08.05.2022 Next step in the resurection of the Lappy, is the new battery! This did arrive a little while ago but to be honest, these posts are being done in spurts around the other activities of the business. So, I unpacked the new battery and gave it a bit of insepction. Well, as much as you can without busting it open! With the exception of labeling and an extra 100Ah (4400 compared to the old 4300) it's an exact copy of the OEM battery. This is not surprising. With our knowledge of manufactuing, to acheive this, we would have found the OEM's contractor and order a batch to specification. The hard bit is finding that contractor! Next post, we'll fire up the Lappy on the battery abd see if it's running bug free.

25.04.2022 Back again and I've de-soldered the connections form the power management board and the batteries. At this point, the idea of replacing the batteries is dead and burried for prarical reasons. The most practical being the spot-welded series connections on the batteries. I have no way of doing this, and it needs to be done as it's critical for reducing resistance, reliability and fitting the battery pack back into the housing. If I realy look hard, I'm sure I can find somewhere this can be done but the reality is that at around $60 for the batteries alone, I'm already well over the $38 cost of the replacement battery pack, and this is without taking into account the time and expense of getting the batteries spot welded. Watch for a post on ethical battery disposal! And see what happens next with the Laptop.

08.04.2022 After doing a simple google search on "replace dead cells in a laptop battery", I got a lot of returns. It appears to be a reasonably simple task involving some soldering, but there are some concerns. One of these is the control board that you can see in this image. I have no way to test that this is funtioning correctly, but according to the articles, I searched, it's pretty rare for this to fail. This boeard controls the charghing and discharge of the battery as well as monitoring battery temp. Those are the brown ribbon wires you can see in the pics.

21.03.2022 Hi Guys, we're one the first leg of refurbsihing the Toshiba battery pack and I'm going to open it up first and see what cells are in it, or if it's a conformal battery type. It's a bit "Schroedingers Cat" as until I know what's in it, I don't know if I can do anything about it! With a bit of torsonal twisting, I opened the battery case and it's got 6 x 18650 cells in it! How unusual.... :-) Next step is to search out some more info about what I can and can't do here.

23.01.2022 Went a bit "Marie Kondo" over the NY weekend, mostly at the wife's insistance and found I still had my old Toshiba laptop. I have a real issue with just generating E-Waste but I know it's a 20 year old lappy with a dead battery. Still, maybe I can get it running and re-purpose it, even for some DOS games. Thinknig that old tech is an issue for all of us, lets take a journey together over the next few weeks and we'll see what we can do with this.

21.01.2022 Rest day today, however last night the medics saved a Joey from it’s dead mother and cute little Leo is now with WIRES and going to lead a happy life!

19.01.2022 Well, I put the Toshiba on charge and..... nothing. Battery is dead. Well, as dead as I can determine without and testing tools. It won't hold a charge, or even power up the laptop. So I have ordered a new one from Better Battery in Melbourne. Below is the old battery, which would normally be disposed of. Properly. But I want to see if I can replace the dead cells, and how easy that might be. Stay Tuned!

01.01.2022 Nice and dry today, not too hot and having a little break before dropping another tree. These people lost their sheds but just saved the house. Their pine plantation is gone. There’s another half km of pine behind this, totally burnt. Worth nothing now.

01.01.2022 Just a quick note to say the Safecell website is back up and running after a glitch. Our appologies for this "techincal" delay. I wish I had a copy of the screen they use to show when your telly station had a problem!
