25.01.2022 Many practitioners commented that female clients reported perpetrators using the COVID-19 pandemic as a form of abuse and control as part of their violent behavior. Some perpetrators used their essential worker status as a form of abuse when it comes to access or non-access of children. A copy of the summary report about how our practitioners are perceiving the client experience of COVID-19 is available at https://www.safvcentre.org.au/practitioners-report-on-clie/ #sexualassault #familyviolence #support #barwon #geelong #wimmera

24.01.2022 We are delighted to celebrate the passing of the Gender Equality Bill 2019 on Thursday 20 February 2020. The Bill aims to drive organisational and cultural chan...ge, including a framework for Victoria public sector, Councils and universities to take action for gender equality. Gender equality benefits everyone, regardless of gender. It is a human right and precondition to social justice. Gender equality is also essential to changing the story and working towards preventing violence against women and family violence. This Bill aligns to the vision of The SAFV Centre vision for a community free from family violence and sexual assault, and a society underpinned by the principles of gender equality, social justice and human rights. This is a once in a generation reform, and The SAFV Centre look forward to being a part of this change. #genderequalitybill

19.01.2022 Practitioners have commented that many women also reported positive outcomes as a result of COVID-19. Examples include having less appointments to attended, some perpetrators being deterred by the potential penalties for breaching COVID-19 restrictions and therefore are following intervention order conditions, relief of school/social related anxiety (young people) and COVID-19 restrictions supporting the work of placing boundaries. https://www.safvcentre.org.au/practitioners-report-on-clie/ #sexualassault #familyviolence #support #barwon #geelong #wimmera

15.01.2022 In April 2020, we collected responses from our specialist sexual assault and family violence practitioners in the Barwon and Wimmera regions about how clients are reporting their experiences of COVID-19. The information collected in this survey indicates clear patterns in the way the pandemic is impacting people who have experienced sexual assault and family violence. A copy of the summary providing an overview of how our practitioners are perceiving the client experience of COVID-19 is available here https://www.safvcentre.org.au/practitioners-report-on-clie/ Over the next week we will be sharing some of the key themes and statistics from the survey.

14.01.2022 We say sorry to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and to those who had their children forcibly removed from them. For the disconnection forged between family, culture and community of the stolen generation and the impact of this on many generations of First Nations people and communities. #SorryDay2020

14.01.2022 To celebrate International Women Day (IWD) on Sunday 8 March, our Wimmera office joined local Horsham organisations to hear from guest speakers including Tanisha Lovett and Hser Wah Po Kyaut. This morning the group acknowledged this years theme of #EachforEqual - We are all parts of a whole. Our individual actions, conversations, behaviours and mindsets can have an impact on our larger society. International Womens Day provides opportunity for us to gather; reflect on our organisations commitment to primary prevention, celebrate diversity and womens achievements, reflect on the herstory of IWD and to harness the momentum to be agents of change in creating a gender equal community, locally and globally.

12.01.2022 Healthy relationships are based on joint decision-making, respect and fairness. Consent cannot be assumed. Even if a person said yes before, even if you are in ...a relationship, even if you live together, even if you are married - when your partner says no, they mean no. Consent is enthusiastic, clear and mutual in all healthy, respectful relationships. Consent is a shared understanding between both people. 01.01.2022 Our practitioners report found for women who live in the same home as the perpetrator, clients reported they felt like they couldnt leave the house because they were living and working under the same roof, with little opportunity to leave and no access to support from friends and family. Due to the increased time at home with the perpetrator, women had to be more vigilant and use de-escalation strategies. https://www.safvcentre.org.au/practitioners-report-on-clie/ ... #sexualassault #familyviolence #support #barwon #geelong #wimmera
