25.01.2022 This is a great initiative and one that I had privilege of receiving when an undergraduate studying OHS Science. It helped me to network and meet HSE leaders and learn from the real world experience of others. Being a member has led to so many growth and career opportunities for me. #Studentmembership

22.01.2022 DON’T MASK THE PROBLEM Since COVID-19, our market has been flooded with more than 100 million respirators of different types & standards. Among the suitable products are fake, faulty, counterfeit & sub-standard products. Most people make an assumption that if they find a face mask for sale in Australia, that it has been assessed & met a standard. This is not true. The dangers of unapproved respirators extend beyond COVID-19. We had major problems during last season’s bushfir...es, as well as the cases of black lung & silicosis which caused workplace deaths. I’m concerned the flood of new products onto the market, including fake & non-conforming masks, people may wear these in other workplace environments with a false sense of protection. Today as part of a coalition we launched Guide to Buying P2, or Equivalent, Respirators for use in the Australian & New Zealand Work Environment. So I call to action all OHS professionals & practitioners working in companies to speak with your purchasing / procurement managers about this issue. I call out to all OHS consultants to make contact with your clients to ensure they are purchasing reputable products. For the sake of a few dollars, don’t let someone’s health be harmed by a dodgy or ill-fitting mask. #dontmasktheproblem

09.01.2022 WHSQ is conducting compliance audits in the formwork sector of the construction industry. WHY? Because formwork incidents involving the collapse or failure of formwork systems and components can have serious consequences. Several formwork incidents this year have highlighted the need for improvements in the safe construction and use of formwork systems.... WHAT DO THEY LOOK FOR? Stage one will be a desktop audit focussing on formwork documentation. Stage two will be an audit of the formwork structure and verifying the documented formwork systems. This will include the inspection of erected formwork systems and safe work practices. The audits will assess compliance with the Formwork Code of Practice 2016. WHO IS BEING TARGETED? This is a state-wide campaign targeting employers whose business involves formwork construction activities, formwork designers and engineers, formwork contractors and principal contractors. HOW DO YOU PREPARE? You should review your work practices to ensure your workplace complies with the Formwork Code of Practice 2016. https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au//formwork-industry-complia

04.01.2022 Health care standards failing to protect frontline health care workers. Australia’s National Guidance on PPE use in hospitals does not require staff to wear P2/N95’s masks in all activities with confirmed or potential COVID-19 patients, even though it is an airborne virus. Surgical masks are not designed to protect the wearer against airborne transmission. 04.01.2022 Great to learn about the innovative initiatives people are delivering in their workplaces.
