12.01.2022 Charlie Dick - Part 1 of 2 Goomalling is my home town. I went to school at the Sacred Heart Convent there and then to Northam Senior High School for a short tim...e. I’ve got something like fifteen or sixteen brothers and sisters all up, but I’m the oldest. Growing up in Goomalling was great and we were lucky to be around good people, both black and white. We played a lot of sport like country people do, especially Aboriginal people. We played cricket but Aussie Rules was the backbone of our community. Footy and cricket used to be the things I was most interested in. I played for the Perth Demons years ago but I was more interested in work at the time. I was one of those footballers who thought they were solid when I wasn’t. I was lucky enough to get to play a lot of cricket in the Northern Territory and I even got to spend some time with the Australian team. Sport has played an important part in my life. I wouldn’t change a lot of things about my life but I would have liked to have played sport in the city a little more. I played, coached and did administrative stuff in places like Broome and Alice Springs for a number of years. I spent the best part of fifteen years in Broome and ten in Alice Springs, but I started out in Goomalling. Travelling up north and in the Northern Territory kept me interested in a lot of things and kept me in contact with family and friends. Like most Aboriginal people, I have a lot of connections not just in my local area but all across Australia. I’ve been lucky to have met so many good people along the way. The best moments in my life were having my children, because you can’t replace your kids. I have five kidsthe oldest is thirty-four this year and the youngest is twenty-five. I have plenty of grandchildren too, but I don’t get to see them as often as I’d like. Northam has its challenges, but one of its good things is its proximity to the city. We’ve got some good people in the community but I feel like some of our people need to get out of town a little more. When I was growing up I had elders around me telling me our people’s stories, but we were protected from understanding everything about the sacrifices our people made. It’s only a couple of generations ago that our people got the right to vote. I understand that non-Aboriginal people want to improve their lives too, but our people continue to lack so much. I don’t like the fact that the wider Australian public accepts that we are less than they are. That’s the truth. Fixing this isn’t a matter of education. We need to get real about our identity and who we are. When we are ready to recognise facts and who we are as Australians, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, we will be able to move forward as a country. We need to recognise that we don’t have anything like the connection with England that we had in the past. Our identity matters and a lot of Australians don’t know what our identity is or even if we have one. Towns like Goomalling and Northam are a perfect example, because for generations so many people have moved to the city. Hopefully things will change and we get back to a sense of local community. We need local people to be involved and happy to be a part of their home towns. Our people need to be given the opportunity to have more input into the direction their towns are taking so they can feel they are a part of it too. Something our people have been wrestling with is the fit between our identity and our culture. We as Aboriginal people need to express ourselves a little bit better about who we are. I sometimes worry that we are creating a culture that wasn’t our own, moving like other people moved and dancing like other people danced. It’s understandable though, because we’ve lost so much. Nyoongar people have lost so much of their traditional culture, especially in terms of language. We need to re-connect with our traditional culture because it’s the way we need to communicate who we really are. Part 2 will be released tomorrow.
