aim for the league title next year. Our whole community is full of pride at the moment. Dave Eggers It was a great game, I was really proud of the boys. We were undermanned with a few players missing with injury but we played some really good football and certainly got on top in patches of the game. Credit to Ghan who have pace and play to their strengths. It’s been a tough year but one that we can be proud of as a club. #SAASL #ChampionofChampions #craiglairdreview
