24.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, Virgin. Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque started life with what she called the heaviest of her crosses - she could do nothing to lighten the cross her mother carried. She entered the Order of the Visitation nuns at the age of 24. After 3 years of being a nun, she experienced the first of her revelations which lasted a period of 13 months, during which Jesus Christ appeared to her at intervals. His human heart was to be th...e symbol of his divine-human love. She died at the age of 43. As [Jesus] was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is now called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. 22.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Wenceslaus, Martyr Wenceslaus was born in 907 near Prague, son of the Duke of Bohemia. His saintly grandmother, Ludmilla, raised him and sought to promote him as ruler of Bohemia in place of his mother, who favored the anti-Christian factions. Ludmilla was eventually murdered, but rival Christian forces enabled Wenceslaus to assume leadership of the government. His rule was marked by efforts toward unification within Bohemia, support of the Ch...urch, and peace-making negotiations with Germany, a policy which caused him trouble with the anti-Christian opposition. His brother Boleslav joined in the plotting, and in September of 929 invited Wenceslaus to Alt Bunglou for the celebration of the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian. On the way to Mass, Boleslav attacked his brother, and in the struggle, Wenceslaus was killed by supporters of Boleslav. 12.01.2022 This Sunday, we celebrate World Day for Migrants and Refugees. For more than a century now, the Catholic Church has marked this occasion as a way to celebrate t...he gift of migrants and refugees and draw attention to the plight of millions around the world who are forcibly displaced and trafficked. We recall that Jesus himself was a refugee; forced to flee his homeland for safety. Archbishop Peter A Comensoli has encouraged us to reflect on Pope Francis' message for the day, where he emphasises the need to welcome, protect, promote and integrate those who come to our shores seeking refuge and a new life. We also pray for our own migrant and refugee communities, who are such a gift to our society and Melbourne Catholic community! Read Pope Francis' message here: bit.ly/MigrantRefugeeSunday2020

11.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Josephine Bakhita, Virgin "For many years, Josephine Bakhita was a slave but her spirit was always free and eventually that spirit prevailed. Born in Olgossa in the Darfur region of southern Sudan, Josephine was kidnapped at the age of 7, sold into slavery and given the name Bakhita, which means fortunate. She was resold several times, finally in 1883 to Callisto Legnani, Italian consul in Khartoum, Sudan.... Two years later, he took Josephine to Italy and gave her to his friend Augusto Michieli. Bakhita became babysitter to Mimmina Michieli, whom she accompanied to Venice’s Institute of the Catechumens, run by the Canossian Sisters. While Mimmina was being instructed, Josephine felt drawn to the Catholic Church. She was baptized and confirmed in 1890, taking the name Josephine." When August Michieli wanted to return with her to Africa, she declined to go. The ensuig case to resolve the matter eventually concluded that she had in fact been free since 1885 according to laws of Italy which had made slavery illegal. She stayed in Italy and went on enter the Institute of Saint Magdalene of Canossa in 1893 and made her profession 3 years later.
