20.01.2022 Jon celebrated his last night in St Maarten last night, enjoying a meal with his Perth friend Paul Stratfold. Jon is departing St Maarten at 1400h local time (...0200hrs Perth time) and heading for Colón, Panama where he will spend two weeks in quarantine before transiting the Panama Canal. The No Plastic Ocean team sincerely thank Paul for taking great care of Jon throughout his stay in St Maarten. Paul has assisted Jon with repairs to Perie Banou II and been a friendly face for Jon to have some (distanced) social contact over the past two months. Thank you Paul! 17.01.2022 It's that time of year again for most of us in the boating community, time to start thinking about taking our boats out of the water for some much needed TLC. ...Jon has Perie Banou II lifted out of the water yesterday in St Maarten. He's happy to report that the yacht is in great shape and a coat of antifouling paint is all that is required. Thanks to N Signs and 3M, the graphics are still looking fantastic after sailing 11945 nautical miles. We'd like to thank the Minderoo Foundation along with all the other generous individuals and businesses who have supported Jon's voyage. While these delays are not ideal, they are to protect Jon's health. We endeavour to manage every risk to ensure Jon arrives back in Fremantle safely! Jon's departure date from St Maarten is yet to be confirmed due to the Covid 19 situation in Panama. All microplastics samples up until St Maarten have been received by Curtin University in Perth who have begun analysing them. 09.01.2022 DBYC Polar Bear Series Today was the first two races of DBYC's annual Polar Bear series. 11 yachts took to the ice cold waters of Geographe Bay and braved fresh breezes whilst competing in the first two races of the prestigious Polar Bear trophy series.... The fleet consisted of Lasers, Puffin Pacers, Splashes and and a Minnow with results calculated on yardstick. The sailing day would not have been such a success without the efforts of our volunteers. Special thanks to our race officer Rob Rose, and to Peter Ryall for calculating the results. Keeping our sailors safe was a team of support boat volunteers who manned two of our support RIB's. Thank you to our new and existing volunteers who gave up their day to man the support craft. Thanks also to our bosun Michael Green who was on hand to assist with the launching of the support boats and repairs along the way. The next installment of the Polar Bear series will be on July 12th.

09.01.2022 Jon Sanders Transits the Panama Canal. Jon has completed another major milestone of his 11th Solo Circumnavigation, his transit of the Panama Canal from the cit...y of Colon in the Caribbean to Balboa, Panama City on the Pacific side. Jon was assisted by Liz Back, the Australian Consul in Panama who provided her family members as safe line handlers for the canal transit. Perie Banou II was rafted up alongside Wildcat, skippered by Jon's friend Paul Stratfold. Paul's assistance in St Maarten and during the lead-up to the canal transit has been greatly appreciated. Perie Banou II exited the last of the Cocoli Locks around 7am this morning Perth time. He is now tied to a mooring ball outside Balboa while he readies Perie Banou II for his 38 day (approx) passage to Tahiti. Jon will depart Balboa on Friday after he has topped up his fuel and water supplies and will then sail onto Tahiti. Follow his 11th solo circumnavigation at age 81 from his website www.jonsanders.com Jon has faced some of the toughest conditions in his sailing career on his last leg from Tahiti to Bundaberg, Queensland. ... His Yanmar auxiliary engine took on water and had to be replaced, his chartplotter and tiller pilots died and his wind vane required significant repairs. In addition to the gear failure, he cracked a rib during one of the storms. Jon has recovered well and is almost ready to continue on his history making voyage, measuring micro plastics in the southern hemisphere’s oceans. We need to raise $50,000 to get him home safely.
