25.01.2022 VIETNAM/KIMBERLEY MISSION CARWASH Did somebody say bubbles? Yesterday after school, our Year 11 Vietnam/Kimberley Mission Team washed staff cars for $15 each, with all proceeds going towards the work of the RNDM Sisters in the Kimberley region and Vietnam. The Team did an amazing job and there are a lot of sparkly clean cars in the carpark today! They are looking forward to doing it all over again next week. Here's hoping that the song 'Car Wash' by Christina Aguilera is no longer stuck in their heads like it is in ours...

24.01.2022 Another beautiful moment over our coast captured by Mrs Kelly-Thatcher last week.

24.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY Today is the International Day of People with Disabilities and to promote awareness, Associated & Catholic Colleges of WA arranged for four (now graduated) ACC Para-athletes to present to Catholic Colleges and challenge stereotypes to enable fellow students to think differently about disability. Our Year 7 students were lucky enough to hear from Rhiannon Clarke, a T38 athlete who has represented Australia in 100m, 200m and recentl...y, 400m. At just 15 years of age, Rhiannon won a silver medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, won two bronze medals at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships and is a member of the Australian Paralympic squad set to compete in the upcoming Tokyo Paralympic games. Rhiannon spoke about her journey to finding what she loved athletics and answered student questions regarding her training schedule, personal bests and other sports she has tried throughout the years. The students loved hearing about the ‘Village’ at the Commonwealth Games and shared Rhiannon’s joy over the food! Thank you to the ACC for arranging this inspiring talk for our students and to Rhiannon for sharing her journey and inspiring us all. #idpwd #DisableStereotypes

24.01.2022 THANK YOU OUR LADY OF GRACE! This morning, our very excited Junior Concert Band travelled to Our Lady of Grace Primary School (OLG) in North Beach to perform some hit songs from throughout the years at their Assembly. Most of our students in the Band are OLG graduates and were very excited to play in front of their siblings and teachers. Thank you also to Sophia Thirza (Year 8 Trinity) and Mrs Anstiss for taking these great photos.

23.01.2022 Our sincere thanks to our amazing community who supported our Daffodil Day Fundraising last week. Through our staff Italian lunch and sales of daffodils and donuts to the whole College community, we raised an amazing $3,334.18 - our highest amount raised over the many years we have been supporting the Cancer Council. Cancer Council Western Australia expressed their gratitude this morning as their fundraising efforts this year have been curbed by COVID-19 restrictions. We also received news this morning that since 1999, the College has raised $56,321.04 for Cancer Council! Now we pray that this money helps fund valuable research to cure cancer. 23.01.2022 POSTCARD FROM THE KIMBERLEY MISSION TEAM Yesterday we went to help out volunteers from Feed the Little Children organisation to cook over 300 meals for struggling families. The meals are given to these families on both Friday and Saturday nights to help them out. We were fortunate enough to also receive donations of Vegemite, butter, water, bread and tuna to also give to these families. It was an amazing experience, both cooking as a group and going to visiting the families with huge smiles and who were very grateful to receive the help. - Olivia

23.01.2022 A great learning experience for all involved!

22.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: ATHLETICS TEAM WIN ACC A DIVISION CARNIVAL Great news from the State Athletics Stadium our Athletics Team are the proud winners of the Overall Trophy for the 22nd consecutive time! They also won the Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Overall Boys, Overall Girls and Senior Boys Trophies, narrowly missing out on the remaining Trophy (Senior Girls) by 9 points. We resume our journey to earning our 10th consecutive Triple Crown winning the Swimming, Cross Country a...nd Athletics Carnivals next year as the Swimming Carnival was cancelled this year. The race to the end was very tight, but our Athletes managed to fight through fatigue and injury to bring home the win. Congratulations to our Athletes, Coaches (led by Mr Clement, Miss Tedesco and Mr Skerratt), the Health and Physical Education staff, the ACC Officials and, of course, the parents and spectators who cheered our athletes on.

22.01.2022 POSTCARD FROM THE KIMBERLEY MISSION TEAM Yesterday we travelled to the Beagle Bay community which sadly remains closed under the Emergency Management Plan for Aboriginal Communities. Instead, we stopped at the border and took a photo of the Sacred Heart sign to celebrate our RNDM Sisters' Zeal and commitment in coming to this harsh region to care for the locals and teach their children. Thinking of all of you back home in Sorrento!

21.01.2022 FAREWELL KIMBERLEY MISSION TEAM! Our Kimberley Mission team are currently at Perth Airport and ready to depart for Broome! This group initially applied for the College's traditional Vietnam Mission and instead of cancelling the Mission entirely, decided to instead travel to the Kimberley to assist our RNDM Sisters in this region of WA. They will be visiting St Mary's College, feeding the homeless and children, learning about the Stolen Generation and aboriginal history and experiencing a cultural exchange with Broome Residential College. We can't wait to hear about your adventures!

21.01.2022 MR PETER BOTHE WINS NATIONAL PRINCIPALS AWARD Our much loved Principal, Mr Peter Bothe, has proudly received Western Australia’s only National Excellence in Teaching Award (NEiTA) for leadership by principals following a challenging year in education. Mr Bothe was nominated for the Founders’ Principal Award for Leadership by Head of Gifted and Talented and 2011 NEiTA Award recipient, Mrs Tanya Atherton, in recognition of his outstanding stewardship of student education and we...lfare and exemplary teacher and school community leadership in a year of pandemic. Mr Bothe said, I am very humbled by this award, but there are no good captains without fabulous troops. This award is a tribute to all the wonderful educators at Sacred Heart College. This award was won by just three principals in Australia, with the other two winners living in Victoria and New South Wales. The nomination stated: Peter is not only an outstanding leader within his College, but within the entire education community. He is in touch from the micro-level at the school he knows most of the 1,400+ students by name and is out there every recess chatting with students to the macro-level where he has been the leader on many educational boards as well as the President of the Catholic Secondary Principals Association in WA for six years and was previously the Deputy Chair of the Western Australian College of Teaching (now the Teachers Registration Board). He is innovative in his leadership and staff flourish under his guidance because they feel he cares about them as individuals. An experienced mentor of other school principals, in the future he plans to work as a Principal’s Advisor for Catholic Education WA." With 42 years of experience, Mr Bothe has the longest service record in this year’s NEiTA. On Monday 7 December at a virtual awards ceremony broadcast throughout Australia, 17 Australian educators received a 2020 NEiTA Award. Each recipient received a certificate, a handblown crystal apple trophy and a professional development grant of $5,000 for teachers and $10,000 for school principals. NEiTA is the only nationwide teaching award in Australia (and New Zealand) where nominations are community-based, predominantly by parents and school communities. This year, 23 extraordinary teachers and educators were presented with this award across Australia and New Zealand. Congratulations Mr Bothe and thank you for your excellent leadership in this challenging year.

18.01.2022 LEADERSHIP FORUM On Friday morning, our Captains and House Vice-Captains in Years 7-12 met to brainstorm ideas about the student experience at the College. They enjoyed a muffin and juice box while chatting within their House groups to think of things to add to the House System, before joining with their year groups to brainstorm school-wide initiatives. There were some really great ideas bought up by the students, including the addition of juice at House Feast Days and more regular Dodgeball/sport competitions. Well done to 2020 Head Boy, Alex, and Head Girl, Dorcas, for running and initiating the morning. We are looking forward to the next Leadership Forum with our 2021 Captains who will be announced at our Whole School Assembly on Friday 18 September.

17.01.2022 STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR NATIONAL SURFING TITLES On Friday, our Metro winning Surfing and Bodyboarding teams participated in the SunSmart School Surfing State Finals. We saw some great surfing and bodyboarding skills at the event, including from Andrew and Jack (Year 10 Carden) who won the School State Bodyboarding Title and have been invited to participate in the National Finals in December. This is a truly amazing feat considering the competition was full of surfing academy schools from the South-West. Sebastien (Year 8 O'Reilly) and Seb (Year 9 Barlow) also performed really well and qualified for the Semi-final. Chloe and Luka (Year 11 Trinity) also qualified for the finals and will be back with a vengeance next year. The surf is well and truly up at Sacred Heart!

17.01.2022 RAISING AWARENESS FOR R U OK? DAY The Health & Wellbeing Committee's aim for today was to raise awareness to all students at the College, and we think their goal was met! This morning in the Kiss 'n' Drive, parents and students were surprised with a Kit Kat or TimeOut bar reminding them to "take a break" and have a chat and "take time out". This was followed by a Walkathon at lunchtime, where students were encouraged to chat with their friends and have some genuine conversations. There were also R U OK? Day reminders scattered around the College, including the branded beanbags in the Library and basketballs. Watch the video below to see some of our activities... and to suss out some of the dance moves that will be on show tomorrow night!

15.01.2022 HAPPY BARLOW FEAST DAY! Today we are celebrating all things Barlow. Barlow House Coordinator, Mr Smith, wrote this beautiful reflection about what it means to represent Barlow: "Sisters and Brothers as One, is certainly a motto that is timeless as it is ever relevant in the year that has been. Reflecting on the motto, the wisdom of the Barlow Sisters becomes clear to me. The core of the motto is at the core of what it is to be human; connection, solidarity and mission.... We seek human connection, it is innate. Our time in lockdown earlier in the year thrust the spotlight on its importance. The ability to look someone in the eye while sharing a story, a laugh together while sharing a joke or working together as colleagues to do our tremendous work; our need for human connection is universal. Solidarity is at the core of the values of Barlow House, working together as a team to achieve a common goal. Our wonderful PCG teachers modelling a life of service and faith to our next generation, our Barlow staff in administration; keeping our mission going ensuring we are a streamlined and efficient College, and our Barlowians in Leadership, mentors to others and a guiding light; Always Striving Upwards. Like our inspiration, the Barlow Sisters. Their service to others is at the heart of our House values. So today as we celebrate Barlow House Day, I just thought Id some some of my thoughts. I am very grateful for the opportunity to lead this House. Happy Barlow Feast Day!"

14.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR FAMELAB ACADEMY PARTICIPANTS Sponsored by the WA Museum and Fogarty Foundation, FameLab was run in Western Australia in a world first for secondary students. From an initial 30 students, we selected our final 4 who presented their talks on Wednesday. This competition brought together Science a...nd The Arts and required the students to explain a scientific concept in three minutes without using jargon. They were judged on content as well as charisma. We are extremely proud of the amazing efforts of our students: Benjamin (Year 8 O'Reilly) - who spoke about migration Grace (Year 8 Trinity) - who spoke about déjà vu Alexandra (Year 10 Normandy) - who spoke about genetically modified foods Abbey (Year 8 Kimberley) - who spoke about memory Abbey, who compared our memory to a treasure chest and explained why she could easily remember her European holiday but struggled with last week's school topic, was judged as RUNNER-UP in this state event. 14.01.2022 CLASS OF 2020 DANCE AND DRAMA SHOWCASE After school today, students, staff and family members were treated to a sneak preview of what our Year 12s have been working on in Dance and Drama this Semester. Thanks to everyone who attended and the Tech Crew for great on stage effects. A big applause to all the students who performed this afternoon - you are all very talented!

13.01.2022 FAREWELL TO OUR RETIREES With just under 2 weeks of the school term to go, we are preparing to farewell our 3 retirees - Mr Michael Hart (Humanities), Mr Martin Trevor (Technologies) and Mrs Jenny Biffin (Languages). Michael has taught at the College for 30 years, including his years as the Head of Learning Area - Humanities (previously known as Head of Learning Area - Society and Environment). He has a particular passion for history and is much loved by all students and staf...f at the College for his unique sense of humour. Michael has taught generations of families at Sacred Heart and is usually found happily chatting away with students and their parents (who he taught as well) at Year 12 Graduation. Jenny has been our Head of Learning Area - Languages for many years and has taught at the College for 25 years. Jenny has led many tours to France and organised many Languages Weeks at the College. She has inspired so many students to continue their passion for learning other languages and exploring other cultures. Martin, who came to us from Curtin University and taught in Technologies, will complete 8 years at our College at the end of this year. He has been instrumental in setting up our new Design courses, complete with 3D Printers and new technology. Martin has a passion for DIY and will be doing some projects on the side during his retirement. We are fortunate that we will still see Martin out and about at College events as his son, Spencer, is in Year 12 next year. These staff members will be truly missed at Sacred Heart and we thank them for their involvement in our community. We wish them the best in their retirement but are hoping they return for relief opportunities.

13.01.2022 CELEBRATING OUR AWESOME EDUCATION ASSISTANTS (EAs) This week is Australian Teacher Aide Appreciation Week, acknowledging the importance, hard work and dedication these staff members make to their school community. At Sacred Heart, our EAs ensure that students are well cared for in the classrooms and their individual academic needs are met. These EAs may work in the Mary MacKillop Centre where they cater for students with special needs, or in Learning Support where they cater... for students with learning difficulties. They also attend classrooms and assist the teacher and whole class in general. In Home Economics, two staff members are available to organise and prepare the food items and assist students with following the recipes. Lets all extend a big THANK YOU to the EAs who have had such an impact on the education of so many Sacred Heart students throughout the years!

13.01.2022 At this morning's Whole School Assembly, we gathered to celebrate the achievements of our school in our Four Pillars and to congratulate our 2020 Captains on a great year of leadership. 09.01.2022 R U OK? Today is R U OK? Day, our national day of action when we remind Australians that every day is the day to ask, Are you OK? if someone in your world is struggling with lifes ups and downs. This morning, our Health and Wellbeing Committee members were in the Kiss 'n' Drive with TimeOut and Kit Kat bars, reminding students and parents to "take some time out to ask a mate if they are okay" or to "take a break" and have a chat. Our Fathers Day Breakfast attendees were also surprised with choccies and R U OK? reminders from students and staff. We are hoping our action on this day promotes awareness and acceptance for asking "are you OK?" and receiving a genuine response everyday, not just today. Photos from this morning's Fathers Day Breakfast will be available later today, as will photos from our Walkathon for R U OK? Day at lunch.

Today, the cardboard cut-out family warmly welcomed a new member Premier Mark McGowan. Chelsea Jones (Class of 2011) recently went viral for her music video about Mark McGowan that she posted on YouTube where she took this cardboard cut-out around Rockingham. Today, Chelsea and her director, producer and partner, Jarrod, decided to donate the cut-out to Mrs Reynders, Chelsea's Politics and Law Teacher. Thanks Chelsea and Jarrod - Premier McGowan is truly at home in this class!

08.01.2022 POSTCARD FROM THE KIMBERLEY MISSION TEAM "Just touching base from warm and balmy Broome (translation: hot and sweaty) with a Kimberley Mission update for you. We woke to the sounds of a magnificent Kimberley thunderstorm at 5:45am ! We have received an incredibly warm welcome here at the Broome Residential College (BRC); their Aboriginal students lined the entrances and shyly welcomed our students on arrival. Later at our briefing, the manager, Kristine Van, told our eager SH...C students to be patient as it could likely take a good number of days for her students to open up to our students' invitations to connect, as many of them are very trauma informed in their responses to others due to their difficult home circumstances. But the Holy Spirit was fast to work, and within 20 minutes our students were playing volleyball and basketball with the BRC students with the international language of fun and laughter bridging any perceived gaps in their lives. It would appear that the RNDM Charism that sets our students' compasses on a clear path to Compassion was intrinsically at work as they set about their afternoon of shared games and laughter. Dr Resta was self-appointed volleyball umpire and coach and was so dedicated to his one-on-one coaching of the BRC students that we had to drag him off the court for dinner! We were honoured and welcomed with a traditional smoking ceremony by local Broome elder, Jim (Ms Hunter's uncle). We are sharing afternoon tea, dinner and supper with the BRC students and if that’s all we achieve, we’ve done well. Our Head Boy and Head Girl have been exceptional in their organic leadership of the SHC students with their actions speaking louder than any words they could use. Kristine and her staff have worked hard to carve a lush green billabong out of the dust bowl they were given for this property. They have been generous in their accomodations for us and as grateful as we are that we are here with them. All of our students are boldly stepping out of their comfort zones and opening their hearts to the BRC students who are quietly opening up to share their stories of their families and where they come from. Today we are off to tour the Coastal Drive and spend a couple of hours at the History Museum. Here are some photos of us at Perth Airport for now! Sandra Manning and the Kimberley Mission Team."

08.01.2022 POSTCARD FROM THE KIMBERLEY MISSION TEAM Yesterday we invited the Broome Residental College (BRC) students to join us in painting the background layer of a shared mural using all of the warm colours of the Kimberley earth. We will complete the mural with the intention of splitting it up, so a piece of Sacred Heart can remain here in Broome and a piece of BRC can come back with us. We have also included some photos of us at the soup kitchen and playing games with our new BRC friends!

07.01.2022 POSTCARD FROM THE KIMBERLEY MISSION TEAM Last week we spent a morning visiting the Sisters of St John of God Cultural Heritage Centre where we were met by Sarah and Shirley who taught us about the history of Broome and the work of other sisters in Broome. Shirley told us her story about growing up in a community similar to Broome and how her vocation in life is to promote recognition and opportunity for Indigenous Australians within the Church. Today, we continued our education at the Kimberley Stolen Generation Aboriginal Corporation where we listened to the stories of individuals who were forcibly removed from their families around the Kimberley region. Their stories were incredibly profound and moved us all. Pictured is the inspirational Mrs Teresa Isaacs OAM, who has been recognised for her work in nursing and healthcare.

This group will be led by Head Boy, Ashley, and Head Girl, Olivia who were already announced a couple of weeks ago. We are excited to work with our 2021 Captains and the current Year 11 group as leaders of the College and thank the 2020 Captains for their dedication, effort and initiative through a very different year!

05.01.2022 THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS In recent Newsletters, our Young Vinnies student social justice group have been making appeals for donations of second hand bicycles. These donations were requested by not-for-profit organisation Dismantle in West Perth, who run a youth program called Bike Rescue which recycles bicycles as an engagement tool for disengaged youth. Bicycles are repaired, restored, accompanied with a helmet and padlock and then donated to charitable organisations, particularly at Christmas. Thanks to your donations, Nick, a representative from Dismantle, was delighted to collect 15 bicycles that were donated by our College community on Wednesday morning. These bicycles will put a smile on the face of so many children and families. THANK YOU!

04.01.2022 As we heard in our Finale... "Oh! What a night!" It was a pleasure to celebrate the achievement of our students in all Four Pillars during this very different year. For the first time ever, attendance was only compulsory for Year 7 students, Award winners, performers and 2021 Captains, but we know the rest of our community were there in spirit! Hopefully we are able to welcome our whole community to this event next year. Mr Lynch also announced the winners of the Concordia Sa...ncta (House Shield)... KIMBERLEY! Congratulations to not only our Award recipients, but ALL Sacred Heart students for approaching this year with Compassion, Courage and Respect and tackling all of the challenges that may have come our way throughout our 2020 journey. We hope you enjoy looking at some of the photos from our celebration of 2020!

03.01.2022 Our Year 9s have once again outdone themselves with a brilliant performance of The Blues Brothers in the RNDM Theatre on Friday night as part of the Year 9 and 10 Drama Showcase. Our Semester Two Musical Theatre students, assisted by Mrs Sodano and the RNDM Tech Crew, put hours upon hours into rehearsing their lines and perfecting their dance moves to great acclaim. Sophia Thirza (Year 8 Trinity) did a superb job photographing the best moments from the show which will be uploaded here soon!

01.01.2022 CANCER COUNCIL'S DAFFODIL DAY Today is Daffodil Day. The daffodil is recognised internationally as the symbol of hope for all people affected by cancer and was chosen as Cancer Council Australia's emblem as the bright yellow colouring heralds the return of spring, representing new life and growth. This morning in the Kiss 'n' Drive, our Vinnies students sold bunches of Daffodils for $10. Thanks to our supportive parent community and staff members, these sold out in record tim...e and raised some great funds. At recess, students were treated to a donut stall where a variety of donuts were sold for $3 each. Donuts will also be sold in the Kiss 'n' Drive this afternoon. EFTPOS facilities are available. We are honoured to be able to support the Cancer Council with their fundraising efforts towards this disease which unfortunately affects so many. THANK YOU!
