23.01.2022 VISIBLE WELLBEING // In July, as part of our Visible Wellbeing journey, our staff commenced a training module in Attention and Awareness. Attention and awareness skills help us to choose what we would like to pay attention to. They also help us with the awareness to shift our attention from things that make us feel deflated and anxious to things that bring us joy and energy. One way to build these skills is savouring. Savouring is the practice of noticing and getting pleas...ure from lifes little moments, like the feeling of sunshine on your back in winter or the smell of fresh coffee in the morning. In tough times, your savouring skills will help you more easily switch gears to find positives in situations and in people. Its a form of brain training that helps us focus and sustain our attention. To learn more please visit: https://www.leawaters.com/blog Even if its only one extra second of smelling the coffee before drinking the coffee, it helps! Remote Learning: The Term 3 Edition starts tomorrow. Assembly day timetable (which you can find here if you need: https://bit.ly/SHCRLwhenisclass).

23.01.2022 AFTER LISTENING, SUGGEST AND SUPPORT // So far we have covered tips for asking RUOK? and the importance of listening with an open mind. Once someone has shared what theyre going through with you, you might suggest to them that they think about one small step they might be able to take to improve their situation. If theyve been feeling this way for more than two weeks they might need to see their doctor or an appropriate health professional. ... You could say: What do you think is a first step that would help you through this? What can I do right now to support you? Have you spoken to your doctor or a health professional about this? It might be a matter of finding the right fit with someone. OR Whats something you enjoy doing? Making time for that can really help. Make sure you view this helpful RUOK?Day video put together by our 2020 College Captains Harriet, Skyla and Zoe for more tips and details on the planned RUOK?Day activities during our school timetable on Thursday.

21.01.2022 DRESS TO EXPRESS // We are concluding Love Your Body Week by encouraging everyone to Dress To Express today. Today we celebrate us; our individuality, our diversity and all the positive things our bodies do for us. Remember to dress to express yourselves today through your Zoom profile, your clothing, your hobby, your talents. Maybe its a costume outfit, wearing something that expresses who you are or what you wear for horse riding. It might be the way you love to style ...your hair or it could be a favourite character from a movie. And remember to click on the link below to Dance For Georgia and celebrate the gift that Georgia Brown brought to all of us - her beautiful zest for life, her love of herself and what her body could do and forever reminding us to dance like nobody is watching. 21.01.2022 MINDFUL EATING // To continue our current Visible Wellbeing focus on Attention and Awareness as a pathway to wellness, we can build a sense of mindfulness (or moment awareness) into our day through mindful eating! It can be as simple as taking a deep breath before eating and saying a silent thank you for the the food. Consider your meals to be an invitation to pause and enjoy the present moment. School work requires a lot of heady intellectual effort and in the midst of ...all this thinking its easy to ignore the bodys feelings. Eating engages all of the bodys senses, smelling, tasting, seeing, touch and even hearing. When you see the food on the plate, take a moment to notice how it looks, the colours and texture. Breathe in deeply and notice the pleasant smells of the food. Reconnecting with these physical sensations promotes ease in our daily life and makes it easier to cope with the many stresses of life. Mindful eating offers us the opportunity to enjoy these many sensations and reconnect with our feeling body. If you find it difficult to eat mindfully, dont worry; making a habit of mindful eating takes time and practice. Sometimes its hard to eat mindfully because doing so we are likely to feel the stress carried in our body which can be very uncomfortable, so the practice requires a lot of self-compassion. Start with just eating one meal or even just one piece of food mindfully. (Source: Berkeley University) At SHC, we have been celebrating Feel Good Foodie Fridays this term - encouraging our community to cook a meal celebrating a culture within our community and then share it mindfully with their family.

From the House leaders: This was such an important day to check in and contact your family and friends, a...nd to act as a reminder to continue to practise this each and every day. It is also important to find someone who you feel comfortable talking to, and reach out if needed. 13.01.2022 CELEBRATING ALL THE POSITIVE THINGS OUR BODIES DO // Positive body image and positive role-modelling involves understanding that healthy bodies come in many shapes and sizes, and that physical appearance says very little about our character or value as a person. It is more about understanding and celebrating all the positive things our bodies can do. Our bodies are quite incredible and unique. We are all so different and diverse, every body is different and EVERY body is a g...ood body. Lets celebrate that! 10.01.2022 LOVE YOUR BODY WEEK // Almost a year ago we lost a much-loved member of the Sacred Heart College community. Georgia Brown passed away on 16 September 2019 and our prayers remain with Georgias parents, Frank and Caroline Brown and her cousins Millicent and Ally. Yesterday, Georgia would have turned 17 and it could not be more fitting that Georgias birthday coincides with Love Your Body Week and the theme of the week which is Dress To Express. Georgia loved dressing to e...xpress herself and had incredible self-pride. She embodied all of the values that encourage us to love who we are. It is only fitting that Georgia is our ambassador for Love Your Body Week. She was proud of what her body could do and she expressed herself with individuality and with pride. Just like Georgia we are asking everyone to Dress to Express this Friday 11 September as part of Love Your Body Week. Dress to Express encourages all of us to: Express our individuality Respect all our differences and diversity Feel proud of ourselves as a person Celebrate all the positive things our bodies can do. How can you do this? Express yourself through your Zoom profile for the week Wearing the clothes that express who you are Wearing something that reflects your passions Wearing something that describes your hobbies or your culture Dressing up as your favourite character Wearing crazy hair, silly socks or a coloured wig like Georgia The possibilities are endless, have fun with it and if you like, share a picture of yourself dressed to express via the link on the bulletin!

Due to COVID-19 we are unable to mark the anniversary with traditional commemorations however, there are still many ways to connec...t with and honour our veterans from home: SHC students Erin Nisbet and Eleanor Naylor (both in Year 9) filmed an entry for the 2020 ATOM One Minute Film Competition on the theme of The Second World War and Your Community. Baked by Us will donate 25% of their profits to the RUOK foundation. The steps to take if someone says they are not OK: 1. Ask R U OK? 2. Listen with an open mind 3. Provide support / Encourage action 4. Check in regularly Small acts of kindness change the world for the better. Who are you going to check in with today?

08.01.2022 R U OK? DAY IS 10 SEPTEMBER 2020 // The message for this year is: Theres more to say after R U OK? 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and be willing to support those around us. In the lead-up to R U OK?Day we will post resources each day to help with what to say when someone says theyre not OK and guide them through how they can continue a conversation that could change a life. You ...dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. STEP 1 OF 4: ASK - Its important to make time to ask are you OK? By giving someone your time and the opportunity to share what theyre feeling, youre giving that person something invaluable. Tips for starting a conversation // Help them open up by asking questions like How are you going? Or Whats been happening? Or Ive noticed that youre not quite yourself lately. How are you travelling? Make an observation. Mention specic things that have made you concerned about them, like Ive noticed that you seem really tired recently or You seem less chatty than usual. How are you going? Or you could say something like: Ive noticed a few changes in what youve been saying/doing. How are things for you at the moment? I know theres been some big life changes for you recently. How are you going with that? You dont seem yourself lately do you want to talk about it? Just checking in to see how youre going? With everything thats going on, youve been on my mind lately, how are you? Youve got a lot going on right now. How are you doing?

08.01.2022 WEAR PURPLE DAY TOMORROW // Diversity embodies all the differences that make us unique and at Sacred Heart College we encourage all students to embrace and celebrate diversity in all forms. Diversity enriches us and encourages us to be creative thinkers, to be innovative, to understand and see different perspectives. Tomorrow, Thursday 27 August, students can wear purple or change their Zoom profile picture to a purple square, to show support and solidarity for all LGBTQ+ youth.

08.01.2022 EXPERIMENTS AT HOME // A group of students from SHCs The Bradbury Club have been designing some great mini-experiments that can be fun activities for families or students to do at home. Here is the recipe for making at-home Lava Lamps out of oil, water and Alka-Seltzer tablets, and some student feedback. Give it a try! Materials: Standard jar/glass Vegetable oil ... Water Plain Alka-Seltzer tablets Food Dye Method: 1. Fill a jar/glass approximately three-quarters full with vegetable oil 2. Fill up a small cup with water 3. Add a few drops of food colouring into the water 4. Pour the water into the vegetable oil, making sure to leave about 3cm space between the top of the water and the jar/glass 5. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a few pieces and drop them into the jar/glass. Experiment findings: I didnt think it would actually work but it ended up looking really cool. - Ella, Year 9 I thought it would work! It didnt, I used olive oil, and lemon-lime flavoured Alka-Seltzer instead of vegetable oil and original Alka-Seltzer. - Grace, Year 7 I was so surprised by the reaction to the Alka-Seltzer - Izzy, Year 7 Awesome to watch, even if I wasnt able to do it. Charlie, Year 10

05.01.2022 ROCKVILLE // The Caring Communities leaders welcomed all students back for Term 4 with our very own SHC Rockville! Similar to the 'Spoonvilles' that have popped up this year, Rockville is a colourful display of our collective school strengths. Students decorated rocks using a pattern to show their individuality and included two strengths one they have shown this year to cope with the challenges and one that they wish to show before the end of the year. The community of coloured rocks is now a vibrant visual reminder in our Innovation Precinct of the students' resilience and individuality.

05.01.2022 CHALLENGING APPEARANCE-BASED TALK // One way of improving our body confidence is by challenging, or becoming more aware, of the language that we use. Appearance-based talk is used widely in our friendship groups, our peer groups, on social media, in advertising, on television and online. We use it with ourselves often in our heads, and this can sometimes be negative self-talk, eg My skin looks awful today. As part of Love Your Body Week, we are encouraging you to celebrate and highlight your and others strengths, uniqueness, talents and body functionality. We can be the change and we can challenge the negative ideals with ourselves and those around us by considering our own appearance-based talk.

03.01.2022 WEBINAR NEXT TUESDAY 8 SEPTEMBER // As a Visible Wellbeing Partner school, we acknowledges the importance of wellbeing as a resource that not only enables us to thrive in the good times, but more importantly to bounce back from tough and challenging times. Throughout 2020, our College community has demonstrated enormous compassion, agility, grit and resourcefulness in responding to difficult and often uncertain change. Grit and resilience, or the ability to bounce back af...ter challenge, is often strongly aligned to a sense of optimism and hope. On behalf of the CEM Wellbeing unit, we invite families to join us in attending a webinar on Grit, Resilience and Optimism with Dan Haesler. In this webinar Dan Haesler: - explores a range of strategies to build personal capacity, stamina and wellbeing - profiles practical ideas to enhance student engagement and motivation - applies the principles of grit and growth mindset to acknowledge the collective efforts of the profession and the importance of looking ahead with a renewed sense of optimism and hope. Grit, Resilience and Optimism with Dan Haesler Tuesday 8 September at 3.45pm for 4.00pm start Please refer to the flyer for full details and links: https://bit.ly/2Z2NaX7

02.01.2022 LISTENING // Yesterday our post provided some tips for asking if someone is OK. But theres more to say after R U OK... Step 2 - If someone says theyre not OK, LISTEN with an open mind. Listening with an open mind can be the hardest thing to do. It can be tempting to jump in and try to push someones worries away or offer a quick fix. It can be really hard to hear that someone you care about is in pain or struggling but try and sit with the discomfort and remind yourself... that your support can be crucial. Give the person some space and quiet so they can find the words to express what theyre going through. You could say: Im here to listen if you want to talk more How are you feeling about that? OR Im not going to pretend I know what its like for you, but Im here to listen to why you feel the way you do. If they dont want to talk to you, try not to take it personally. They might not be ready to talk or it might take them time to realise that you genuinely care. You can also suggest they talk to someone else they trust and ask if you can check in with them again soon.
