06.05.2022 ANZAC DAY Today we remember not only the veterans who have served for Australia, but also the courageous animals who also stood by their side Lest we forget ... #anzacday #anzacday2022 #sagevets

03.05.2022 From all of us at Sage Vets we wish you a safe and happy Easter.

28.04.2022 EASTER CHOCOLATE WARNING FOR PETS Chocolate is poisonous to dogs mostly because of its theobromine content, which dogs are unable to metabolize effectively. All types of chocolate are on the do-not-eat list but cooking chocolate, cocoa and dark chocolate generally have the highest levels of theobromine, and ingesting just a small amount of any of these can do a dog serious harm. Cooking chocolate is typically the most dangerous.... Once eaten, theobromine stimulates the nervous system, often causing an increased heart rate, increased urination and even seizures. The more theobromine that has been ingested, the worse the symptoms, so be on the lookout for the following signs of chocolate poisoning: vomiting diarrhoea increased thirst excessive panting shaking If your dog has eaten chocolate, or if you suspect he has, give us a call or if it is out of our opening hours contact WAVES emergency veterinary hospital as soon as you can. The vet will ask questions about the type and quantity of chocolate eaten and the weight and breed of your dog. This information helps to determine whether a toxic or lethal amount has been ingested and will dictate the type of treatment needed.

22.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR JULY PUPPY PRESCHOOL CLASS!

22.01.2022 Today, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month we pause to remember those men, women and animals who have served and sacrificed for their country. Today we remember those who volunteered, sacrificed, served, fought, and died, for our freedom. For those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to make Australia the country that it is. The "Animal" Poppy... Most people are unaware that as well as the traditional red poppy worn to mark the Armistice Day of 11 November 1918, that there is also the purple poppy, remembering animals that died during conflict. To commemorate all the animal deeds and sacrifices in war, the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation (AWAMO) has issued a purple poppy, which can be worn alongside the traditional red one. Just like other countries including the United Kingdom people are encouraged to wear the purple poppy alongside the traditional red poppy as a reminder that both humans and animals have and continue to serve

22.01.2022 With Christmas fast approaching we thought we would share some information on festive foods that may cause your pets to become unwell should they eat them. Cats and dogs have different digestive systems to us, so while that extra slice of Christmas cake or slice of ham might not be harmful to us, it can be harmful to our fur babies. Below are some common foods we should not feed to our pets. Milk, cheese and dairy... Some dogs can ingest dairy without a problem, others experience digestive pain and allergic reactions. Cats cannot eat any dairy foods as they are lactose intolerant. Chocolate Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine which is toxic to cats and dogs. It can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heart problems, muscle tremors and seizures. The amount of theobromine depends on the type of chocolate eaten. Darker chocolate has a higher level of theobromine and is more toxic. Chocolate also contains caffeine which can cause some dogs and cats to become restless and suffer from rapid breathing, heart palpitations and muscle tremors. Grapes and raisins Grapes and raisins can be very dangerous for your dog. They can be highly toxic and not easily processed by their digestive system. Soon after eating them your dog may start vomiting, resulting in dehydration and possible kidney failure. The level of toxicity in cats is unknown, we advise to keep grapes and raisins out of reach from cats and dogs at all times. Garlic and onions Raw garlic and onions can cause gastrointestinal upsets and can cause anaemia if large volumes are consumed. In small amounts it is unlikely to cause issues but ongoing consumption can lead to digestive upsets. Alcohol Alcohol is very harmful in both cats and dogs and should be avoided. A small amount as little as a teaspoon of alcohol can lead to brain and liver damage in cats. A dogs digestive system is not able to handle alcohol and can result in kidney failure if consumed. Cooked bones It is best not to feed your dog or cat Cooked bones as they can splinter and cause internal damage to the digestive system. If you choose to feed bones raw bones are best as there is less chance of injury. Macadamia nuts It only takes eating a few macadamia nuts to make pets ill. Symptoms may include lethargy, vomiting, hyperthermia, muscle tremors and paralysis. Some other types of nuts, such as walnuts, can also be toxic to your pets. Treatment and prevention It your dog or cat has eaten any of the above foods, please reach out to our vets and nurses for advice. It also helps us by knowing how much they’ve eaten of any of these foods as this can assist us in providing appropriate treatment. The easiest way to avoid having to treat your pet is through prevention. Below is a cute video to show some of the foods our pets should not be eating or drinking this Christmas!

19.01.2022 Perth, do you let your pets sleep in bed with you? They bring comfort and security, so its unsurprising that half of pet owners let animals sleep in their b...eds. But when Rufuss butt is on your pillow and an inch from your face, or Fluffys grooming you with her tongue from head to toe, youd be forgiven for wondering if it was damaging to your health or the cause of troubling behaviour.
