12.01.2022 Joel and Anita -cont’d (part 2 of 2) Ten days ago on the 11th March I had a friend staying with me helping with some building. Everything felt good. I had to g...o to work at 10am to do an Auslan course with a client and a deaf man to brush up on my skills. We were in a small cubicle space at Lismore Uni in the library. We’d only been there for 15 minutes. It was the first time we weren’t using our voices. Normally Anita would help as she is better at Auslan than I am but today we were trying no voice, just signing. All of a sudden my audio was distorted, not much sound but all white noise went super warped and very weird. I had a big deep breath and tried to sit with it for a bit then it happened again. I felt dizzy and I knew something was wrong. We called the Ambulance and I got on the floor. Apparently it’s called an Aura before you have a seizure. Some people get a taste in the mouth, others get audio problems so potentially it was an Aura. I got on the floor and my left side started convulsing. I was conscious but I could feel everything in me wanted to black out. I kept breathing, I knew I had to keep breathing. Anita was on my left side holding my shaking hand and all I remember is looking at her and I said ‘I don’t know what’s happening but I love you’ All this wild shit was happening. The first aid crew were there within seconds, everyone was rushing around, the Ambulance arrived quickly and it calmed down. My left side was still tingling for 2 hours after that. I was admitted to Lismore Base for an MRI and I was there all day. This young Dr Adam was there with me most of the time. He was a legend and unfortunately was the one who had to break the news that there was something there in the MRI. They transferred me to the Gold Coast Hospital where I met with another young Neurosurgeon and I was there for 5 days. They ran all the tests and came up with a plan which I was taking in and accepting. I was discharged and thought that was one opinion and everyone was telling me to go see Charlie Teo as he’s the man. I thought, maybe I should, what could be wrong with seeing the best? If Dr Teo said yes let’s go through with the GC plan then I would have accepted that. Anita got us in to see him quickly which was amazing. Anita - I just called his rooms explaining Joel's situation and they said - Can you be her on Tuesday? I was just crying, all confused and had no sleep. They said it’s $850 just to talk to him and we still needed to fly down there and back, I thought we just have to do it. I was crying on the phone to his receptionist and she said, You just need to get up and keep moving! I thought, Ok that’s good advice. I booked the flights and let them know we would be there. Joel - The original plan at the GC hospital was ..’Lets take it all out and I’m like yes, let’s get this out of my head. The big boss came and said ‘Let’s take 60% out.’ I was so confused. What do you do in this situation? Anita - It’s still no idea. Even Charlie Too explained that the risks are a 1 in 5 chance that Joel will be left with permanent motor disadvantage on his left side and there is a chance that he could die in surgery. Joel - We flew down to Sydney and Charlie was late. He walked in and the waiting room was full. He looked at us all and said..’I’m so sorry. One of my best friends just died and Ive been at the funeral.’ We thought, Dr’s just don’t do that, he’s real, he doesn’t wear a suit. We went in and he wanted to know us personally which was so comforting. He talked to us for a while about us. He was blown away by how long we’ve been together which is 15 years. I was hoping that he would agree with what was suggested in the public system. That would have been so easy and free. Anita - He said, ‘My approach to brain surgery is radically different to what they are proposing. Your best chance at success in removing a brain tumour and living a long life after is your first surgery you need to try and get it all out, nothing left behind.’ which is very different. We still don’t know which way to go though we have faith in the fact that he has done 11,000 surgeries and has a good success rate. The other guy is still an amazing surgeon but if you can you kind of want to go with the the best in their field. Joel - That threw a spanner in the works as to how we could make this happen. He said the tumour is a ticking time bomb, it needs to come out, the sooner the better. Anita - That’s where the problem with the money came in as we didn’t have Private Health cover and we needed $130,000. Joel - When I was 12 I was at the beach digging in the sand after a surf with my brother and my left arm stopped working. I had to use my right hand to move my left. I was trying to tell my mum but I was super disorientated so I was freaking out. They took me to hospital for scans but they found nothing. It has never come back till now. It may have been a warning sign. I have had headaches as far back as I can remember. My Mum always thought I was dehydrated needing more water. I’m on anti seizure medication right now which makes me drowsy and dizzy but hopefully it’s short term. Anita - We knew as soon as we left Dr Teo’s office that we had to find a way. Joel - My gut just told me that we had to go with him. I feel like I trust him and my gut says to go with him. He was straight shooting. He told me the risks which are 15% chance of motor skill loss on my left side and he doesn’t know to what degree. It may be as minimal as a limp but it could be paralysis which would need a wheelchair. It shouldn’t affect speech. The other Dr talked about losing eyesight and speech. It’s pretty scary and there is a risk of infection in the brain and dying. So weighing up those risks Charlie Teo says, ‘If you leave it as is you will have a short life.’ If you take out 60%, he’s seen it come back more aggressive and you don’t want to go back in there. He’ll go in and take the whole tumour. If that means that I have a limp or a gammy arm, I prefer that than not seeing my baby grow up. We did the GoFundme with Kate Stroud and it has been incredible. At this stage right now it is up to $89,000 in 2 days. It makes you forget how desperate it is when you see the love shown by all these people from this community and all over the world. So much love, it’s so humbling and we are so grateful. There are so many people we don’t know who are donating and sending beautiful messages. Once we reach the amount needed I will go in for the surgery within the week. So probably within the next 2 weeks I will be having brain surgery. I’m so thankful for being in this country, in this time in history where we are so connected with each other. Anita .and the medical technology where we can have a scan, the same day tells you have tumour, same day you're seeing specialists. We are so lucky. Joel - I just want to say to anyone who’s reading this, If you’ve had headaches for a long time please go get checked. We would never have gone down this road till I had the seizure. Go get checked out! We just want to send a massive thanks to all of you have donated or shared. We totally understand if you can’t donate, sharing is just as good. Receiving this love from everyone is just as good. I feel so loved and safe. https://www.gofundme.com/brain-tumour-surgery-please-help-j
