25.01.2022 There are questions around about the warnings for tomorrow. Q. What does catastrophic mean? A. The main point around these conditions is that if fires do occur,... the only predictable thing about their behaviour is that they will be UNPREDICTABLE and more than likely UNSTOPPABLE. Q. But there are no fires currently? A. Correct, across the greater Shoalhaven, Illawarra and Sydney regions there is no fires of concern at this stage (1 reported around Bulli at 6pm and 1 in the blue mountains), however just because there is nothing right now it doesnt take much for one to start and with the conditions forecast the first Q/A above suggests the warnings are justified. Q. How is the rating determined A. Science... But seriously, Temp, Humidity, Wind all go in to the rating but other things like Ground Moisture, Fuel Loads & forecasts of changing conditions (in our case a strong southerly buster that will temporarily make things worse if fires are about) are all taken in to account. A catastrophic rating is not given lightly and as weve seen last week even extreme ratings that the Mid North Coast experienced over the weekend were devastating. Q. Should I go to work? A. We cant make that decision for you but assess where you live, where you work, where you drive and the expected conditions and if you have any red flags then make an informed decision. If you do go to work and need to leave, leave sooner rather than later. Note: where the fire level is at Catastrophic there is NO stay at home and defend option... If your are told to leave then do so immediately. Q. I live in the urban interface, Ive got a fire plan & have already enacted it. A. Bloody brilliant. Being Pro active is always better than reactive but if fires do occur and they do become uncontrollable then leave early. Your garden hose wont be sufficient. Lastly, if fires do occur then remember, Buildings can be replaced, lives can not. See my post from earlier below giving some advice on reliable sources of information.
