25.01.2022 Open Mat 06.09.2020 - focus peaking (both in camera and in my old eyes) wasn't really helping me much yesterday - had to ditch most of the set, these were the best of the unblurred, sorry if I missed you, get you next time.
25.01.2022 If the weather holds there will be a few mats down at Parliament Street Park (the big blue slide) for an open air open mat session tonight from 7pm.
24.01.2022 EP.02 of the Saber Chronicles featuring Professor Anthony Cavaleiro Pisano is now available for viewing on The Saber BJJ youtube channel. I was intending to try and keep these condensed as much as possible, to suit our social media conditioned bite size attention spans, but there is just too much contextual narrative woven throughout that Im just going to let them breathe a bit. Notwithstanding I have also provided some time stamps in the description so you can jump to specific topics of discussion, or if you want to watch in a bit at a time chunks. So without further to do, Saber BJJ presents Episode 2 of the SABER CHRONICLES: Knight Moves. PS. I dont have any funds to pay an editor to check the production quality so there may be a few errant spellings here and there. https://youtu.be/xLYkM8BlZqE
23.01.2022 For those who are taking one for the community and social distancing themselves from the mats , here are some free techniques from tonights class - just enter the code #covidbreathavoidance.
23.01.2022 Working on the edit of the 3rd episode of the Saber Chronicles - needless to say this particular guest has given me an excessive load of material to wade through and try and whittle down to a more digestible chunk. Episode 2 : Knight Moves ft. Cavaleiro, will be posted tonight, so watch out for that.
23.01.2022 Resident Judo Black Belt, Eric Amani teaches the troops the subtle art of falling over - Ouchi Armis. There is nothing quite as aurally disconcerting (but strangely calming) as the echoing thud of 25 random hands slapping the mats.
22.01.2022 Location for today's beach wrestling (turquoise arrow) - from 3:30.

21.01.2022 Reminder: Next Saturday grading day/open mat will start at 2:30 and finish at 4:30. Well have a BBQ afterwards to round off the year. Will probably be easier if everyone just bring some food to share - if youre a carnivore bring some meat, if youre a herbivore bring some salad, if youre an omnivore bring some meat and some salad. Weather is not looking overly considerate so well play it by ear.
21.01.2022 Heres the shortened version of the white belt kata video I posted on the club youtube channel yesterday. For any of you who watched the whole 1hour and 16mins of blank video, I commend you for your dedication to the art. Its a bit rough and ready but it shows the sequence clearly enough. Remember its for both the offence and defence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEox2XlVh2w&feature=youtu.be

21.01.2022 2 Big surprise promotions today at Saber BJJ. Congratulations to Aaron on the big move to brown and an extra big congratulations to Anthony on his move to Black - the end of one journey and the beginning of another. As with most of us, Im sure, these guys have had many of ups and downs across their long jiu-jitsu - dare I say it - journey, with multiple injuries (the chronic niggling types as well as serious ones), etc, but at some point in the path they fully dedicated th...emselves to the training and to the learning, to the accomplishments as well as the disappointments and just hung in there. Its a tough course to stay, but it should be. It was a great turn out today, thanks all for coming and supporting the team. And finally, Saber BJJ would also like to Congratulate Eric Yeung, who started training with us this year, and who has also just been awarded his black belt from his long time coach in Brisbane today. 20.01.2022 https://youtu.be/91o0o4EGoeI Hi all, I hope this new episode of the Saber Chronicles finds you well and coping positively with the current restricted way of life. Although it is allowing opportunity to stretch skill development in other areas I think I can safely say Id still prefer the delicate scent of liniment infused sweat wafting through my nostrils. Now, I really tried to keep this episode to more of a single session length but a few issues crept in to thwart the a...ttempt, namely some kind of digital gremlin munchin on some after midnight mega bytes in the video file. I managed a longhand work around but the trade off was the longhand EP.04 version. In this episode we chat with Eric Giorgio Amani aka Mestre do Ritmo (rhythm master) : Judo Black belt, BJJ Blue Belt and Professional Musician. We discuss similarities and differences in Judo/BJJ training methods, focusing on potential crossover principles between the Martial Arts and the Creative Arts. Again, in the youtube description Ive marked in some specific timecodes. Also, there will be a related follow up addendum to this episode, that Im still finalising that you will not want to miss.
20.01.2022 Open mats have been bumping with energy since our reopening at the start of the month. It's prompted me to formalise some thoughts I've had for a while and which have become more obviously observed since our return. Are you too much the rider, or too much the horse? The ancient Greeks conceived a useful metaphoric way of understanding and interpreting a person’s natural proclivities to move along certain paths of action: The Rider and the Horse. Within each of our individ...ual structures of human activation there exists a constant tension and struggle between emotion and thought. The horse is our emotional nature continually impelling us to move. This horse has tremendous energy and power, but without a rider it cannot be guided; it’s wild, subject to predators, and continually heading into trouble. The rider is our thinking self. Through training and practise, it holds the reins and guides the horse, transforming this powerful animal energy into something productive. The one without the other is useless. Without the rider, no directed movement, no purpose. Without the horse, no energy, no power. In most people the horse dominates, and the rider is weak. In some people the rider is too strong, holds the reins too tightly, and is afraid to occasionally let the animal go into a gallop. The horse and the rider must work together. This means we consider our actions beforehand, we bring as much thinking as possible to a situation before we make a decision. But once we decide what to do, we loosen the reins and enter action with boldness and a spirit of adventure. Instead of being slaves to this energy, we channel it. That is the essence of rationality. Robert Greene, The Laws of Human Nature, pg 40. A balanced approach is what we should be aiming for. But that balance is notoriously difficult to come to ‘know’, because it is different for everyone, often requires nuanced adjusting to specific situations, and it keeps on moving. Open mat and open sparring is by far the best place to explore the extremes of our vast internal territories, to search out that vitally important balance point between emotion and thought, between curiosity and scepticism, between the wild and the tame - the fulcrum of our progressive effectuality. I’m still searching. Hopefully I find it before I find the nacker’s yard. See more

19.01.2022 video from last Saturdays gradings - I cut half the footage and sped up a quarter of the rest of it and its still 10mins long sorry.
18.01.2022 Put together an off the cuff Saber Chronicles episode with 2 wanderers I heard have been lurking in dirty basements and garages to wrangle a fix. https://youtu.be/yeXauWQcWp4
18.01.2022 Normal class schedule will recommence tonight. No-gi 7:30. Come and HiiT the mats.
17.01.2022 My whole perception of time has really been messed up by the extended Covid-19 hibernation period - Someone told me stage 3 restrictions could be lifted by June 27 - in my mind I was thinking July 27. If the former happens then training resumption could potentially be only 2 weeks away which makes this episode more relevant than originally intended. Having said that I would have expected a few more excited people notifying me of the date. https://youtu.be/XCRclcP9NWg
17.01.2022 Was a huge session workshopping the various grading techniques. and so forth. It's definitely been refreshing to see so much new and varied interest in Saber Jiu-Jitsu of late.
17.01.2022 Hello fellow jiu-jiteiros. I hope you are all well and taking advantage of this time off the mats to maybe reconnect with some old passions or to explore some new interests to keep the mind progressing and developing. As alluded to in my last post, Ive been working on formalising the idea of producing a series of online interviews with individual club members. Having a strong tendency to always steer away from clich, these are intended to be a bit different than the typi...cal response of just showing some solo drills and exercises you can do at home. The primary idea is aimed to get to know a bit more about the people you train with and their specific personal Jiu-jitsu journey and where possible offer some specific advice for our current home bound existence. I think theyll be a little rough and ready to start out with, but hopefully they will be entertaining and engaging enough to stand up to the itchy fingered trolls. SO without further to do here is the first episode of THE SABER CHRONICLES featuring saber Blue Belt Jesse Gordinho Barnard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcCqKU5ffzY

14.01.2022 Its official, training will resume this Saturday - open mat session from 3:30. Fiona has kindly volunteered to draft up a Covid Safe club policy that everyone will need to familiarise themselves with before jumping on the mats. Also it would be wise to watch episode 7 of the saber chronicles to consider the advice of a slower steadier return to beast mode. School holidays are coming up in a few weeks so kids classes will resume after the break. The weekly schedule wi...ll be reduced as a start, just to gauge the reinitialised interest/attendance after this extended motivation sapping time away, but Ill confirm all that after Ive had a think. As an addendum to this hopefully well received post, attached is episode 8 of the Saber Chronicles #white belts matter - featuring a selected mix of our current white belt crop. Probably a bit of under estimation on how much content I was going to get so I have had to break it into 2 parts. Also, it has been brought to my attention that there may be some who have been slightly offended with my nickname selections - to that I say, I havent proposed anything that I myself would not be chuffed to receive. If its right it sticks if its not it wont. Its just a bit of fun. Ive missed the fun. I hope it doesnt take too long to come back after we get back. Sorry there was no quality control was run on the final edit so excuse the illiterate fingers. https://youtu.be/7G0lWFYpHC4
12.01.2022 Episode 05 of the Saber Chronicles is now available for streaming. One of the fittest 63 year olds around, Ray started Jiu-jitsu only a few years ago but has had a lifetime dedicated to fitness and Martial Arts. I take this opportunity to find out more about Rays background and upbringing and touch on particular generational differences and advices for the older grapplers out there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1HKVtiXfhc&feature=youtu.be
12.01.2022 Hi all - there will be no training available between Dec 25 - Jan 1. Other than that training times as usual (or modified to suit - so keep your ears to the ground).
12.01.2022 SATURDAY 2nd JAN Beach Wrestling & BBQ to Start the new year 3:30 - 5:30pm. General order of events wrestling first - basic round robin arrangement adjusted/divided up to suit who turns up - there'll be some prizes and the inaugural beach master cup up for grabs. Then we'll finish off with a BBQ. BYO everything that we can put in a pile (or likely a few dedicated piles) and share, yeah? Going on past years and considering time of day I would suggest bringing some warmer clothes if you're sticking around for the grub. I think the Bellerive Bluff end of the beach will be better as it's close to BBQs - hopfully the tide ain't high.

10.01.2022 BACK ON THE MATS - with plenty of sweaty hugs all round. As I mentioned well start on a reduced weekly schedule for a while until everyone and everything settles back into a more normalised way of life (if that is ever going to be a thing anymore). So itll be: Tuesday night - No Gi Thursday night - Gi Saturday - Open mat... Really good to see everyone face to face again, and to see the motivation to train has not been too ground down by the long break. For those who have been following the saber chronicles heres part 2 to the whitebeltsmatter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lw8vEu0YOaI
09.01.2022 Hi all, just a reminder that the primary focus for tonight is on the sets of grading lists. I've printed an A3 set to have on hand but would be good if you all download your respective list to your phone for easy access. If you have any questions on what's what, in terms of techniques etc, tonight's the night to ask. We'll warm up with the level 1 (white belt 1) kata - on the saberbjj youtube channel for reference. Just now
08.01.2022 Fun training today - even getting walloped by a couple of sledge hammers at the end sparring with Tom Cuffe. Good to see a few faces we havent seen in a while.... And also good to see the familiar new faces putting in some extra yards with the immanent prospect of competition looming on the horizon. (sorry Jack, the fb automatic facial recognition tagging algorithm didnt seem to recognize you and I couldnt find you in the search) See more
07.01.2022 In this Episode of The Saber Chronicles we talk to BJJ Brown Belt and student of Psychology, Tyson Tagarela Read. I introduce the ideas and pretext behind the club name and logo, which then leads in to a more in depth conversation on the specific processes of the individual hemispheres of the brain, and how each outlook may help or inhibit our progressive understanding, and practical application of Knowing. Phew this was a mammoth editing task I cut out 1 and a half h...ours and its still over an hour and a quarter. There was a particular segment Tyson suggested would be better left out, I thought different. The key point being no one knows everything and nor does one size always fit all. PS. Just a reminder to help me out with the **CALL OUT** request I posted on the club messenger group, if you havent seen it go and have a look. (I have a pretty good idea who will answer the call and who probably wont bother but I feel it important to still give everyone the opportunity, and I enjoy being surprised). https://youtu.be/yXrWG8gj-jg
06.01.2022 The sunshine will be back soon people, just hang in there. Here is the short but epic follow up video to last weeks Saber Chronicles episode about Creativity and Music. Special shout outs to Eric the rhythm master Amani. Lawrence Formiga Churches, Kaea the Kaizer Sayers, and the 1 degree of separation, Asher the hammer and nail Read, for the assist. Enjoy. Im having some difficulty clearing space for time to do more interviews but Ill try and keep them going. https://youtu.be/I2qJIVLUvRA
06.01.2022 https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D6fojhVO5V0 Kabaddi - arguably considered to be the oldest team contact sport. I feel I should have known about it before now. Maybe a new warm up game to add to the mix?
05.01.2022 I've been within 2 or 3 kg of 79kg's for the last 20 years. As long as I kept active and sweating regularly I could eat almost anything I wanted and not put on any weight. Now my body is getting older, and feeling the accumulation of many years of injuries, I'm realising that I was perhaps a bit narrow minded thinking good nutrition was just about weight control. With 40 plus years of being conditioned to eat a certain way it's easy to forget what foods do what, so I've started putting these posters together to help with the remembering and reminding reconditioning process. Next one I'm putting together will be Nutrition for ligament and tendon health.
04.01.2022 Im sorry comrade, but I must brrreak you.
03.01.2022 Esprit de corps - what is a team, and what does it need to make it strong? Is a team identity important? Thoughts anyone?Esprit de corps - what is a team, and what does it need to make it strong? Is a team identity important? Thoughts anyone?
