25.01.2022 WOAH: Our legendary Meals Program team has been preparing and handing out thousands of breakfast and lunch takeaway packs since the start of the pandemic Our healthy food packages are essential for many people in our community, including those who have lost their income due to COVID-19. To keep our community fed AND safe, our staff are sticking closely to COVID-19 restrictions and everyone is wearing PPE, including face shields which were kindly donated by our friends at T...OM: Melbourne A huge applause for our phenomenal staff - and a big thank you to our donor for helping us and our community to get safely through these times!

25.01.2022 We meet many wonderful, resilient and inspiring women at the Women’s House Many of them have lost their home because they had to flee from family violence - just like *Sam had to. She experienced several abusive relationships, in her childhood and as an adult. At the Women’s House she found the support and safety to secure herself a job and her own home.... Today, Sam says her experience has not made her a victim; it has made her strong and independent

25.01.2022 We let out some big cheers yesterday when we heard about the massive investments into affordable housing, mental health services, jobs and incentives for women reentering the workforce! It is all a part of the Victorian Government’s 2020-2021 Budget, which will help reduce poverty and disadvantage for our most vulnerable Well done to Dan Andrews and his government for creating one of the most progressive and inclusive budgets we have ever seen This is exactly what we... need now to recover economically and socially from the COVID-19 pandemic that has made life harder for many Victorians and pushed people further into poverty. What was your reaction when you heard about the Budget? Check out our website to find out more

21.01.2022 We didn’t imagine we would ever see 11,500 chocolates in one place - but now we have! We must thank Sean Breen and his community who donated several trolley loads of sweet deliciousness - as well as three leg hams, six turkeys and 100 bon bons - to our Meals Program and our Sacred Heart Community Our friend and long-term supporter Sean has been collecting and fundraising for Christmas and Easter chocolates from his friends for many years - but this festive season, he ...hit a new record! Join us as we send a big Christmas-y thank you to Sean and his friends At a time of the year when many people in our community might feel lonely, acts of kindness such as this one make our residents and clients feel valued and cared for. _________________ Conquer Finance #christmascharity #strongertogether #supportcharity #givebacktothecommunity #helpthoseinneed

20.01.2022 We’ve been celebrating Christmas Day with our community for almost 40 years. Providing festive meals to our clients has become a festive tradition we all look forward to throughout the year - and especially this year. ` As more people than ever encounter mounting bills, debt and poverty due to the pandemic and rely on our Meals Program, we don’t let COVID-19 stop us from serving around 5,000 meals this festive season! To keep everyone Covid-safe, we unfortunately cannot... invite our community into our Dining Hall this Christmas Day. Instead, our Meals Program team is pulling out all stops to make sure people will feel extra welcome by providing each of them a high-quality takeaway meal as well as a gift card so people have the choice to buy the items they need - be it food, clothing or maybe a gift for their child. While we are getting ready to make this Christmas extra special for our community and to end 2020 on a high note, we wish you a safe and peaceful festive season Thank you all for your ongoing support that makes a tremendous difference and changes so many lives

19.01.2022 *Fred has a home It’s a safe and secure place for him and for his daughter, who can now visit and stay with him. But this hasn’t always been the case. After his marriage broke down, Fred lost his job, his family and his home - until he visited our Dining Hall for a meal: It was incredible nobody was judgmental. It was a really safe space. There was no pressure to do anything. It really surprised me to get something for nothing, Fred remembers. During one of his next v...isits to our Dining Hall, Fred heard about our three-year Journey to Social Inclusion (J2SI) program; he applied and got accepted With the support from our J2SI workers, Fred soon moved into a private flat. When he brought his daughter to see the apartment he said: This is our new home. Fred’s journey out of homelessness was possible because of you and your ongoing support. Together with you, we can assist many more people who don’t have a home or who have lost their income during the pandemic. Please donate today and make a Christmas gift to the people in our community who need us more than ever before: https://www.sacredheartmission.org/donate

18.01.2022 The Women’s House is a space where women can feel safe and accepted; It’s where people who identify as women share a laugh and sometimes a cry; where they can talk freely about any difficulties they're experiencing or simply drop by to have a cuppa and a chat. While all of this can’t happen for now, during the pandemic, our Women’s House team is doing everything in their power to ensure our community is being looked after and feels that sense of belonging Our staff are gi...ving out food hampers, clothing and sanitary items as well as puzzles and mindful colouring kits. They also continue to offer crisis and housing support and in the last few days they’ve found long-term housing for four women - which is fantastic news! Three women will be able to move into public and social housing and one woman is going to move into a private rental All of these women were so happy to receive an offer which matched their preferred housing option, for example, the right neighbourhood, type of dwelling, and rent price, Cheyne, our Women’s House Coordinator, said. Congratulations to our Women’s House clients on their new homes - and to our team for this wonderful achievement

18.01.2022 Meet Hero and Jack, Sacred Heart Community's furriest team members Hero is a gentle and calm giant and the complete opposite to her best friend Jack who leaps around our home like a big pogo stick of joy Our doggos are taking their role of providing comfort and emotional support to our residents and staff very seriously - especially these days when we all have to practise physical distancing and might feel a lack of connection and belonging. Both dogs have developed ...special bonds with two wheelchair-bound residents, with Jack lightly jumping up onto one resident’s lap for cuddles, whilst Hero is the perfect height for resting her head on the other’s knee allowing our resident to fondly stroke her head. As different in character and looks as they are, between them, Hero and Jack have all bases covered and are an unstoppable - and unbelievably cute - team Don’t you agree?!

18.01.2022 I’m very happy; I wouldn’t be where I am today were it not for Sacred Heart Mission, Peter, a resident at our Sacred Heart Community, says. I would be with other tenants in insecure accommodation, battling with alcohol, cigarettes, addiction. Really, I would be struggling. Peter, who holds degrees in maths and science, is no stranger to adversity. After leaving politically unstable Botswana and relocating to Australia, he found himself without a home after a divorce. H...aving lived in various rooming houses across Melbourne, Peter one day visited our Dining Hall for a free meal and a shower. Through the connections he made with our support workers, he eventually got a referral to move into our Sacred Heart Community, where he now has a home for life - and the peace and privacy to write his memoirs. You can help us keep our doors open and assist many more people to achieve the life they want - by making a donation this Christmas https://bit.ly/donate-this-Christmas

17.01.2022 Have you heard about the Federal Budget our government announced earlier this week? What do you think about it? We think it leaves our most vulnerable out, with no big increase in income support or social housing We were hoping and advocating for the Federal Government to invest in social and affordable housing and to increase JobSeeker permanently. We know many of you did so too. But a golden opportunity has slipped away which would have helped solve Australia’s homelessne...ss crisis, lift three million people out of poverty and boost our economy. To prevent a new wave of poverty and homelessness, we must continue to advocate for long-term change to JobSeeker and for a massive investment in social housing. We are hopeful we can make this change together with you On today’s World Homelessness Day, share our Facebook updates with your friends and start a conversation. And during Anti-Poverty Week next week (11-17 October 2020), we will be shining a light on the three millions of Australians who are struggling to afford three meals a day and keep their homes. We will talk about how we can build a better Australia for all of us. #WorldHomelssnessDay #EverybodysHome #endhomelessness #antipovertyweek

16.01.2022 Every person, particularly at the latter stage of their life, shouldn’t have to worry about where they’ll sleep at night, Peter, our Property and Facilities Manager (pictured right), says He and his team-mate Kevin (pictured left) are part of a project group who have been working day in and day out for the past four years to provide people without a home a place to sleep - by increasing the number of beds in our new residential care building. On top of that, Peter and... Kevin and the many more people involved in our multimillion-dollar ‘Project 101’ are creating a whole ‘campus of care’ where our wide-ranging services will finally be combined under one roof; including independent living units, allied health services, a drop in centre for women and an administration centre. While work for our Project 101 was on track at the beginning of this year, our working group sadly had to put our project on hold for now, due to the pandemic. Our Board will review the situation in November and decide when and how we can resume our project. Just like the rest of us, Peter and Kevin can’t wait to recommence our building works and bring the biggest development in our history closer to completion! Once finished, Project 101 will provide a safe, secure home for over 100 people and the best level of care and support for people in our community who are experiencing homelessness and disadvantage A big thanks to Peter and Kevin and our Project 101 working group for keeping going despite the many challenges this year has thrown in their way - and to our wonderful supporters for backing this transformational project that will make such a big difference to our community.

15.01.2022 Our residents are remarkably resilient We feel, we’ve learnt from them this pandemic as they have taught us how to draw on a deep inner strength to keep going Like many of us, they too have felt the brunt of COVID-19 when activities they loved, like group art and gardening, were stopped due to restrictions. But our staff went above and beyond to modify resident’s favourite activities to keep people balanced We provide bricks, mortar, emotional support, heart and c...ommunity, where our residents have a beautiful, safe home for life even when the world is uncertain around them, Katie, Lifestyle Coordinator at our Sacred Heart Community, says This Social Inclusion Week, we’re shining a light on the many benefits of the importance of simple activities such as art that contribute to someone feeling socially included- something which underpins all of our services. Check out our blog for more and learn why a socially inclusive community is good for the soul AND the economy

14.01.2022 Do you live in rental housing? Can you see your breath indoors in winter? And does it get so hot in summer, you can’t get any sleep? You’re not alone: Renters across Australia are living in unhealthy homes - and it’s time to speak up: Share what’s unhealthy about your housing The Healthy Homes for Renters campaign is calling for minimum energy efficiency standards for all rentals. Because you and everyone else should have an affordable, healthy home. ... Add your voice at https://www.healthyhomes.org.au

13.01.2022 Being poor is not a choice. People can’t afford three meals a day or a roof over their heads, because they’re facing barriers that prevent them from participating in our social and economic life, such as health issues, trauma - or in *Sam’s case, many years of domestic violence. Sam, like many other people, was able to break through these barriers and restart her life after she engaged with our services. Our more than 20 programs and services such as the Women’s House all w...ork towards helping people escape the cycle of chronic homelessness and poverty to live the life they want. If you haven’t read Sam’s story yet, do it now http://bit.ly/Sams_story And if Sam’s tale inspires you to help change our community and tear down those barriers that keep millions of Australians trapped in poverty, there are two simple things you can do: 1. Join the Everybody's Home campaign and add your voice to the thousands of others who’re calling on the Federal Government to invest in social housing and end our housing crisis. 2. Back the nationwide Raise the Rate campaign to extend and increase JobSeeker and JobKeeper, the two lifelines that help Australians get through this crisis and out of a life in poverty.

13.01.2022 The pandemic has revealed how easy it is to fall into poverty. You can have a safe place to live and a steady job, but can suddenly lose it all or find yourself dangerously stuck in a violent relationship. That’s what happened to *Sam. After experiencing a series of abusive relationships as a child and adult, *Sam luckily escaped. She found a safe space and the support she needed to get back on her feet at the Women’s House Read Sam’s full story on our blog http://bit.l...y/Sams_story It’s a story of courage and resilience, based on an experience Sam shares with millions of Australians who are struggling to afford three meals a day and keep their homes - especially during this pandemic. But there is a way to change these millions of lives for the better: By extending and increasing JobSeeker and JobKeeper payments and boosting social housing our Federal Government can ensure everyone can afford to have a home. Experts across Australia say this is the right thing to do and it will be a win for all of us: For our people, Our job market, and Our economy. Share this post with your friends and take Anti-Poverty-Week as an opportunity to start a conversation about how we can fix our broken housing system and broken economy #antipovertyweek2020 #RaisetheRateforGood

12.01.2022 Op shopping online is becoming even more convenient from today, thanks to our new online op shop: https://shmonlineopshop.org Combining our eBay and Instagram stores into one platform, our online op shop features high-end designer clothes and accessories, vintage games and electronics as well as collectibles and antiques. While our 12 stores across Melbourne will need to stay closed for a little longer due to the Covid-19 restrictions, our new online store is the perfect a...lternative for you to go on a treasure hunt from your couch What’s even better: Every purchase you make supports our community and directly funds our services and programs, which is more important than ever now that we can’t raise any funds through our 12 shops. Our online op shop stars Sam and Carolyn have been busy bees setting up our new shopping platform within just a few weeks and uploading over 500 pre-loved items(!) - and they can’t wait for you to pop in and have a virtual stroll through the store. Don’t let them wait too long #opshop #opshopping #onlineshopping

12.01.2022 Barry is a ‘blokey bloke’ with a 'she'll be right' attitude, Annie, our Program and Partnerships Manager at GreenLight, describes one of our clients. But now that he has a bit of stability in his life, he can see things were not going well for him and he was 'just hangin' in there’. Barry hasn’t had a home for the past 10 years; the last two of them he spent sleeping rough in Melbourne’s CBD. Now being in his late 60s, he is also experiencing several physical health iss...ues; some of which are a result of sleeping on the street. Others are due to not being able to access the support he needs. When the pandemic hit Australia, Barry was one of many people sleeping rough who were moved into hotels as part of the government’s COVID-19 emergency response. This has been a blessing in disguise for Barry: Whilst emergency hotel accommodation is not the most appropriate, having a roof over his head and a warm bed, was a start. This also gave us the opportunity to connect with Barry through GreenLight Heart, a collaborative initiative by The Salvation Army Australia, VincentCare and us to move more than 300 people currently in hotels into housing. Supported by our team, Barry started attending a GP to get on top of his health issues. And what’s even better: Barry has just been accepted into our three-year Journey to Social Inclusion program(!) so he can continue to work on his personal goals with his new J2SI case manager - and finally find that safe and stable home he’s been looking for for so long.

12.01.2022 Our residents are an incredible bunch of people, Margaret, our Sacred Heart Community Manager, says They know about change. They know about things that aren't easy to live with. So during the pandemic it's a matter of just saying ‘ok, so we shall all live with this now and we'll make the changes,’. Margaret and her team are making sure everyone feels included and is comfortable with the changes they need to make to keep everyone safe: Every decision is run past the re...sidents before it's made, Margaret explains. If it's something that has to be made, I meet with the residents and say why we're doing this. This is just one of the many aspects that make our Sacred Heart Community a ‘home for life’ for our residents If you want to learn more about this special place, listen to the latest episode of the Igniting Change podcast where Margaret talks about her work, our residents and how they’re bonding together to get through this pandemic. We promise, you’ll be inspired! http://bit.ly/IgnitingChangePodcast

12.01.2022 UPDATE: Miguel has returned home! Thank you to everyone who supported our search for him and shared our message URGENT: Everyone, please share this post and help us find Miguel, our Sacred Heart Community resident. Miguel was last seen near the CBA Bank on Chapel Street, Prahran on Monday afternoon, 16 November where he was talking with a person he appeared to know. ... Miguel is 56 years old. He is approximately 162 cm tall and of average build. He is probably wearing blue jeans, sport shoes and a baseball cap, and he might be carrying a backpack. We are very worried about Miguel, because he may find it difficult to find his words and tell someone where he lives. If you see him, please call Margaret, our Sacred Heart Community Manager, at 046 6793 305. Please share as wide as possible, thank you

09.01.2022 Our team behind our Journey to Social Inclusion program is acing it once again - and we wouldn’t have expected anything else! Our staff have already housed 15 people since August, when the last round of our J2SI program started. What do you say about that?! We have just one word for this: brilliant The 15 people have been residing in hotels across Melbourne for some time as part of the Covid-19 response, Garry, our J2SI 3.3 Program Coordinator, explains. Now they have... their own safe, independent property and can start identifying personal goals to work on with their J2SI Case Managers over the next three years. To make this possible, our J2SI team has worked closely with Housing Choices Australia and Unison Housing. A big thank you to our friends from both organisations for their great support and for paving the path for people who have experienced chronic disadvantage to move forward and recreate their lives.

09.01.2022 We’ve seen a beautiful outpouring of generosity from our extraordinary community since the start of this pandemic Here’s another recent act of kindness that especially moved us: While working a student job at her dad’s funeral home, Ern Jensen Funerals, Caulfield Grammar School student Amelia attended a funeral for one of our Sacred Heart Community residents some time ago. Touched by this experience, she decided to donate $250 - all that she earned through her job - toward...s our Meals Program so that Matthew (pictured) and the rest of our team can continue to prepare and serve up to 400 meals a day Isn’t this one of the most beautiful gestures you’ve heard of?! If you would like to join Amelia and hundreds of others who are changing lives through their support, please make a gift today: https://www.sacredheartmission.org/donate People without a home need us by their side, now more than ever

08.01.2022 Like our fellow friends in Melbourne, our Sacred Heart Community residents have missed their usual freedoms during stage four lockdown. Liberties such as strolling down the street to pick up a sweet treat have not been possible. Step in Simon from our Life Matters team - he has opened an in-house "milk bar" tuck shop to bring a little bit of sweetness into our residents’ lives This act of kindness lifted our hearts - and we hope yours too. If you want to show your support to our resourceful team and our residents, please give them a thumbs up and send us some virtual hearts

08.01.2022 136,000! That’s how many meals Kirsty (pictured) and our Dining Hall team have prepared and served over the past 12 months, from July 2019 to June 2020 Even during Melbourne’s lockdown, our team has cooked up a storm and provided hundreds of people with hearty, nutritious takeaway meals - every single day But our passionate and resilient team does far more than feed our community; they also provide opportunities for people to reconnect and develop a sense of community and belonging - and what would be more important than that in these times of physical distancing!? Please join in on our massive applause for our incredible Dining Hall team and the difference they make in our community - 365 days a year

08.01.2022 Could you live without the internet? While it can boost our wellbeing to spend some time away from our devices, being able to go online is crucial to access information, to connect with loved ones in our times of physical distancing, and in short, to fully participate in life To make sure our clients have access to our digital world, our Journey to Social Inclusion team has partnered with WombleTech to provide 20 iPads for telehealth sessions, staying connected with lov...ed ones and other online appointments Digital inclusion in this day and age is an important stepping stone for people to achieve the life they want to live especially after having experienced homelessness and trauma. Read our blog this Social Inclusion Week to find out how we’re promoting social inclusion through our all our services - and why it’s key for ending homelessness: https://bit.ly/SocialInclusionWeek2020

04.01.2022 Moving towards a world where there is no fear in living in the truth of who you are, is what movements like Wear it Purple are seeking, and what our work at SHM is striving for, our Case Manager Tessa says. She and other staff across the Mission have donned their purple outfits to celebrate today’s 10th anniversary of ‘Wear it Purple Day’ Read Tessa’s article to find out why this cause sits at the core of everything we do, and put on your purple shirts, PJs or hats - ...so we can join forces and say with one voice to all people who identify with the LGBTIQA+ community: We support you, we love you, we celebrate you for who you are. http://bit.ly/WearItPurple_SHM #Wearitpurple #wearitpurpleday #loudandproud #lgbtiqaplus #diversityandinclusion

04.01.2022 Who would have thought 2020 would be the year our community takes to their sewing machines to support our people!? One of our sewing champions is volunteer Terry who’s been with us for almost 12 years. While Terry isn’t doing her fortnightly Dining Hall shifts, she is creating handmade face masks for our staff and clients. Also sewing up a storm for us is Harriet, the mum to our CEO Cathy. She mailed us 100 reusable masks from Ballarat In return, we’re sending a warm virtual hug to Terry and Harriet and everyone else who’s helping to keep our community safe - and for adding a bit of colour to our Covid-lives and faces

03.01.2022 All our clients are eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine This includes Victorians who are experiencing homelessness, people in social housing, crisis accommodations and rooming houses. 02.01.2022 His ‘on point’ banter, his infectious humour and his empathy for those around him, make our op shop volunteer Callan a Mission Champion - and a much-loved part of our op shop tribe We can’t wait to share a good joke with him soon when we’ll be able to reopen our stores. In the meantime, you can catch a glimpse of Callan’s warm personality on our blog, where he also shares how volunteering at our store has helped him overcome social anxiety and smash any stigmas he has experienced while living with autism. 01.01.2022 We are still celebrating THAT historic moment when the State Government announced a $5.3 billion investment in social and affordable housing(!!!) earlier this week. Because it will change lives This means 12,000 more households in Victoria will have access to a home We have never seen a big housing investment on this scale in our state before. After a challenging year, this is the best news we could have hoped for, especially for the people in our community who do not h...ave a home. Congratulations to the Victorian Government for doing the right thing And a big THANK YOU to you! Thousands of you have supported the Everybody's Home campaign and called on our government to build more social housing. You have raised your voice on social media, signed petitions and talked about solutions for our homelessness crisis with your friends, families and neighbours - and it worked! This great result shows the power of advocacy in action You can all be proud of your efforts to help us end homelessness Check out our website to learn more about the government’s social housing investment

01.01.2022 There’s a simple solution: Build more public housing, Australia! While the Victorian Government has finally responded to our joint call and launched their #BigHousingBuild to boost social housing, we still need to see action from the Federal Government - because everyone needs an affordable and safe home!
