25.01.2022 Five weeks is a very very long time and there have been a "few" changes since my last post at the start of March. If Covid-19 wasnt bad enough, cyclone Harold has gone straight through Luganville, the second largest city in Vanuatu and the soon to be home of the "Vanuatu Sailing Centre" at the Vanuatu Maritime College. Still waiting for reports on how bad the damage is. There is still no communication into the area as of Wed am. At least we still have homes in which to be... confined :( As for the Vanuatu Sailing Centre - Covid-19 has all but put an end to any actual sailing events in Vanuatu this year but preparations are still continuing in the form of packing and sending a 40ft container with two yachts and a pile of support equipment and training material. Watch for the next post on how to fit two 22ft boats into a 40ft container (without the use of a chainsaw). I have engaged a consulting panel consisting of Dr Who and Einstein to get them in and Houdini to get them out! Bye for now See more

24.01.2022 Still looking for a suitable person. There seems to be a dearth of 18YOs who know the difference between a spark plug and a piston

24.01.2022 The team have had a good run in the past 24hrs however a rather big squall hit the team earlier this morning which has resulted in a small breakage in their mai...nsail sliders. The team are currently sheltering in Loch Spelve whilst they make a quick repair! However despite this, some excellent videos and photos have been coming our way! This one of a full moon during the night just shows the sheer magic of this challenge! Thank you all to everyone who has donated, all proceeds go to BBC Children in Need! Stay safe team! 23.01.2022 I have had several enquiries regarding offers of financial assistance to help the Vanuatu Maritime College rebuild and reopen their facilities following Cyclone Harold (see previous post). After investigating various options Edel and I have decided that Go Fund Me provides the best alternative for the Melbourne sailing community to contribute - it is easy to use, provides visibility of the collection and use of funds and allows us to ensure every dollar goes directly to the ...college. The down side is that donations will not be recognised as deductions by the ATO. I have asked four other people to join the fundraising team so that we have appropriate probity assurance for donors; their names will be known to many members of the Melbourne Sailing community and they all have a strong connection with Vanuatu from a sailing perspective. Their names will appear on the Go Fund Me page once they confirm their availability. All funds will be used to assist in the purchase of materials to rebuild the college and also to assist local staff whos homes have been damaged and destroyed. While I know this is a not the best of times for a lot of people, the modest $2000 target we have set will make a difference and if we happen to get to $5000 that will replace their wharf walkway which was destroyed by a runaway ship. If you want to know more please feel free to post questions for all to see or contact Edel or myself. Cheers Robert Bradley See more

19.01.2022 Very successful visit to Vanuatu last week to fine tune the arrangements for the "Vanuatu Sailing Centre". We worked on the logistics for transportation, storage, use of facilities, handling the Columbia 22s and a few other things. The Vanuatu Maritime College board provided go-ahead approval based on the Business Plan and the principles for establishing a joint venture. We also drew up an draft program for the coming season; more on that to come. The new website is nearly ready for release as well.

19.01.2022 More on the damage caused by Cyclone Harold in a later post once I get all the news. In the meantime the packing proceeds. The container has arrived and Duck has been flipped on her side and transported to the container location for loading. Next up is Rose :)

18.01.2022 With Duck safely stowed in the container it was time to do Rose. With the pushpin, pulpit and lifelines removed it then takes about 3 - 4 hours to flip her on her side and gently suspend her in a cradle. You can watch the whole process condensed into 20 seconds

17.01.2022 Today was the big day, did I manage to get a boat with a 2.44m beam low enough in its cradle to fit through a 2.6m high door? Check out the photos to see how we did it. BIG thanks to Rob Derrick for his advice and help and thanks to Robert Date for the kind use of his yard space in which to perform the operation.

16.01.2022 And weve finished. Tangle o the Isles is tied up in the marine and Im showered a warm with wee dram.

15.01.2022 Came across this again today. Little bit of a sensationalist headline but the content provides good coverage of the damage caused by cyclone Harold in Vanuatu.

14.01.2022 How to dismantle a Columbia 22 so it fits into a shipping container.

14.01.2022 Something less morbidly philosophical and far more interesting this time. The Vanuatu Sailing Centre is starting to look like reality. The Joint Venture (Sail... Escapade and Vanuatu Maritime College) agreement is being draw up, the freight forwarders are beavering away working out how to get two Columbia 22s and a container to Luganville and Im off to Vanuatu in a couple of weeks to check out some logistics issues and meet with various members of the VMC board. 10.01.2022 We are pleased to announce that the board of the Vanuatu Maritime College has approved the formation of a Joint Venture with Sail Escapade to promote a new Sailing Centre in Vanuatu based in Luganville. What is already the dive capital of the pacific will soon be the sailing capital as well; offering RYA accredited training, extended onboard training , Yachtmaster fast track, skippered cruising tours of the remote islands, day and weekend excursions and more.

08.01.2022 The Vanuatu Tropical Cyclone relief fundraising has reached the $2000 initial target. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Contributions have been between $10 ...and $100 and have added up to a healthy total. Thanks to Edel Doyle, Neville Rose, Steve Allen, George Shaw and Deb Allen for being part of the team. The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria Inc. (ORCV) have volunteered to do the bank transfers to Vanuatu which we expect to occur in a few days time. If you would still like to contribute, the donations page on Go Fund Me will be open for another week or two, just click on an attached link or search "Vanuatu Maritime College" on gofundme.com Thanks everyone. 07.01.2022 I received news a few days ago from Luganville in Vanuatu following the passage of Tropical Cyclone Harold. The eye of Harold passed directly over Luganville, population 16,000 and the second largest town in Vanuatu. While the news was mostly about the Vanuatu Maritime College (VMC), it provided a general insight into the impact of Cyclone Harold. The good news is there appears to have been little or no loss of life. Not so good news is that most buildings have sustained so...me degree of damage and almost all rural and village housing has been destroyed including the homes of four of the VMC staff. If you look at the attached photos you will see that the trees have all been stripped of their foliage - those brown trunks and branches you can see in the photos were covered in dense green leaves a few days ago. Check the photos of the campus which I posted back in February and youll get the idea. Overall the college appears to have faired reasonably well with water damage to most buildings and some doors blown off or in. The VMCs existing training lifeboat, true to its name, passed the test and survived unscathed while their new free fall training lifeboat (a gift from South Korea which only arrived in February and is awaiting installation) had a miraculous escape when a 40ft container toppled sideways and landed resting against the lifeboat! The VMC pier, soon to be the home of the Columbia 22s Rose, James and Duck, also had a lucky escape when a ship in the adjacent repair yard broke loose and came to rest 4m from the pier. Not so lucky was the main deep water floating wharf which was taken out by a direct hit from one of the ships you might have seen in the news photos now resting on a beach somewhere. While the pontoons and securing arms you see in the photos can be refloated and repaired, the walkway to the pontoons was completely destroyed and a replacement will need to be procured. The long cleanup process has commenced and the college does not expect to reopen in much less than three months. The job has not been made any easier by the damage to the electricity network. Most of the wooden power poles have snapped and the steel ones have bent, in some cases to ground level. It will be around three months before power is restored See more

06.01.2022 Having been driven back down the sound of Mull last night by 30 knot winds and big short waves we had to retreat to the safety of Lochaline! We were hugely appr...eciative of a decent sleep and woke this morning to a very cold but beautiful frosty morning. How quickly the weather can change! Preparing now to sail back to Dunstaffnage our starting point. Thank you all so much for sponsoring us if you have already and if youve not then please sponsor us if you can!
