25.01.2022 A Training Day for our Volunteers was held on Monday, 3rdAugust, and it was a day that allowed our Volunteers the chance to hone their various skills. We struck the jackpot as far as weather conditions were concerned. The day was attended by a total of 24 of our Volunteers. Some of those, for personal reasons, stayed only for a short while, but took the opportunity to catch up with fellow Volunteers. On the day we were joined by a new member, Peter Griffin. Peter has a backgr...ound of sailing and boating. He also entertained us with stories about his involvement with radio control boats. Peter, on behalf of our group, I extend a warm welcome to you and trust that you find your time with us rewarding. Unfortunately, it may be some time before we can return to our core reason for our existence of providing experiences on the water for people with disabilities. When that does happen, I am sure that you find the experience rewarding.

22.01.2022 This Saturday, the 7th of November, we will be holding our first Sausage Sizzle at BUNNINGS VIRGINIA. For those not familiar with the Virginia location, it is ...at 1836 -1840 Sandgate Road Virginia. This is between Pritchard Road and Robinson Road East. There is another entrance at the rear of the premises in Newtown Street. The BBQ is under cover near the main entrance. The majority of the Car Park is under cover. We will be operating between 9.00am and 3.00pm. This will be a major fundraiser for us since we have not been able to operate during 2020 except for 1 day in March. We will be selling Sausages on Bread for $2.50 each. We will be selling Cans of Soft Drink for $1.50 each. Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, we have missed seeing our Clients, their Families and/or Carers. If you can come and support us, we will be happy to see you. I would like to thank the Management and Staff of BUNNINGS VIRGINIA for providing us with this opportunity to participate in their COMMUNITY SAUSAGE SIZZLE program, it is deeply appreciated. 20.01.2022 Sailability Shorncliffe has not been able to operate due to the restrictions of the Coronavirus Guidelines. A decision was made to hold regular Social Days for our Volunteers,

18.01.2022 Our latest Training day was held on Tuesday, 15th of September, with 15 people attending. A former Volunteer of Sailability Whitsunday, Aram Madigan, joined us ...on the day. Aram is currently working as a diver with a Southern Barrier Reef research program working out of Gladstone. Aram may be volunteering with us at a later date. 13 of the attendees went out on sailing dinghies and the pontoon boat. Jonathan Routhan took the pontoon boat over to Woody Point. There they laid just off the jetty while discussing the local conditions and learning about the depth sounder. The forecast Easterlies were beginning to strengthen past 15 Knots, so the Grumpy Walker returned to Cabbage Tree Creek. The Access 303 skippers enjoyed the conditions as, at first, SE’s then Easterlies, combined with the ebb time allowing them to practice their skills. The strengthening winds dictated that the sailing program finished earlier than anticipated. While the action was taking place on the water, Peter Tyrrell and I went about shifting cabinets, tools, spare tyres, and miscellaneous equipment around the shed. The result created more space. When it came time to put away the boats etc., the extra room allowed for easier manoeuvrability. The day was enjoyed by all who attended. The next Training Day will take place on Monday 12th October, weather conditions permitting. See more

17.01.2022 My favourite OLDER photos of Chris laughing when a gust of wind surprised us with him in control while I played with the camera.

13.01.2022 On Monday 12th October, Sailability Shorncliffe held its latest Training Day at Shorncliffe. A total of 19 people attended on the day. Some of them accepted my invitation to come down later and have a cuppa and a catch up with fellow Volunteers. We welcomed 3 guests on the day. Aram Madigan paid us another visit and brought along his friend Kara Chesal and introduced her to the joys of sailing an Access 303 dinghy. Thank you to Kara for taking the controls of the Energex bugg...y and helping with the retrieval of the dinghies and transferring them back to the shed. It was interesting to hear of Kara’s work with NGOs helping developing nations like Timor. A friend and former workmate of Jonathon Routhan, Bryan Robinson, joined us as well and enjoyed his day.

11.01.2022 Right now, we’re all facing the same storm, but we’re all doing so in different boats Some have yachts, others are in tinnies. Some have a substantial crew on ...board, others are rowing alone. Some have life jackets (higher resilience, stronger relationships, more optimism, use their strengths and more positivity), others don’t even have a working rudder... I have been using this boat analogy a lot this week (after hearing it from @janewundersitz) to explain why some people are handling the current crisis better than others.. We are not all in the same boat. We are all in the same storm. That summation of our current situation originally came from Damian Barr (the illustration is by Barbara Kelley), who suggested that some of us will sail through this pandemic with our health and jobs intact, yet others will lose one or both, or potentially more. So if you’re wondering why others are fairing better or worse than you at the moment, perhaps it’s worth considering what type of boat they are in.

11.01.2022 Sailability Shorncliffe would like to acknowledge the support we are receiving from our Host, Queensland Cruising Yacht Club, during the difficult period that w...e are facing due to the COVID-19 restrictions. QCYC has allowed us to operate Rent Free until we are able to stabilise our Cash Flow. QCYC has also launched an appeal for donations from their members to support Sailability Shorncliffe. I would like to thank the Executive and Committee Members of QCYC for their ongoing support. It is greatly appreciated See more

09.01.2022 Training day at Shorncliffe. Sadly we won't be able to operate in the forseeable future as social distancing is not possible in our boats and many of our clients and volunteers would be vulnerable to the virus. (Photos by Bernard)

05.01.2022 Our next Training Day for our Volunteers is proposed to take place on Monday, 2nd November. The current forecast is for a partly cloudy day with a temperature r...ange of 19 to 30C. Winds are expected to be E/SE around 10 to 12 Knots. A high tide of 2.21 metres will occur at 10.24am. However, we are experiencing periods of unstable weather with possible storms forecasted for Saturday and the chance of a storm on Sunday. This could create lots of debris in Cabbage Tree Creek. I will issue an updated forecast on Sunday as if we will be holding the Training Day. Once again, we will be following Sailability Shorncliffe COVID-19 guidelines and updated information that may be issued by relevant authorities. I look forward to seeing as many of our Volunteers who can attend. See more

05.01.2022 Here's a few pics of our first ever sail on our SV14s. The first ever SV14s sailing in Australia. I'm happy to say that they sail beautifully. Here,we're sail...ing from CCYS to CYC in a very variable breeze, and the boats handled perfectly. The twin rudders on the wide stern means that they keep tracking when heeled, and the 130 kg keel bulb, and the beamy chined hull form means that you don't heel too far, which makes them feel safe and predictable in gusty conditions. The SV14s are a real credit to Simonis and Voogd, the designers and to Fareast Yachts, the builders of these world class disability, performance sailing boats. Don't forget that the designers and the builders have done all of this for free, for the good of sailors, living with disabilities, all over the world. Thanks to them, and to our supporters here, these beautiful boats will provide all the pleasure, challenge and satisfaction to these sailors in Cairns, for decades to come. See more

05.01.2022 On Saturday the 10th October, Sailability Shorncliffe supported Queensland Cruising Yacht Club’s Working Bee. Thank you to our 8 Volunteers who contributed thei...r time to the activity. Also attending was Molly the Dog who kept an eye on us and made sure that we didn’t slack off too much. Organiser, Rob Wassom, had sent out a notice to all owners of boats on hardstands that this working bee will be happening. Sailability was given the job of trimming the vines on the road fence away from the boats, which was accomplished with good teamwork by 9.30am. The award for tenacity goes to Phillipa who, with her decorated pruner, worked to remove evidence that there ever had been a dead vine entangled around the fencing wire. However, Peter Tyrrell was outvoted on trimming the Hibiscus near the entrance gate. Afterwards, Rob invited us to join the other QCYC members who had attended the morning’s activities for coffee etc. in the Club House. Those who did stay enjoyed having a chat and a cuppa and getting to know some of the QCYC Members. Once again, thank you to those who attended for giving of their time on the day, it is most appreciated. See more

02.01.2022 Ahoy everybody, Can the can, no I’m not talking about the Suzi Quatro song, but to remind you that you can help support Sailability Shorncliffe by supporting us through the CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE Program. We are regularly receiving donations at various locations on the Northside and that is greatly appreciated. Any donations of containers help us to maintain our cash flow in a positive way. If you have not already done so, please make a note of our Account Number for Contain...ers for Change. It is: C10082267. Any item that has a notice on it stating 10c refund at collection points will be accepted. So please, do your bit to help us. Can the can. Toss the tin. Place the plastic. Bop the bottle. Every little bit counts. Thank you, Ted Balneaves, President, Sailability Shorncliffe Inc. See more

01.01.2022 On Monday, 2nd November, our latest Training Day was held. There were strong winds out on the open bay, but the mangroves provided sheltered areas for our Access 303 Sailing Dinghies, especially in the basin between VMR and Baxter’s Jetty. The high tide allowed the dinghies to utilise all the area.
