23.01.2022 Currently training on the FlexDex, a new revolutionary tool designed to overcome the limitations of traditional laparoscopic devices. It offers the same advantages of the robotic surgical system, but at a fraction of the price. Another very important advantage is that the surgeon doesn't loose the haptic feedback. This innovative and intuitive system will be soon readily available to every hospital limited with tight financial budgets.

18.01.2022 Another FlexDex training session, but this time combined with the latest 3D camera system from Olympus. Now waiting for TGA approval of the FlexDex device here in Australia and looking forward to my very first "Surgeon Powered Robotics" surgical case!
16.01.2022 Prof Christophe Berney Co-Chair - DAISI GPO Box 4488 SYDNEY, 2001, [email protected] 25th Nov 2019... To whom it may concern, I would like to appeal to you for assistance in supporting much needed surgical trips to the South Pacific. As Co-Chair of DAISI, I and twenty-six other surgeons from Australia and New Zealand regularly travel to islands in the South-Pacific, such as Vanuatu, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, to perform urgently needed major surgical procedures and cancer surgery. This service otherwise is simply not available. With all surgeons and specialists covering the cost of their own flights, accommodation and working voluntarily, and with several scheduled trips per year, as you can imagine this represents quite a significant financial burden to all our volunteers. Up until now, there has been no funding provided by the Government DAISI (Doctors Assisting in South-Pacific Islands) is a not for profit, non-government tax-deductible charity registered with the Australian Taxation Office (ID: 51769931239), with all donors receiving a tax-deductible receipt. I therefore appeal to you to kindly consider sponsoring a surgeon and/or anaesthetist on future surgical trips to the South Pacific to assist with urgent major surgical procedures and cancer surgery. Please be assured that your donation will not only facilitate essential surgeries but also allow us to educate and train local healthcare professionals to assist their local communities. Account Name: DAISI BSB: 012405 Account Number: 403619756 Swift Code: ANZBAU3M Address: GPO Box 4488, Sydney, NSW 2001, Australia $700 will cover accommodation $1,800 will cover flights $2,500 will cover both flights and accommodation. If you can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me on +61(0)403 492 428. We will provide all donors with a report on how the money was spent and how many surgical procedures were performed. We will also add your name to the sponsorship page (https://daisi.com.au/sponsor-a-trip/) on our website. Prof Christophe Berney, Co-Chair - Doctors Assisting In South-Pacific Islands (DAISI)

12.01.2022 Fifty-five years old male patient investigated for iron deficiency anemia. A colon cancer is identified in his caecum at colonoscopy and the patient is subsequently scheduled for laparoscopic (keyhole) right hemicolectomy. During surgery, an unusual firm lesion is found on the upper right side of his abdomen, just lateral to the second part of the duodenum (DII), underneath the liver and to the right side of the gallbladder (GB). The hepatic flexure (HF) of his right colon i...s taken down and progressive dissection of this mass confirms that it corresponds in fact to the right kidney that has been displaced anteriorly and superiorly by a large inferior simple kidney cyst (KC). The lesion is left alone and the procedure completed without any incident. Final picture (D) shows the fashioned stapled ileo-colic anastomosis (ICA), following removal of his right colon (right hemicolectomy). A) TC: transverse colon; GB: gallbladder; Antrum: distal stomach. B) HF: hepatic flexure of the right colon; DII: second part of the duodenum. C) K: right kidney; KC: right kidney cyst. D) ICA: ileo-colic anastomosis. See more

03.01.2022 Interesting case of a 43 years old male patient with a clinical diagnosis of left inguinal hernia and past medical history of laparoscopic repair of a right inguinal hernia. At surgery, a completely distorted and 'shrunk' mesh was unexpectedly found sitting intraperitoneally on the left side, from a previous laparoscopic (IPOM) left inguinal hernia repair. The old mesh was removed and replaced by a new one that was fixed with fibrin glue in the extraperitoneal space (TAPP rep...air), thus reinforcing his left groin. Clinical outcome of this recurrent hernia repair was unremarkable. Laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM) approach for inguinal hernia has only been previously performed by few surgeons worldwide and currently more or less abandoned, mainly due to its unacceptably high failure rate and potential risk of associated complications. Today, the most commonly offered laparoscopic techniques are TAPP (transabdominal preperitoneal) or TEP (totally extraperitoneal) that are safe with very low recurrence or complication rates, when performed by expert surgeons.
