24.01.2022 HAPPY 5 YEAR ADOPTAVERSARY TO ZAC! Some of you may remember Zac, a 10 year old Golden Retriever who we rescued from the pound 5 years ago. He was suffering from painful hot spots (as shown in the first photo). After being in foster care for several months and receiving the medical treatment he desperately needed, Zac was adopted by a couple in Perth (5 years ago yesterday!) who have showered Zac with all the love and care he truly deserves. He really did go from r...ags to riches! Below is an update on Zac from his pawrents along with a photo: "Our darling Zac is still doing wonderfully well. It has been five years of joy for us, he is a wonderful dog and we adore him. As he has been from the first day, he is loving, gentle and friendly to everyone he meets. He is still interested in everything and everyone, insists on going on his twice daily plod around the streets and is very enthusiastic about his food! He barks rather loudly if its after 5:00pm and he hasnt been fed - or if we get distracted in the mornings and his breakfast is late! Hes also hilarious in the morning as he will only go one way on his walk - which leads to the local coffee shop where he gets a biscuit from the proprietor and any of his many fans who happen to be there at the same time. He looks pleadingly at them and they cant refuse him. If we attempt to go left instead of right at the bottom of our driveway he refuses to budge! He is on a raw diet and cocktail of supplements (including Chinese herbs) to keep him healthy and mobile. He has slowed down quite a bit but we believe, and the vet agrees, that he is moving without obvious pain. He still has regular acupuncture and massages both of which he seems to enjoy. When we adopted Zac we hoped that he would have at least 5 years with us so that the last third of his life would be full of love, he would be adored and receive the best veterinary care possible. We are so grateful and happy that this has been the case. We will always be grateful to the marvellous people at SAFE Busselton for entrusting this beautiful dog to us, he has enriched our lives immeasurably".

19.01.2022 We cannot stress enough the dangers of buying puppies (or kittens) online! The majority of these animals come from unethical breeders where the parents of these animals are kept locked up for their entire lives, in horrendous conditions and used purely as breeding machines for human financial greed ___________ Midland Police are warning members of the public to be wary when purchasing puppies from online advertisements after two recent cases highlighted fraudulent claims ...by the seller. In one case a man purchased a Labrador - Rottweiler cross from an online site. The seller fraudulently provided a false Responsible, Professional Breeders Association number and stated the puppy was microchipped. The seller also stated he was a breeder from Goomalling. DNA testing on the puppy revealed the puppy did not have any Labrador or Rottweiler heritage and was a mix of five difference breeds including Kelpie, Ridgeback and American Staffy. The puppy was purchased for $2,500! In the second case a woman purchased an Australian Shepherd Labrador cross puppy and the seller advertised online the puppy was 9 weeks old, vaccinated and microchipped. The owner took the puppy to the vet who ascertained the puppy was only 6 weeks old and was malnourished and likely came from a puppy farm and not a responsible breeder. In both instances the people paid thousands in cash for their puppies. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperswa.com.au

15.01.2022 "This was the FIRST TIME I've had the opportunity to learn more about being a cat owner!" This feedback from one happy cat owner after GeoCatch’s inaugural Kitty Cat School last week. Cat owners learnt about cat health, emotional needs and behaviour, as well as how to be responsible pet owners. In fact, almost everyone said they were now more likely to keep their cats inside because they knew the benefits for their cat, their hip pocket and local wildlife. One lucky participant even took home their very own catio! This event was a partnership with City of Busselton - Local Government, Busselton Veterinary Hospital, Vasse Vets, Murdoch University, Katzone Cat Enclosures and SAFE Busselton, supported by South West Catchments Council (SWCC) and National Landcare Program. Thanks to everyone for making this a wonderful event!

Milo now enjoys long daily walks on the beach and although he still goes to work, with his new family his job is to be patted by their clients and lay around looking handsome. Just goes to show, sometimes matching the dog to the right environment isnt as obvious as it might seem. Were grateful to Milos new furmily for giving him the job hes always wanted

05.01.2022 WARNING! As many households prepare their gardens for spring, there has been a significant increase in calls to the Animal Poisons Helpline regarding fertiliser ingestion. Fertilisers are available in a diverse range of formulations. Inorganic fertilisers tend to contain varying but generally high quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; as well as trace elements which are tailored to suit specific purposes. Whilst a small lick or taste is unlikely to cause si...gnificant poisoning, large ingestions can potentially result in severe effects. Organic fertilisers contain lower concentrations of these minerals. They are often made of different types of manures, blood, bone and other meals and as such are highly attractive to dogs. If dogs are allowed access to organic fertiliser packaging, it is not unusual for them to ingest very large quantities. Ingestion of organic fertilisers can result in severe gastroenteritis, possibly pancreatitis and gastrointestinal obstruction. As you prepare your garden for the warmer months ahead, take a moment to consider your pets: Never allow pets access to fertiliser containers or packaging. Keep in mind that dogs find organic fertilisers highly appetizing and will readily chew through packaging, so they need to be stored out of reach. Apply fertiliser as per the manufacturers recommendations (do not use excessive amounts) Water in fertiliser after application where possible - this is especially true for areas with chickens since they are very effective at picking up granules that have dropped to lower soil areas Avoid using organic fertiliser around spring bulbs (dogs will dig up the organic fertiliser and will often find these bulbs and eat them!) If you think your pet has ingested fertiliser, call 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for a tailored risk assessment and recommendation, including first aid measures. This service is free for all pet owners and has assisted over 5,000 accidentally poisoned pets so far this year. You can save a pets life by keeping this critical service free. Please visit animalpoisons.com.au/support to learn about ways you can support the service.
