25.01.2022 ASSA and Gosford sailing club will be working closely over the next few days to come to a decision regarding the upcoming national titles. Our intentions will ...be announced to the community on Wednesday 23rd by 8pm. We certainly would like to see a COVID-Safe regatta go ahead as planned, however, as much as we all enjoy racing skiffs, the safety of the sailors, volunteers and the broader community is the top priority. These next few days will provide us the time to plan and assess the current conditions to make the right decision so we can provide clarity for our sailors. Thanks again for your patience and understanding during this time. If anyone needs any further information, please contact us through our website.

23.01.2022 Once again, thanks to Ross Bull for this week's photos.

23.01.2022 Tanko. Tanko ? Way way back. Started in Gwen’s against the likes of Peter Dollin and Peter Hubble. Moved to 16’s and took another decade to gain supremacy aga...inst names of Mckellar, Mckay, Riley, Bruniges, Jones and Gray et al. Dennis won, and equalled Jack Cassidy’s 6 Australian titles, all in 8 years between seasons 1983 and 1990. And you don’t just win so many titles without acknowledging his other wins in state, zone and interclub championships. Within this article, taken from Australian Sailing magazine August 1984, contributing factors mentioned were crew( Greg Junk, Phil Barber and David Freedman ), sponsorship of Burwood Calendars by Graeme Purvis and hull by Colin Thomas. Graeme was one of the commodores of St George sailing club for many years and through social media it seems it’s his birthday today. The driving forces put towards Tankos dominance were explained by new fourthhand David Freedman who spoke of professionalism and attitude. I’ve kept David’s testimonial but can’t access it right now. The winning attitude shown to a new young crew was something David recalled well. For the record Dennis did venture into 18’s for a short time but is now retired on the south coast. Greg is almost retired, marrying off his daughters, lives locally and is a champion MG sailor/skipper in his own right. Phil works near Belmont and sails at that club with life long friends. David is growing his own family and lives and works on the far north coast. Additionally the skiff shown is one of two that has been kept in storage at a maritime museum in Sydney. Incidentally I love the top left photo, chasing Mckay. Ok ok it’s zipped. See more

23.01.2022 Another piece of history thanks to Wayne Pascoe

22.01.2022 Faces behind the scenes. In the year 2000, the Sydney Olympic Games was described as the best olympics ever . For the first time in its history, volunteers ...were used to assist in its organisation and credit rightly went to all those people, who now have their names on public display alongside the stadium. A previous posting I did dedicated similar contributions to the St George sailing club by its life members which made our club run just as smooth. I also said their dedication was typical but didn’t represent all our club life. When you head down to the club next, rig your boat and sail out to race, you may notice other people who behind the scenes, also get themselves ready to be on that same patch of water. I refer to a handful of notable folk called the ‘ starters ‘. And they include the guys in runabouts on patrol. These fine people don’t ask for anything, but deserve respect, as do all volunteers including the commodores ashore. Apart from life members John Andrew, Ken Guthrie (recently retired) and John Hall, other club long standing stalwarts include Glen York, Keith and Bob Fleming, Darryl Schofield, Paul Donovan and the lady who drives the team, Lorraine York. You should also know the Flemings as veteran club photographers and sailors of 16 ft skiffs going back over 50 years, who’ve also served on official positions during that time. Darryl Schofield came to the club in 1982, bringing his two boys who crewed flying ants. He similarly took on commodore roles for three years but most importantly started the clubs sailing school and remained doing that for many years. The education of young sailors is a credit to Darryl as countless now older higher achievers will attest to. Obviously ‘ the starters ‘ have a home to go to but when they’re not there, service to their club is foremost in their minds. Below are some photos of people who start you. Also, photos of the start boats ‘ St George, Billo, Uncle Ted and currently, the Old Bill Riley. See more

21.01.2022 St George Sailing Club Project, Sans Souci. Another exciting phase of the reconstruction.

19.01.2022 VALE - Fred Arnold We are saddened by the passing of Fred Arnold (Frederick Wallace Arnold), Life Member and Past Director. Age: Too Young Fred plied his trade as a stonemason/letter cutter (headstones), before later swapping his tools for a pen and a handshake as a salesperson extraordinaire.... Fred sailed in his early days with Brian Barlow and later with John ‘Andy’ Andrew on Kerry Ann, Chrissie and Jubilee Poker Machines as a sheethand. A lady crewmember once said after a Botany Bay Championship when we swam, my husband just yelled at me Get back in the boat but Freddie went out of his way to help me back on board". Fred was a true gentleman both on and off the water. After he retired from sailing, he swapped his trapeze belt, for a set of lawn bowls. Fred had a long battle in the health stakes. His favourite saying was I am still here it hasn’t got me yet Fred, Freddie, Freddie long socks, Frederick thank you for contributing such wonderful memories to the journals of St George Sailing Club and just tell those other sailors you have joined at the bar up there the shout is on them.

15.01.2022 A few good men. At the height of St George sc supremacy during the ‘70s and ‘80s one only has to look at the board of directors photo below to see why. These m...en guided our club to the top shelf. It’s a fact and I know most wouldn’t want that said but history says it’s true. Unfortunately most are no longer with us. Recently another went that way. His name is Fred Arnold, without spouse, but married to the club. Fred passed away at the Salvation Macquarie Lodge, Arncliffe, age to be determined but possibly born in 1939. Apart from a brother under care in Brisbane Fred had no other relatives in Australia. Hence you may say his family was his club, always around smiling his bright disposition under those bushy eyebrows and long socks. I guess that when a sailor ends their career on water and after some time, they move away or aren’t seen so much anymore. It happens even to Life Members such as Fred was. And although that may occur there is always a connection back to our club via caring club elders. The head nurse attending to Fred stated she was astounded he had so many caring friends. The details for Fred Arnold’s service is here. Date 31st October Venue Taren Point Hotel Parraweena rd Taren point 2pm Fred has requested that his ashes be scattered at StGSC on the completion of its rebuild and I can’t see anyone denying that. Information thanks to Steve Foster. Gone but not forgotten

14.01.2022 The club is coming along nicely! Thanks again to our roving reporter Ross Bull for this week's photos

09.01.2022 Collis Having breakfast with some skiff people this morning and the usual chat about the old days came round. One guy was down from Queensland and asked about t...he colliss’. Unfortunately informed as to the passing of Brian, this led to brother Laurie and father Pat(Hamilton). And also to our first historian uncle Ted. Pats father George, and George’s brother Henry were amongst the very early members of st George sailing club. Pat , Ted, Laurie and Brian were life members of the club, Pat being a life patron. I’ve yet to confirm but the associations website states a LR Collis is a life member. This may be a typo but it could refer to Laurie. I’ll check. Additionally uncle Ted is a life member of the association. This all started with a question about Laurie. Today, December 11 is his birthday. Both Ted and Laurie were the clubs historians. See more

06.01.2022 The guy on the right is too young. He’s St George sc life member Ken Guthrie. He’s a sprightly mid 80’s ! His mate, and club stalwart is 90 yo today. Looking st...ylish in flip up sunnies and flannel, old mate Roley Sayers still lives independently in Sans Souci a steady stroll from both his beloved skiff clubs. Roley knew all the great skiff sailors of a by gone era inc Billo. So happy birthday mate. I’ll raise my glass tonight. See more

02.01.2022 Australian 16ft & 13ft Skiff Championships Postponed to Easter 2021 After careful consideration Gosford Sailing Club (GSC) and the Australian 16ft Skiff Associa...tion (ASSA) have, this evening, made the tough decision to postpone the ‘Red Pumps’ Australian 16ft and 13ft Skiff Championships until Easter 2021. This decision was made having regard to a variety of factors including the challenges currently facing the Northern Beaches and Greater Sydney, which includes Gosford, the current border restrictions between NSW and Qld and related uncertainties and NSW’s Health advice more generally in relation to the NSW’s current uptick in COVID-19 cases. We believe the approach to postpone the regatta aligns us to similar decisions being made by other class associations, clubs and businesses whom are doing their part to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The safety of our sailors, volunteers and broader community is our top priority. Postponing the regatta will hopefully provide us with the opportunity to run the regatta with greater certainty, at a reduced health risk for all involved, and in a format which sailors, volunteers and spectators find enjoyable. The deferred Australian Championships to be held 2nd 5th April 2020, will see a slightly reduced schedule of racing, the details of which will be announced in January 2021 via the release of a new regatta NOR. Thank you to GSC for their flexibility, our regatta sponsors for their understanding and the entire 16ft and 13ft Skiff community for your patience during these challenging times as they say, ‘we’re all in this together’. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact ASSA through our website. Best wishes to our sailors currently in lock down and Merry Christmas to all. Regards, Gosford Sailing Club & Australian 16ft Skiff Sailing Association

01.01.2022 A tribute to our past and present life members With thanks to Taryn Pascoe and Wayne Pascoe for producing this video.
