23.01.2022 SO tell us where you will be partying on Australia Day???

23.01.2022 Hotel's clean behaviour earns police recognition POLICE chief nominates publican for award - for Manly police local area commander Supt Dave Darcy, its something he never thought hed ever hear of, let alone do. There is a saying, as rare as hens teeth, Supt Darcy told the Daily.... For a commander of 30 years experience to nominate a licensee for a community service award, you wont see that too often. I would suggest its never happened. Yet such has been the drop in alcohol-related violence at the Steyne Hotel in recent years, Supt Darcy thought it appropriate. From three assaults on a weekend to the pub dropping down the blacklist of violent venues, the hotel has changed its culture. Supt Darcy congratulated licensee Gerard Dore at the Rotary Club of Manly Sunrises Community Service Awards last week. He recalled Mr Dores vow to clean the place up after John Singletons group bought the venue in 2010. Now Id heard that 100 times before from people like Gerard, Supt Darcy said. But from day one, he did what he said hed do. Mr Dore realised the Steyne was the last venue to crack down on violence in the wider push to improve Manlys image. You had to take the hotel back to what it was originally for: sport, punting, saloon bar and dining. Before, they had one night where they were busy, he said. Community fundraisers were also a part in making the Steyne friendly again, according to Mr Dore, though he said incidents would still happen. - STEYNE Hotel licensee Gerard Dore said part of the venues success in reducing violence was changing the culture of how it dealt with patrons. ``We may ask 200 people to leave or have their last drinks on a night, but instead of `listen, youve had enough, go; we found if youre reasonably respectful to people, they know when theyve had enough. Its about communication. LINK: http://manly-daily.whereilive.com.au//hotels-clean-behavi/

09.01.2022 Manly now the role model of reinvention for Kings Cross Nicole Hasham April 25, 2012 Read later... Family friendly ... Clover Egbert, her father, Dan, and Anne Lovely at the Steyne Hotel. Photo: Sahlan Hayes GONE are the sequins and brawn, the thumping house music and the weekly glassings. These days the Steyne Hotel, once Manly's most violent venue, is a reformed offender. Boutique beers and a cider bar have replaced 2am vodka shots and the sleazy Booty Bar. Kids and 70-somethings line up at dinnertime for barramundi and chips, and a Chinese restaurant and rooftop cocktail bar are on the way. "We've gone away from a nightclub approach on Saturday nights to a more diverse pub approach with food, sport and entertainment," the publican, Ged Dore, said. Advertisement: Story continues below While violence could never be eliminated, there were ''less aggressive incidents happening now - more pushes and shoves", he said. Manly and the Steyne Hotel have emerged as a model of reinvention amid a demand by the Wentworth MP, Malcolm Turnbull, for a crackdown on alcohol-related violence in Kings Cross. Yesterday, Mr Turnbull described Kings Cross as a "war zone" on Saturday nights and called on the state government to impose tighter licensing restrictions. "It is outrageous what goes on there the degree of violence from people that are totally liquored up and drugged up," he said on ABC radio. "[The Premier] Barry O'Farrell needs to do more to support the police and support the community in that area. Should we be having licensed premises going right through til dawn and past dawn?" Three years ago, that description could have applied to Manly when glassings and booze-fuelled brawls were de rigueur on Friday and Saturday nights. The Steyne was a major culprit, responsible for 45 per cent of all alcohol-related assaults in the area, Superintendent David Darcy of the Manly police said. "The Steyne had a reputation as the place to go if you wanted to get punched in the face or glassed. Virtually overnight, it went from a bloodbath to a safe country pub," he said. Together with the Steyne's new business model, shorter trading hours at major venues and a ban on late-night high-alcohol drinks have been key to improvements at Manly, Supt Darcy said. Alcohol-related assaults in the council area have fallen by more than 2 per cent each year since 2007. But, as the Steyne dropped off the state's latest violent venues list, the nearby Shore Club, took its place, signalling the effort is far from done. The chief executive of the Kings Cross Licensing Accord Association, Doug Grand, said Kings Cross experienced far higher, more concentrated numbers of revellers than Manly, and did not hold the same day-time appeal. He called for greater police numbers and better transport options in Kings Cross. Read more: http://www.smh.com.au//manly-now-the-role-model-of-reinven
