24.01.2022 SAFETY TIP.... Keep your child in a booster as long as they fit one to ensure correct and safe seatbelt placement. There are boosters that will fit average sized 10-12 year olds.
22.01.2022 SAFETY TIP.... When installing and using a rear facing child restraint, it is imperative that the recline angle is correct. A seat that is too upright will incr...ease the risk of dangerous head flop (chin to chest) and therefore positional asphyxiation may occur. Head flop to the side is ok as this helps to open the airways and is very common in newborns until they develop head control. The optimal recline angle for a rear facing child restraint is 40-45. To measure this, download an angle measurement app on your phone and place it between the harness where the child's neck usually sits. Some vehicles have deep seats and the restraint will sit too upright as a result. Using a tightly rolled towel (at the base of the seat only) will help to increase the recline angle. This is listed in your child restraint manual also. Every child restraint has 1 setting for rear facing and will have either an inbuilt or independent rebound bar that must be used along with the top tether strap. Remember not to overtighten the tether strap as this will pull the restraint upright (only the slack needs to be removed) or to brace the restraint with the front vehicle seats. And as always, when rear facing, the harness must always be level or above the child's shoulders, firm with no twists!

21.01.2022 Thank you all for being so patient whilst we did our due diligence. After ALOT of consideration and consultation with ACRI, DHHS, Business Victoria and others, it has been determined that as we provide an essential service to meet legal and safety requirements, Safety Seats IS permitted to keep operating under Stage 4 restrictions. This will however look different to our usual operations. Safety Seats will be carrying a copy of our Covid Safe Plan and Permitted Workers Permi...t at all times- we must adhere to these documents as a condition of working. We will still be wearing masks and gloves at all appointments BUT we must provide CONTACTLESS APPOINTMENTS ONLY. This means that- 1. We will have an in depth consultation with you prior to your appointment via phone/ video. 2. We will contact you upon arrival for you to unlock your vehicle. 3. You will need to have the child restraint/s ready outside and remain inside your home whilst we conduct the installation/ inspection. 4. Payment will be via bank transfer/ PayID only. 5. If your appointment is NOT urgent and can wait until after restrictions are lifted, we ask that you please reschedule. We know that these conditions are not ideal, however we must all do whatever is necessary at this time. We thank you for your understanding and ongoing support at this tough time. Hope to see you all soon!

09.01.2022 A great example from Luke at The Perfect Hubby Child Restraint Installations on how to fit a newborn into their car seat. Note how he stretches bubs legs out to get the hip straps across the hips instead of the legs, and the shoulder straps are positioned above the shoulders and firm. Congratulations on your new arrival from Safety Seats!!

05.01.2022 FRIDAY FEELS...
04.01.2022 SAFETY TIP... Luke from The Perfect Hubby Child Restraint Installations has created another great video showing how to loosen and tighten the top tether strap to get baby in or out of the seat easily. Take note of how firm the tether strap is done up- slack removed, "bouncy" and not overtight. It is designed to prevent forward rotation, not secure the seat (the seatbelt or isofix does that!). And remember, always pull the tether strap straight, not on an angle to prevent fluffing, cuts, damage etc.
04.01.2022 SAFETY TIP... Whilst a child can legally use a booster (with seatbelt) from 4, and nothing from 7- this is NOT the safest choice! After a child outgrows a 0-4yrs seat, the next step SHOULD be an extended harnessing seat. These are the tallest harnessed seats in Australia and should be used/ outgrown before a child moves to a booster, this is often not until 8yrs+. ... There are currently only 4 booster seat options that exit higher than an extended harnessing seat- Britax Kid Guard, Maxi Cosi Rodi and Infasecure Aspire/ Visage. Your child needs to meet the 5 STEP TEST to determine when they can safely travel without a booster. For more information on the safest options for your child, send us a message!
04.01.2022 SAFETY TIP.... Best practice recommendations are the safest choice for children. Our laws are the legal MINIMUM you need to abide by. Keeping children rear facing until they have outgrown an extended rear facing seat, keeping them harnessed in an extended harnessing seat and then keeping them in a booster until outgrown is the SAFEST and recommended choice. Your child should not sit on the vehicle seat until they meet the 5 step test (see comments).... Please contact us to discuss the best options for your child/ vehicle/ situation.
03.01.2022 Safety Seats is headed to the INNERWEST TOMORROW. If you are in the area and need your child restraints inspected or installed, please send us a message to book! Stay safe
01.01.2022 SAFETY TIP... It happens to everyone at some point or another- the dreaded vomit, wee or poo in the car seat When it comes to cleaning your car seats, you MUST take utmost care to follow the manufacturers instructions. These are listed in your manual or you can contact the manufacturers directly to confirm the best course of action.... Some restraints must only be washed with water or mild detergent or even at a certain temperature. Some cannot have the shell washed/ hosed and the harness and tether webbing must also be treated gently with only certain methods or products. You should NOT be removing any components of the child restraint unless specifically stated as ok by the manufacturer (this may include harness straps, tether straps, head restraints, base plates, ficed padding etc). This can not only void your warranty and insurance, it will also mean the restraint may not perform as it was initially designed and tested and therefore endanger your child. The general consensus amongst ALL manufacturers though is that the use of bleach, disinfectant, vinegar, enzymatic soakers, fabric softener, fragranced sprays, environmentally friendly products, steamers etc are NOT permitted!! If you are utilising a child restraint cleaning business to clean your seat, ALWAYS confirm what products and what cleaning method they use. Remember, mould is a NO GO!! It cannot be safely treated or removed. It is a danger not only to the integrity of the child restraint, but also your child. If your restraint has any mould on the shell, covers or straps- contact the manufacturer to confirm if replacement parts can be purchased or if a new seat is required.
