19.01.2022 Just 75 mins from Sails Apartments- great day trip...
18.01.2022 Special Video Feature: Incredible footage of a family (pod) of Orcas just off Bruny Island as they migrate north The remarkable migration patterns of orcas ar...e believed to not necessarily be for breeding. They swim for up to 10,000 km's from Antarctica's Southern Ocean into tropical waters. Which is where their skin comes into the picture. Studies suspect that orcas move into warmer waters in order to shed a layer, along with an encrustation of single-celled algae called diatoms, without freezing to death. They are driven, in other words, by the urge to make their skin all shiny and new. Orcas are cetaceans, a group of aquatic mammals including whales and dolphins, which live for extended periods in subzero Antarctic waters. Replacing and repairing outer skin in waters where the surface temperature is -1.9C may be dangerous, even lethal. Remarkably a study found that one orca returned to Antarctica after completing a 9,400 km trip in just 42 days! Orcas or killer whales are odontocetes and the largest species of dolphins. They are easily recognisable with their striking black and white or cream markings and extremely long, tapered dorsal fins. You can sometimes come across them off the east coast of Tasmania or even taking a break from their long migration in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel or Derwent River. Orcas are apex predators, at the top of the food chain. No other preators of the sea would dare hunt an orca. Adult male orcas can grow to over 9m long and weigh over 7.5 tonnes, while females can grow to eight metres or longer and weigh up to four tonnes. Orcas have 10 to 12 pairs of interlocking, powerful, conical teeth in both jaws. They are carnivorous and opportunistic hunters who feed on a wide range of species including: Orcas are some of the smartest creatures on our planet. They hunt in packs and sometimes even work with other species to their mutual benefit. Orcas hunt in groups (pods) of three to 40 individuals using highly effective, cooperative hunting techniques, which is why they have the nickname ‘wolves of the sea’. Orcas are highly social animals that live in small nuclear or extended family groups. They have a ‘cosmopolitan’ distribution which is why they can sometimes be found at any place all along the eastern coast of Austrlaia... including Tasmania. 14.01.2022 Finally... this weekend as restrictions eased we loved enjoying Tasmania at its best. Here are 20 of your magical photos taken over the last 24 hours from al...l across our beautiful Island State... and thank you, as always, to everyone for tagging our instagram accounts. A breathtaking view of Lilydale Falls from a little downstream totally immerse you in the wild, a gorgeous mum and older child pademelon cuddling in the Narawntapu National Park stole our hearts, endless white sand from Denison Beach at Bicheno on Tassie's east coast is so good to return to, beautiful reflections from Shene Distillery during their Saturday picnic was worth the wait, there are a number of beautiful waterfalls near Lake Osborne in the Hartz Mountains National Park waiting to be explored whilst some celebrated the lifting of restrictions by capturing nature at its most beautiful... in the wild lands of Tasmania. A quick trip down to Franklin for lunch yesterday was rewarded with picture perfect reflections from the Huon River, Little Blue Lake at Gladstone in Tassie's far north-east was a great spot for a stroll around its magnificent turquoise waters, spending a magical misty morning with the Scottish Highland Cows was just what the doctor ordered, seeing the cutest spikey little echidnas was so exciting, Remarkable Cave on the Tasman Peninsula was the perfect spot for a quick day trip and with Dove Lake closed the 7.5 km walk to the lake was so worth it for the view of Cradle Mountain and the dozens of gorgeous wombats we saw along the way Oh and did we mention the Speeler Track at Cradle Mountain takes you through cool temperate rainforests with lichen and fungi covered trees, then out onto the seemingly endless fields of buttongrass with stunning views looking toward Cradle Valley and Cradle Mountain.
