25.01.2022 Get Your Workers More Engaged in your safety Program The success of a companys OHS program depends on many players, including senior management, supervisors and workers. If any of these groups is disengaged, then the OHS program wont be as effective as it could beif its effective at all. We recently conducted a survey and asked how senior managers thought their workers would describe their engagement in their company OHS program. It was reassuring to see that 63% said en...gaged and another 11% said actively engaged. Unfortunately, that left 26% who thought their workers would say they were disengaged in the OHS program. So what can those employers do to get their workers more engaged? Taking whats called a lean safety approach can improve worker engagement. This includes activities such as; Proactively engaging workers in a meaningful safety improvement program, conducting safety walks and blitzes Treating incidents and near misses as opportunities to improve workplace safety instead of chances to impose discipline. For more on improving your companys safety culture, give us a call on (08) 9591 1316 and talk with one of our knowledgeable consultants, its an easier first step than you might think!

22.01.2022 Our staff are off to donate to the Red Cross Blood Service today, so our office will be closed between 10:30am and 12:30. Blood is vital to life and for many people blood donors are their lifeline. Currently only 1in 30 people give blood, but 1in 3 people will need blood in their lifetime. Modern processing techniques mean that a single blood donation, when separated into its components, can help at least 3 different patients and contribute to making up to 22 different produc...ts (including potentially life-saving immunisations for chicken pox, hepatitis B and tetanus). Have you considered giving blood on a regular basis? Its surprisingly easy and almost anyone can do it! Just call the Red Cross Blood Service on 13 95 96 to get started today. And no, it doesn't even hurt!

22.01.2022 Great service as usual from Telstra - Not! I just received my latest bill from Telstra, we are still waiting for them to connect our ADSL internet line and second phone line at our new office. They said to use a3/4G internet hotspot until then, so we set it up on a 15GB plan. So we now owe them $23,260.99! Apparently, there was a delay in changing what they sell as a 4GB unit to the 15GB plan and they charge $2.00 per excess MB. So still waiting for some guy in India to understand......Grrrrrr

22.01.2022 Okay! after an unpaid sabbatical for the last 2 years to look after my kids and get their schooling sorted as a single Dad, we are now back up and running. 21.01.2022 We have a busy week coming up. We are assisting 4 Curtin University students with their professional practice work placements. So far we have started 2, with Harley Carter working on auditing Norwell Transport and Sam Monaghan Working on management systems for Gravity Crane Services. This is a great opportunity for these students to get 'real world' experience in the safety and health field and we would very much like to thank those companies for providing the opportunity.

18.01.2022 Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of the 19 fire fighters killed in the Yarnell fire. Also to those who have lost homes and businesses in the same tragedy.

18.01.2022 News articles about Safety Services WA

18.01.2022 Is this where the new safety legislation will head in WA and other Australian States? OSHA cant send people responsible for workplace safety to jail. But they can refer cases to local prosecutors who are able to seek prison time. Thats what happened in this case, and now two men will be locked up. Sam Hyung Goo Shim, owner of roofing company California C&R, and his foreman, Jwa Young Kim, have both been sentenced to county jail in connection with the January 2008 death of ...an employee. Shim will serve one year. Kim will serve at least six months of a one-year sentence. Antonio Martinez was one of several employees working on a roofing project at a four-story apartment building in San Francisco. As he was working along the roofs edge, Martinez fell 38 feet to the sidewalk below. The fall killed him. Cal/OSHA found that there were no safety measures in place at the work site. Even though the foreman was present, workers on the roof didnt have harnesses or any other type of fall protection. There were no railings, scaffolds or other barriers to prevent a fall. There were also no written safety policies or safety training. Cal/OSHA fined California C&R $70,485. But thats not all it did. It also referred the case to the San Francisco District Attorney. The DA prosecuted, and the owner and foreman negotiated a plea agreement. The men must also pay restitution. Shim pled guilty to four felonies: involuntary manslaughter, wilful violation of a Cal/OSHA order causing death, workers compensation premium fraud and tax evasion. Kim pled guilty to one misdemeanour count of violation of state labour code. Do you think prison time was justified in this case? Let us know what you think by Commenting.

14.01.2022 An inspection program in Western Australia is being conducted to look at safety standards in automotive repair workplaces. WorkSafe WA Director Joe Attard said the automotive repair sector is being targeted because of its high rate of work-related injury. Workers in the automotive repair industry suffer a relatively high rate of injuries from being hit by objects, manual handling tasks and slips, trips and falls, said Mr Attard. There is also potential for them to be expose...d to hazardous substances in the course of their work, especially workers carrying out spray painting activities. Safety inspectors will look into priority areas of hazardous substances, electricity, manual tasks training of new and young workers, machinery guarding and slips, trips and falls. Issues specific to the industry will also be a focus such as spray booth safety, personal protective equipment, emergency procedures, mobile plant, health surveillance and pressure vessels. WorkSafe WA has an extensive schedule of proactive inspection programs concentrating on particular industries or activities or specific geographical areas aimed at providing employers with information on how to make workplaces safer, said Mr Attard. We firmly believe that raising awareness with proactive programs is the best way in which to lessen the risk of work-related injury and illness, but inspectors will take enforcement action during the program if necessary.

12.01.2022 Many thanks to Brian Oliver from the Sound Telegraph for the photos of our opening night. These have now been uploaded to our pics. Can you find yourself?

11.01.2022 I read an interesting comment by Greg Smith of STE Safety and Legal this morning that I thought was worth sharing.... 25 Years on: Remembering Piper Alpha For me, the positive legacy is the advancement in safety regulation, engineering and safety in design that has seen the improvement of the physical safety of high hazard workplaces. Safety in design has also improved the survivability of disasters so that when accidents to occur, their consequences are better mitigated.... The ongoing disappointment, however, is the persistent failure of management oversight and assurance to properly understand if health and safety risks are being managed. This is a failure that has played out in every major accident inquiry since Piper Alpha and continues to undermine effective safety management. .....This seems to be a common theme at many accident investigations. Senior management are often told what they want to hear, not what's really happening in their workplaces. This is compounded when they don't spend enough time (for whatever reason) in the workplace to see the true situation for themselves. As consultants, we can offer senior management an independent and unbiased view of the true state of safety in their workplace. It is our duty to ensure that as rough as it may be, we ensure that our clients are left with an accurate picture.

11.01.2022 Is zero harm really achievable in industry, or are we kidding ourselves? This might sound like a strange questions, coming from a safety person, but the statistics show that we are still hurting and killing too many people - with 101 lives lost already this year. So what should we do? Make more rules and go to a harmonised legislation framework? I personally believe that we need to go backwards, and stop treating people like dummies. ... In order to look after yourself at work you need to take personal responsibility for your own actions. But how can you do that when the actions that you take are so firmly dictated by the company or principal employer? Lets reverse this trend and go back to teaching employees good, sound risk management techniques.

10.01.2022 Are you a recreational scuba diver or snorkeling enthusiast? Following earlier tragedies, the Dive Safety Reference Group was established in Queensland in 2011 to conduct a review of the recreational diving and snorkeling industry to ensure Queensland continues to have Australia's most comprehensive dive industry safety regime. The review involved significant public and industry consultation processes including invitations for written submissions on the information paper and ...final report; and five public forums held across the state in Cairns, Townsville, Airlie Beach, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. This group has now released the new Code of Practice for Recreational Diving, Recreational Technical Diving and Snorkelling This new Code of Practice is available for free download at http://www.deir.qld.gov.au//recreational-diving-recreation

09.01.2022 Opening Night - Business After Hours

09.01.2022 Many thanks to Tony, Rebecca and Angela from Business Foundations. You guys payed a major part in us winning the Regional Business Awards. Keep up the great work.

09.01.2022 I announced last week that Safety Services WA had been nominated for the regional business awards - Well we have just found out that we have now been announced as finalists. This means we are in the top 3, with the winners to be announced on August 8. We are feeling very honoured to have made it so far, a feat that could not have been realised without the help of our clients, families and friends.

08.01.2022 A great safety idea to stop you having your holiday spoilt. A set of these would go great on my camper trailer in WA.

08.01.2022 The business incubators provide invaluable help for start-up businesses. They have certainly helped us and we will do all we can to see that we continue to support them with other new businesses.

07.01.2022 Get the right help, at the right time, to get things done.

06.01.2022 Non-compliant generators sold in Australia could kill Safety authorities have warned that some power generators that were sold earlier this year are potentially deadly. The ABC reports that 700 generators were imported into Australia from China in early 2013. The units have incorrect power sockets which could be potentially deadly if used with the supplied cable and alligator clips.... "If you put the plug and the alligator clips into the wrong, into the 240 volt outlet, and touch the alligator clips to the end then of course you get a nasty shock and potentially it could be deadly and we actually did have a fatality in the 1980s when a similar problem occurred," said Roy Ormerod from Tasmania's Workplace Standards Authority. Global sourcing is becoming more widespread throughout the electrical industry. This has thrown up the issue of non-compliant products finding their way into Australia. In response, National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) and electrical industry information portal Voltimum recently launched the Does it Comply" campaign. The campaign coincides with the ERAC decision to implement the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) where all suppliers of electrical product and some specific high risk electrical equipment will be registered on a national database.

05.01.2022 Well, tonight's the night for finding out the winners of the 2013 Regional Business Awards. No matter what the result, we are looking forward to a great night out. Good luck to all of the finalists.

04.01.2022 It's one of the most important safety skills a person can learn, and one that all too often gets missed out. Do you know what it is? It's situational awareness! We all need to practice this skill by being continually aware of what is happening around us, whether it be at work, in the car or playing sport. Virtually every activity can be made safer by being more aware of our surroundings.

04.01.2022 Off to lunch at the Aviary in Perth with a new contact, great reward after a busy weekend of work.

04.01.2022 2 interviews today and another 3 tomorrow. Looking for a new admin & marketing assistant.

03.01.2022 Something to lighten the mood for a Wednesday morning.

01.01.2022 Well, it's nearly the end of the week - and the start of another Month. What are your goals for August? Ours is to do well in the Regional Business Awards and finally make an impact into new clients in the Kwinana industrial strip. My personal goals are the same as usual, try to drink less, spend less and exercise more. I did bring my exercise equipment to work today and set up a small gym, so that's a start.
