Huge thanks to all of our friends at Gold Coast State Emergency Service - SES Rosies - Friends On The Street Gold Coast Youth Service Red Frogs Australia

23.01.2022 Almost everything will work again when you unplug it including your teen. Encourage your young person to have a breather this weekend and disconnect from everything digital. Let's be honest, a whole weekend may be unachievable but at least half a day can make a difference.

23.01.2022 It’s currently unclear whether the 2020 Safer Schoolies Gold Coast Response will go ahead as per previous years. We may not be able to deliver the dedicated alcohol and drug-free Schoolies Hub on the beach or provide our normal level of on the ground support. It’s important you stay on top of the Queensland Government’s latest advice to help you decide whether Schoolies 2020 is safe for your teen. ... For official Schoolies 2020 updates, make sure you're signed up to our Parents newsletter https://bit.ly/2scp4ZA . Don't forget to tag your fellow parent friends to make sure they're following our page too.

21.01.2022 Just in case you need some justification

19.01.2022 Has your teen actually stopped to think about how they feel about celebrating at Schoolies this year? Are they getting swept up in the excitement of their peers and feeling pressured that they have to go because that's what all Year 12's do? Remind your teen that everyone's circumstances are different and only they can decide on what makes them (and you) feel comfortable. Celebrating Schoolies during a global pandemic may not be right for your teen (or you)... and that's okay!

19.01.2022 The best thing about school leaver holidays is spending time with friends. Tag your teen to remind them to value their friendships and check in on their mates.

19.01.2022 During the pandemic, our mental health and wellbeing is at an increased risk as we face a range of new stressors including job losses, separation from loved ones or even restrictions on our normal freedom. Taking some ‘me time’ is important to help strengthen your mental wellbeing. It lifts your mood, helps you get through difficult situations and let's you make the most out of life.... For simple ‘me time’ ideas visit the Your Mental Wellbeing website www.qld.gov.au/mentalwellbeing

18.01.2022 With final booking payments nearly due, deciding whether going away with friends is the right thing to do this year is a huge decision for your teen. Remind them to stay true to themselves, stick to their choices and what’s right for them at this point in time. Whilst FOMO is a real thing, it's important they don’t do something they're uncomfortable doing just because they think everyone else is.

18.01.2022 Is your teen wanting a Schoolies accommodation refund? Make sure they check out the below first. If they believe they’re entitled to a refund but haven’t been able to resolve the matter with their accommodation booking agent, they can lodge an official complaint with the Office of Fair Trading via www.qld.gov.au/fairtrading .

18.01.2022 Did you know? Providing your teen with homemade meals is a sure-fire way they will eat healthy, save money and enjoy the comforts of home whilst away. With school leavers encouraged to celebrate close to home, this might be something you can easily arrange for your teen - you might even find them popping home at dinner time!

18.01.2022 The SchooliesGC Facebook page is not monitored after midnight but help is still available. In an emergency, don't risk it always call Triple Zero (000). Other helpful contacts available 24/7 include:... Policelink (131 444) Red Frogs Hotline (1300 557 123) and Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800).

15.01.2022 Sticking together is a sure way to stay safe when out and about. Remind your teen about safety in numbers and to never leave a friend on their own https://bit.ly/2XbeROG

14.01.2022 How man's best friend is helping people during the pandemic https://ab.co/3gJceJn A good article but an even better chance to see some cute dogs in our feed - feel free to share pics of your beloved pooch below (it could make someone smile).

13.01.2022 It may be late on R U OK? Day but it’s never too late to check in with your teen to see if they’re okay. But what if they tell you they're not OK? What next? Helpful advice below to help you keep the conversation going with your teen.... It’s especially important to keep the conversation going in the lead up to, and during, Schoolies as it's often a time of considerable change and uncertainty for your teen - not to mention a global pandemic thrown in too. http://ow.ly/qjIq50BmKei

12.01.2022 Whilst not mandatory, if you find yourself in a situation where you have to wear a mask, make sure you treat your mask like your undies. http://ow.ly/P5KB50AS6Ev

11.01.2022 Your teen's emotional wellbeing is so important, especially now with so much uncertainty surrounding their final year of schooling. Encourage them to look, listen, talk and seek help if they need it. Stay focussed on the here and now. Prioritise their health even more by fuelling their body with good food, movement and sunshine. ... There is no 'right' way to feel in these current times and it's okay to not be okay. And parents, make sure you're looking after YOU also!

11.01.2022 Drug convictions can affect employment opportunities and your teen's ability to travel overseas. Drugs are simply not worth the risk. It's important to remember that drugs are illegal. If your teen is in possession of an illicit substance, it is an offence. If they are caught committing this offence, they will be dealt with under the criminal justice system. ... Don't let one silly mistake ruin their future.

11.01.2022 Bystanders are people who witness an action or event like bullying or sexual harassment. Bystanders have choices - stay silent and ultimately support and condone the bad behaviour, or call it out (if safe to do so) and be part of the solution. Speaking out against something your teen doesn't agree with is not the easiest thing to do (especially if they're standing up to their mates). ... Have the chat about bystander behaviour with your teen. Encourage them to call it out and not let bad behaviour slide.

10.01.2022 Keep yourself and others safe this festive season always have your #LiftLegend sorted before your first sip.

Whether it's consent, attitudes or values, start the conversation with your teen today.... https://youtu.be/jPnJk6w0bOQ

07.01.2022 Whether it be about pornography, sexting or cyberbullying, it’s important that we talk to our teens about what can often be seen as the ‘awkward’ subjects.

07.01.2022 Remember, there is always a choice. Tag your teen to remind them it takes the bigger person to walk away from a fight https://bit.ly/39uIf5i

07.01.2022 Know a parent with a teen in Year 11? Why not tag them below so that we can help prepare them and their teen for a safe Schoolies in 2020.

06.01.2022 Important information for any young people that were planning on celebrating their end of schooling in Airlie Beach this year. The Whitsunday Schoolies Safety Response has been cancelled.

05.01.2022 If your teen is choosing to celebrate Schoolies, encourage them to brush up on their sun and surf safety skills today. Water and alcohol don’t mix - alcohol is a factor in 1 in 5 drownings. Always wise to stay out of the water (including the ocean, pools and spas) when drinking or taking drugs. Swimming at night, whether it is at the beach or in a swimming pool, can be dangerous. Lifeguards are not on duty and help may not arrive until it is too late.... Remember to slip, slop, slap and seek shade - especially if drinking as the effects of alcohol increase after prolonged periods in the sun.

05.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? Some apartments won't allow your teen to have any visitors. Additional to COVID restrictions, Schoolies accommodation bookings will come with a set of accommodation House Rules. ... If your teen chooses to celebrate, make sure they (and all their mates) read their House Rules BEFORE they check in to avoid any nasty surprises - or possible eviction.

01.01.2022 Have you talked with your teen about what Schoolies on the Gold Coast will really look like this year? With the Schoolies Hub on the beach not going ahead and restrictions around gatherings being in place, Schoolies will not be happening as it has in previous years. Not to mention accommodation house rules that may prevent teens having anyone back to their apartments. ... The reality is, this year may not live up to any great expectations.
