25.01.2022 An amazing endorsement from @sounds_like_design Link to vote in bio: This is my pick from the @institute_architects_aus People’s Choice Awards lineup. I love this house, especially because it’s a #retrofitfirst project. And for the indoor-outdoor flow, and old-meets-new mastery. It’s the OUTSIDE [THE] BOX house by @troppo.architects in Adelaide.... From them: Opposite a school (with imposing dropoffs-and-pickups), a turn-of-the-century return-verandah-villa a 90s south-facing addition an absence of north a dark interior, overloaded with cedar, exposed- brick, slate-tiles. The rework begins with a limestone streetwall, privacy extended by timber-battening. A flick-of-a-roof beyond draws visitors (Oz-style) to the back the villa remains whole, still well-defined up-front. Delivering northern-light is a central design strategy. All materials are passed through the low-embodied-energy filter. A new Lounge is surrounded by garden. Large-doors, north-and-south, slide beyond the building, transforming the space into an ‘outdoor-room’. A Gallery purposefully separates lounging from kitchen-dining. A blackbutt-ceiling lightens, without divorcing new-from-old, whilst charcoal-tinted polished-concrete nods to the slate. Equipoised between activity-areas, a garden-forward verandah extends the internal material palette. By always asking ‘what-if?’ the former-CEO owner pushed us to upend an unimaginative brief, taking us well ‘outside-the-box’. The result: a light-filled home, immersed in its treasured garden. 17.01.2022 SA Architecture Awards 2021 - Commendation for Heritage Architecture CAA Higher Courts Redevelopment | Hassell @hassell_studio with Baukultur @_baukultur| Raphael Christinat Architects were tasked with a complex brief to contemporise the State’s High Court facilities, upgrading both the Supreme Court building, constructed in 1869 and the Sir Samuel Way Building. The skilful design solution needed to consider functional, operational and safety requirements while reconciling ...years of unsympathetic development across multiple buildings. The result is a competent, articulate design that creates a new, legible single point of entry that flows through to an axial courtyard, cleverly landscaped to resolve levels, define new from old and offer contrast to the warm and sensitively lined new court rooms. This adaptation is both poetic and pragmatic, innovatively restoring pride in the State’s Supreme Court. Built in 1925, conservation involved careful stripping back of unsympathetic later changes, revealing original significant historic elements. Contemporary kitchen and toilet facilities have been cleverly inserted and ...steel doors and copper roofing will ensure a long serviceable life.
