08.01.2022 Those responsible for the finances of small to medium sized businesses and clubs in South Australia need to be alert for scammers, police have warned. During 20...18 SA Police have had steady reports of businesses and clubs being targeted in Business Email Compromise Scams. While the exact methodology can vary, these scams generally involve the people responsible for payment of accounts being notified that the banking details for a supplier or other business have changed. The advice generally via a very credible looking email supplies new banking details, into which payments are to be made. Unfortunately these bank accounts are usually only a holding account, with the money quickly transferred off-shore to scammers. Often a victim only becomes aware they have been scammed when contacted by the other company regarding the outstanding debt. Reports to SA Police this year show that tens of thousands of dollars have been stolen via this type of scam. In some cases companies have managed to stop the transfer of funds, but in others money has been lost, potentially having a significant impact on the victim. Businesses and clubs that have been targeted have included legal firms, conveyancing business, market gardeners, tradies, wineries and sporting clubs, but anyone dealing with a large number of transactions involving significant sums of money could be vulnerable. For further information visit www.scamwatch.gov.au or to report a cybercrime and online incidents which may be in breach of Australian Law this can be done through the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) http://www.acorn.gov.au - certain reports will then be directed to Australian Law enforcement and government agencies for further investigation.
