22.01.2022 The Skateboard Industry, the proverbial frog in warm water. When I began SaferSkate, I thought it was just about making skateboarding safer, for children starting, and adults returning to this fun sport, and for the first time, possible for adults who have never skated before to learn. But, as time has passed, I have made observations, and studied statistics and other data relating to skateboarding, and have come to the realisation that skateboarding itself is in trouble.... I have found figures that indicate that for more than a decade now, sales of skateboards have been in steady decline at a rate of about 2% annually. Probably not significant enough for insiders to notice among regular fluctuations that occur in retailing for any number of reasons. Enough however to have one analyst I have read, predicting that if the trend continues over the next decade, skateboarding could fade into obscurity. Along with this information however, is a gem that has apparently been lost on the industry. Of all the people in a given year, who say that they have "stepped on a skateboard", only 20% go on to continue to learn to ride, and become what are classed as "core skaters". This means that the skateboard industry is missing out on 80% of the total potential market. And to me more significantly, 80% of people who are interested in skateboarding. One of the biggest reasons given, the dangerous nature of skateboarding. Add to this my own observation that many of the people involved in skateboard sales are skaters, and have possibly never encountered, or really understand the difficulties faced by the 80%, and the problem becomes more clear. I love skateboarding, I have since I bought my own first primitive board in the 70's and made my own ply deck to replace the chunk of timber that it came wit standard. So I now have a greater sense of purpose as I plod away slowly, board by board, set of bearings by set of bearings, and enjoying seeing people who may otherwise never have, feel the thrill of skateboarding. And knowing that every child who is given a board with my bearings is not only almost guaranteed of success, but is also much safer on their board as well. #skateboard #longboard #skateboarding #longboarding #pennyskateboards #sectornine #zflex #globe

11.01.2022 Liability waivers, indemnities and duty of care If you are a person responsible for putting another, particularly a child, onto a skateboard, make sure you fully understand your responsibilities under duty of care, including provision of the safest equipment suitable and properly maintained, a waiver or indemnity may not be worth the paper it's written on if you have not explained that there is a safer alternative to that which you are offering, and the person understands to the level required to accept the risk. I found one reference in the link below: https://www.smithslawyers.com.au//liability-waivers-are-yo
